I have been asking this question ever since the draft ended. I have seen many lists of the top UDFAs once the league is able to sign them and his name is never mentioned. I have even just seen lists of UDFAs, not necessarily top ones, and couldn't find his name in there (although the lists were very similar). I was so surprised that this FS out of UNC was not drafted by a single team. Now I know that his leg was broken in UNC's Bowl game this past year, but according to his draft scouting profile on NFL.com, he had a chance to sneak into the 2ND ROUND. How he went from being a potential second rounder to a UDFA is beyond me.
There has to be something I really missed about this kid for that to happen. I just don't see how it could just be the leg though. There wasn't much of a better ball hawk in the NCAA than this guy at the FS spot (Although NFL.com has him registered as a CB for some reason). He has the speed to be a center fielder, spends great time in the film room (so you know he could probably be a QB for the defense eventually and get people in place), and he has Mitts about the size of Dez Bryant (His 10" vs. Dez's 10 3/4").
So I ask again, what happened to this guy? I really hope that the Cowboys take a look at this guy. For one thing they need safeties because it looks like Sensabaugh is going to be leaving and Alan Ball is pretty much unserviceable at the safety spot. Now we got guys like AOA, McCray and Church. However I think most of those guys have been slotted better for the SS position. AOA is probably the only one that could play either or. I say let Sensabaugh walk because he clearly lacks a strong desire to be a Cowboy. Then let people battle it out in camp for the safety spots, maybe signing a free agent like Abram Elam from Cleveland. Either way I hope we sign this guy because there isn't anything to lose on him. Bring him into camp, then let him work for it and if he doesn't make it you either stick him on the practice squad if he really ISN'T that good or you might have just found the next Ed Reed in the UDFA pool (I know that is very premature and a little extreme, but hey it could happen).
So I say again, sign Deunta Williams. Stats don't lie and his are definitely stacked in his favor. I'm sure Bruce Carter can vouch for him some as well as the UNC head coach Butch Davis (who has some Cowboys Super Bowl hardware from the 90's). Here also you will find Deunta Williams NFL Combine press conference interview.
