Best/worst trades Best free agents signed/lost
It is a little slow right now, so I thought maybe some of you bloggers could help me.
In the long cowboy's history, who are: the best trades, worst trades, best free agent aquistions and worst free agent losses.
My first impression is:
Best trade-Hershal Walker
Worst trade-Roy wliiams or Joey Galloway
Best free agent signing-Deion Sanders or Charles Haley
Worst free agents lost-Jimmy Smith. Ron Stone, Brock Marion, Jim Zorn, Ken Norten Jr
Letting Emitt Smith and Larry Allen go were painful and sad, but seem now to be good decisions (should Gm get any credit?)

I agree, loved La'Roi's play and attitude, but...
Charles Haley is a big reason the dynasty got kickstarted.

To me he seemed to signify a change in Dallas.
He brought about a defensive mindset to the Cowboys. I found it very unfortunate that he was a casualty of the switch to the 3-4.
same here
I was like yeah at first, now I wish we just payed him
Bruce Carter+Sean Lee=BRUCE LEE!!!!

Best
it cant be argued that any other trade dallas has made has been as good as Walker. Worst Galloway over Williams because it was 2 1st rders and Seattle ended up taking was Alexander and Hutchinson (not saying thats who Dallas would of taken but you get my point). Worst lost agreed Jimmy Smith, probably wouldnt of made the Galloway deal if they kept him. Cant give GM credit for 2 moves that were made for monetary reasons and not football reasons and btw Allen did make another Pro Bowl and Emmitt was still better than Hambrick.
ahh … Jimmy Smith … the HOF WR that Jerry drove out of town because he missed time with appendicitis … good times …

it can be argued
that getting cut was a wake up call for Smith. Yes I wish he stayed but from what i read at the time was he wasnt a hard worker and was a negative influence. Some players just dont fulfull there potential until something like that happens. Cris Carter is a great example of that.
what i read at the time was he wasnt a hard worker
I think that was the line Jerry was peddling and I don’t believe it, especially with how the rest of Smith’s career unfolded. Wikipedia has a summary that’s consistent with what I remember …
Smith was drafted in the second round of the 1992 NFL Draft out of Jackson State University. He spent two injury-plagued seasons with Dallas. After missing much of the 1992 season with a broken leg, early in 1993 he underwent an emergency appendectomy which led to a severe infection and was nearly fatal. In the aftermath, a dispute broke out between Smith and Cowboy owner Jerry Jones, who claimed that, since the condition wasn’t football related, the Cowboys should not have to pay Smith for the 1993 season
My recollection is that Smith had a bunch of weird complaints and Jerry basically accused him of not being tough, and then it turned out that he had appendicitis that almost killed him, and then Jerry refused to pay him.
so what seems more plausible.
-Jerry misjudged Jimmy Smith who was by all accounts a professional the rest of his career, or
-Getting appendicitis and getting screwed out of his salary by Jerry Jones was a ‘wake-up’ call for Smith?

JJ started the 93 season pissed to begin with
They had won the Super Bowl the year before then started 0-2 with Emmit holding out and he was seeing his dreams unravel around him. They went on to win the SB that year then the melt down with Jimmy Johnson came to head and we all know how that ended. Smith was someone JJ could take things out on at the time.
bs
that was jj being jj at the time..the know it all smart gm that is 5 steps ahead of any gm..
another example of how jj shud keep his dam mouth shut..

Ham Spanking
Thanks for the info Ham. This is my favorite blog and I read it regularly. I’m sorry I don’t read everything on this blog. I have been thinking about this post for a while. i just thought it might have some entertainment value.
FA- I was suggesting we review/discuss FA pro players cut by other teams.
Of course, Romo and Austin were the best non-drafted FA signed.
I am talking about FA like Keith Brooking (pro players who have been cut and don’t require a trade to sign them).
Who would have thought that with out John Phillips and Ken Hamlin, we could have played so badly in 2010.
I am sorry
but please visit the community guidelines for the proper use of a fanpost. This is 5 lines.. if you read this site every day you should know thats not acceptable fanpost material.
Also what does John Phillips have to do with anything? Marty B didn’t make this team go 1-7

big ham guidelines
I followed your advise on my unacceptable fanpost and again reviewed guidelines. It said, FP should be at least 100 words. I just counted my words and there are 101 (unless you don’t count GM or jr as words). Personally, I have seen many posts where a blogger takes way too many words to express an opinion. By my count, my post was 8 lines not 5. I also said I read this blog regularly not daily. I can understand why newbies might be hesitant to post anything here. I have seen previous posts on trades and FA signings before. What is it about the material that is unacceptable? I hope you can instruct me on proper material, so if I ever post again, I can be sure it exceeds the guidelines and has your approval.
Re: John Phillips
It seemed to me we had a very productive offense in ’09 and it was much less productive in ’10. The offensive personal was basicly the same except for the absense of John Phillips. I am not saying there was a cause and effect because of his absense, it was just a coincidence. On defense, many wanted to see K Hamlin replaced. He was and our defense was much worse. Again cause and effect or just coincidence or neither? I believe other bloggers have posted and/or commented on the drop off of offense and defense play from ’09 to ’10. My comment was intended to be more of an ironic musing than statement of fact.
What did make us go 1-7? If you have the answer, I would like to know.
Also, please feel free to correct my spelling and grammer errors when you find them.
Look at any of the other post especially the rec ones.
Its just not about the minimum word count or how the topic generates discussion. One line saying Romo sucks can generate discussion. Its about putting together a well thought out original opinion on a cowboy topic.

the big ham lesson
Thanks for your response.
As with most newbie bloggers/posters, I welcome your instructions.
I am not computer literate, can’t type well, can’t do links, post charts, post pics or graphs.
I guess you agree my post included the required amount of words.
You didn’t respond to my questions: 5 or 8 lines?, if Marty B wasn’t the reason we went 1-7, what was he reason?
Re: How a topic generates discussion. I would think on this blog that the amount of discussion generated on a topic would be a good thing.
I agree a one line post saying Romo sucks can generate discussion. I think there have been many posts on this.
My post was not one line and it invited multiple answers.
Re: Well thought out post. Was the trade for C Haley more beneficial than the signing of D Sanders? Was Larry Brown or Alvin Harper the worst free agent signing by another team? I don’t know how you can presume to know my thought process. In spite of what you may think, I do think quite a long time before I consider posting (because of blog police).
Re: Original opinions? If it’s not origional , I can’t blog on it? What about blogging on the poor play of the OL. poor play of Safety, poor play by DBs, M Jenkins, coaches, Rat, D Ware, draft picks and free agent available/needed. I don’t think these are original thoughts. You say I/nobody can post or blog an opinion on them because it is not “original”. I guess a lot of other bloggers are in your ‘dog house.’
Please, just make it clear what your rules are and what I can and can not blog on your site. i hope your rules will apply equally to all.
