Cowboys Fans Take Over Negotiations With Abram Elam

Twitter allows fans an unprecedented level of access to their favorite sport stars. And while that can be both a blessing and a curse, today it definitely took a humorous turn when Cowboys fans started tweeting safety Abram Elam directly, in an effort to get him to sign in Dallas.

A guy called Patrick Atkins, going by the name cowboyfan72 started the thing rolling (as far as I can tell) by tweeting Elam directly, telling him to pack his bags for Dallas, to which Elam replied that his bags were already packed.

A short while later, another user tried to sell Elam on the potential INTs he would be able to collect in the Cowboys defense, to which Elam again replied, "LMBO, Iike it".

That was followed by another tweet by a troy4smith telling the world that "every Cowboys fan needs to bug @abeelam until he signs with the Boys lol". Since then, it's likely been mayhem on Elam's twitter account. All of this of course is done in good humor, but it does drive home the fact that the Cowboys faithful are getting impatient. You'll find all the tweets mentioned here after the break below.

Now, if only some Eagles fans would tell DeSean Jackson that he should be paid at least as much as Nnamdi Asomugha...

not to flame

but is Elam any good? On that safety post from a few days ago, he was ranked down at 57. I know football stats aren’t perfect, but he doesn’t seem to stand out in any area. Is the entire attraction that he’s cheap and knows Ryan’s system? Because that’s not super comforting.

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

in fact, it sounds like Ryan's defense needs very well rounded safeties

and that list makes Sensabaugh look pretty damn good.

I think a lot of members on BTB are just bitter that there were plays he gave up on (like almost every player on the defense) last year

However, I feel you guys are too hard on him

Didn’t he lead the team in picks?

Yeah I know “right place, right time” but I feel there’s something to be said for being in the right place at the right time. He was in the right place at the right time more than anyone else on the team

by markdamack on Jul 31, 2011 8:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Exactly.

Also listening to him explain what happened on that play made sense. He was watching the receiver’s eyes, and when he turned around the ball had already gone past him and the receiver caught it without him ever seeing it. Just a case of bad timing, it happens.

Right.

It’s not like you see Sensi do it a lot though. Usually he’s pretty on point. On that particular play he just got beat, simple as that.

well he cant be but so good bc he still on the FA market

Sensi doesnt have a physical bone in his body IMHO & he plays very soft in the box. he doesnt blitz very good & he hits like a pillow.
i think any QB, TE or RB feel like they can take advantage of him & another reason his stats looked okay last season was bc teams focused on Ball & Jenkins more.

He’s made quite a few plays in Ryan’s system the last couple years, and he’s fairly inexpensive. IMHO the hope is that a combo of Abram/Sensi can hold the fort for a year or maybe two while some combo of AOA/Church/Sendejo become real contributors for us

by JamesR on Jul 31, 2011 4:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Is he probowler ready to happen...probably not.

His attractiveness to the organization resides in the fact that he knows Ryan’s system, has played here before and will not break the bank. The last part is the most important. I suspect the Cowboys have already made an offer to him, and Elam is just taking some time to see what his other options are…

by CaliFanInTx on Jul 31, 2011 5:00 PM CDT up reply actions

it doesnt look like anyone else is intrested in Elam IMO

i would like Elam over most of the safeties left on the market but i havent seen any proof he will make a huge difference.
our secondary isn’t very strong & if RR cant get any pressure on the QB it could be a long season again.
Teams are going to throw on Dallas until they stop them & Jenkins will have to face some of the best WRs in the game this season. Holmes & Plaxico the first night is going to be a huge test on our secondary but i feel RR will focus on getting Sanchize.

Every team has a great gameplan until they get Punched in the Mouth!

by DCNation73 on Aug 1, 2011 3:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Start combing the rosters of all the teams...

look at the teams who have a an overload at safety. (check the teams who drafted safties first) and maybe when the final cuts come one of those guys can be had for a 1 year deal. I think it’s better to wait right now and have Elam as our last option.

Jerry is the end all in Dallas.

by football mensa on Jul 31, 2011 5:37 PM CDT up reply actions

That's a very good point

but I’d rather we sign Elam now, and then look for a second guy on the waiver wire if it comes to that – instead of banking everything on the waiver wire.

i don't think elam is ronnie lott...

but i think the main attraction is that he’s been in ryan’s system, ryan seems to like him and he can’t possibly be any worse than alan ball or sensabaugh for that matter. that’s why i want him. and that’s why my wife has saved him a plate of spaghetti if he comes to dallas. and believe me abram, my wife can cook. that’s one of the reasons i married her….

