First off a hat tip to Kegbearer and CotySaxman....their detailed posts(here, here and here) on the Rob Ryan Defense are simply amazing. In fact one could argue that this post is unnecessary. However I promised that I would look at how our current players would fit into this defense, and while I did a post shortly after the draft, (If you haven't read it here it is) as you see it wasn't my best effort..however I had done a bunch of posts and was frankly just burned out. So after the jump is the Full Rob Ryan defensive roster for 2011, Ironman style...
Lets start with the DL shall we?
DL(NT's will be notated by a *):
Marcus Spears*, Jay Ratliff*, Josh Brent-Price*, Sean Lissmore, Stephen Bowen
Now I know what you are saying..."3 Nose tackles! WTF!". Well let me explain...All three of them may see time at the NT spot...the idea will be an effective rotation, with all 5 Linemen. So you could see this line up:
RDE-Bowen, NT-Spears, LDE Ratliff
Then the next down could be this:
RDE- Lissmore, NT- Brent-Price, LDE- Bowen
The key(s) will be two fold...Whether or not Dallas can resign Spears and Bowen, and their ability to 1 gap(Spears and Brent-Price) and Two gap(Bowen)....if those happen....Dallas' DL could actually become a strength as opposed to a weakness.....please note that Igor and Hatcher are not included..neither one is versatile enough(IMO) to warrant inclusion...Hatcher will not be resigned, and Igor more than likely will be shipped off to Houston.....
Next comes the Linebacking core
WOLB- Demarcus Ware, Brandon Williams
WILB- Bradie James, Sean Lee
SILB- Keith Brooking, Bruce Carter
SOLB- Anthony Spencer, Victor Butler
Frankly the LB core has been beaten to death....D-ware is a monster, James is decent, and will split time with Brooking and Lee, Carter will see spot snaps... Spencer will "Breakout" ...no Butler will supplant him...ETC ETC....Frankly I think that by the end of the year, Carter and Lee should have taken over the ILB spots, and Butler will have over taken Spencer as SOLB....
RCB- Micheal Jenkins, Bryan McCann(o' whoop a$$), Terrance Newman
SS- Akwasi Owusu- Ansah, Barry Church
FS- Terrance Newman, Danny McCray
LCB-Orlando Scandrick, JT Thomas*, Terrance Newman
(* denotes "Nickel" CB)
Now before you guys go all righteous on me and say "We need a FA safety!" I ask you this,"How?" Dallas will Barely be able to sign all of its picks, plus Free, Spears and Bowen.....I honestly don't see Dallas making any FA moves this year....plus if AOA is half as smart as Dallas has said he is, then he already has Rob's entire playbook memorized.....and Why Newman to FS?....because A) he will be the best available player for it, B) he would provide a veteran leadership next to AOA, and C) This also allows Dallas to carry 6 CB's(if you count AOA as a CB) for the price of 4 roster spots...bargain city let me tell you.....
All that being said it would not Surprise me to see Newman shipped off to Houston for a late round pick...They need a CB, and Newman knows Wades Defense.....my dream scenario?
We get Mario Williams(who BTW is a free agent next year....hint, hint Jerry)
Houston gets Newman, Spencer, and Igor plus Dallas' #1 2012 Draft pick.....
Houston Gets three players that a) fill needs, B) know Wades "D" and C) would provide upgrades to a Defense that needs all the help it can get...
Dallas gets...Mario Freaking Williams! This guy is like D-Ware and Jay Rat mixed together....IF we could pry him away from the Texans....just think...Mario+Ware+Ratliff+Rob Ryan=extreme pwnage.....
"But Ironman" you say "isn't he a 4-3 DE?" yes, but he is a 6-7 290lb BEAST!...at the combine he put up the following numbers:
40 Yrd Dash: 4.70
20 Yrd Dash: 2.77
10 Yrd Dash: 1.60
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 35
Vertical Jump: 40 1/2
Broad Jump: 10'00"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.37
3-Cone Drill: 7.21
"Yeah those are great numbers, but where would he play?" you might ask...Any where he wanted...He is strong enough and quick enough to play virtually any position, he could line up at RDE one play, then line up at SOLB the next....imagine the headaches that would cause. Here is a highlight film of Mario for your viewing pleasure

But I digress.... Now where was I?..Oh yeah...Terrance Newman.
Now assuming that Dallas can't trade off Newman, I think that they should seriously consider allowing him to be the FS. This takes advantage of his experience by putting him in a position of leadership, while allowing him to play "facing the QB", thus allowing him to anticipate better. This also allows Scandrick to move outside where, as we saw last year, he can be very effective
Of course I am sure you noted that I have Dallas resigning Marcus Spears...in case you are wondering why, Here is the Proday workout for Marcus Spears:
40 Yrd Dash: 5.05
20 Yrd Dash:
10 Yrd Dash:
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 23
Vertical Jump: 31
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.44
3-Cone Drill: 7.21
40 Yrd Dash: 5.03
20 Yrd Dash: 2.81
10 Yrd Dash: 1.69
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 32
Vertical Jump: 35 1/2
Broad Jump: 08'09"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.44
3-Cone Drill: 7.21
The second one is the Combine of one Ndamukong Suh... that's right Spears compares fairly well with arguably the best DT in the League...Now I admit that Spears isn't as strong(though I am sure the gap has closed alot) nor as explosive(though again it probably isn't as big a difference now) but Spears definitely has the quickness and agility to perform well as a 1 gap DE....and has shown that he can be an effective 2 gap DE also.....I personally would like to see Spears in a Rob Ryan Defense.
Well that is all I have on this subject...as always I welcome any comments and Critiques that you may have, so feel free to share them.....I leave you with this little nugget:
