Getting back to the hotel late tonight.
Was a day for some excitement inside the Dome today. Coach Robinson had a collision with Teddy Williams during ST drills and had to be taken to the hospital. The word is he is ok but sore and has been released from the hospital. Look forward to seeing him back out on the field Sunday. The pads were on today and there was plenty of popping and hitting going on.
With the pads on today it was no surprise we had our first camp fight. David Arkin came in to spell Montrae Holland and he and Rat got into a shoving match. Did not look like Phil Costa took very kindly to Rat picking on the rookie and was right in Rat’s face to take up the fight. They had to be broken up by teammates. Looks like Arkin will not be intimidated by anyone including a vet like Rat, and Costa is showing a mean streak out there.
Speaking of the Oline, today saw Sam Young man the LT position and Tyron Smith move to the right side of the line. Young was taken to school by DeMarcus Ware today but the kid is not backing down. Smith continues to show improvement and does not give up easily even when getting beat. Holland continues to improve also and had some good blocks to spring runs for Felix Jones and RB Lonyae Miller. He still is wearing down towards the end of practice but is showing improvement. This line is not ready for primetime with these rookies but it is great to see them developing. Should be Thursday when the new league year starts that we will see the return of the starters to the line and we will get a better feel for how things will shake out.
The defense continues to bring the blitzes and bring them from everywhere. Sean Lee filled in for Keith Brooking today and showed amazing speed getting into the backfield. We saw some great plays today by Sean Lissemore who continues to impress me. Also some great plays by our backup LB’s Brandon Williams and UDFA Alex Albright. The more I see of this defense the more I am loving its attacking style and deception. Ryan is showing a great ability to bring the pressure to the QB’s while quickly dropping defenders into throwing lanes. This is really making the throws to hot reads a gamble. This is not a Phillips or Parcels 3-4 defense, so have every expectation of sacks and turnovers increasing this year.
On the offense our receivers continue to do a very good job. Miles Austin continues to show why he is the #1 receiver but Dez Bryant is right there with him making plays. Kevin Ogletree continues to look good and get open out there. He is looking like a solid #3 receiver which the Cowboys really need after losing Crayton last year. IMO the Tree looks just as good as Crayton did making tough grabs in traffic. The race is still on to see who will fill out the other receiver spots but all are making a great case. Our tight ends are solid with Witten being Witten and Martellus Bennett and John Phillips making plays in the center of the field. Tashard Choice and DeMarco Murray are still out but Felix and Miller are showing a good combination out there. To me it looks like our rookie fullback Shaun Chapas will take the FB spot easily from Chris Gronkowski. He is a much better blocker and runner. He is still going through some rookie learning curves but is a big improvement at the FB position.
Will be posting my Day 4 report from the airport Sunday evening.