I don't have any problem w/ the Cowboys signing Elam, but....

to call him a “high character guy” or “RKG” seems to gloss over the fact that he was convicted of some kind of sexual assault while playing at Notre Dame. While the details may be kind of murky, a link to the story is here:

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/jets/2007/11/25/2007-11-25_abram_elam_aiming_for_fresh_start.html

Now when it comes to signing players, as long as he is now on his best behavior, I am all good with signing him. But let’s understand the whole story first.

by BVandy on Jul 31, 2011 7:03 PM CDT up reply actions

well

like you a said the story is Murky….so I am willing to give the benefit of the doubt in this case.

Here’s a theoretical play from last year: Snap. Tony takes 7 step drop. Tony looks left at Miles, who is doubled, and looks right to where Roy Williams should be…but instead sees Colombo on his back and a Defensive End foaming at the mouth jumping over Marc’s carcass. Tony proceeds to run like hell and look for Witten

Like I said, I am not trying to say the Cowboys shouldn't sign him...

But he has baggage, including one which likely required him to register as a sex offender the first time he was in town. I have no doubt he works his tail off and has had a rough life. I am sure he will be one of the first guys in the gym and one of the last to leave. Having said all of that, let us reserve the title RKG for guys like DeMarcus Ware and Tony Romo. Otherwise, it tends to devalue the term.

the list people are talking about

Sensabaugh ranked wherever, but he was a big part of the Cowboys giving up the most points in franchise history

JimmyK said “the book is out on him, he is soft and horrible in mid zone coverage”

Sensabaugh is not that good, he is a JAG, just another guy, not a starter in the NFL, a good backup maybe

if Sensabaugh was so good the Jags would have signed him long term, Wade Phillips would have signed him over Daniel Manning

I loved when we got Sensabaugh, but since the Vikings game and the 2010 season, I saw what he was all about and he isnt a leader

he’s obviously not as down and out as Columbo was when we brought him in, but he’s one of those guys who obviously has god given abilities that haven’t been fully realized.

I’d be tempted to bring him in as our SS to see if we can unlock something in him. Rebuilding/transitioning teams don’t just rely on rookies, they also go after high upside/low risk signings like that.

As they say on the Lunch Break

Victor Butler just MAKES PLAYS

It’s true. It WAS preseason (I know), and we were playing the Miami starters….he took that game over, by himself.

You aint been around in awhile, maybe you haven't heard........I don't shine shoes no more

by markdamack on Jul 31, 2011 8:19 PM CDT up reply actions

That's the kind of thing

A “TC for starting RB” fan would say. “Just making plays” isn’t enough on this team. One dimensional players like Butler don’t have business starting for this team. Spencer’s run stuffing is much more of an asset than Butler’s pass rushing. While some think Butler to be a slightly better rusher, everyone knows Spencer to be among the best in the league against the run.

by CotySaxman on Aug 1, 2011 12:03 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Is that the kind of thing one of "those" fans would say?

by markdamack on Aug 1, 2011 6:04 AM CDT up reply actions

Sorry, I'm a bit lazy when I post from my cell phone.

What I mean is that, when people like a player, yet have little solid evidence to support their evidence aside from a few positive memories, they usually say “the guy just makes plays.” It most reminds me of Chia describing Tashard Choice. People like flashy players. The perception is that every time Victor Butler comes in he makes a play. The reality is that fans don’t notice how often he is in the game, and therefore attribute all of the “nothing” plays to the starters.

Anthony Spencer is nearly as capable of a pass rusher, if not more capable. Production is a product of scheme and execution. Butler cannot hold up against the run. He is a liability in this aspect. Therefore, the scheme is designed that, every time he comes in, he’s going to rush the quarterback. Every time he is in, he has an opportunity to rush the quarterback. The majority of Spencer’s opportunities (as with any starter) are on running downs. Therefore, he (and anyone who you think should replace him), will be required to stop the run more often than rush the passer.

Why, then, would we replace one of best run-stopping linebackers in the NFL with one of the least capable, in exchange for at most a modest increase in pass rush? Teams will just run to his side all game. Pass rush neutralized.

by CotySaxman on Aug 1, 2011 2:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Spencer is just as 1 dimension as Butler

the last time i checked OLBs that rushed the passer were a heck of a lot more valuable then a run stuffer. with teams passing about 65% of the time it would actually make Butler more effective. i’m sure Spencer will get all the chances in the world this season but if he doesn’t get some sacks then they have no choice but to replace him.
it takes more then Ware & Ratliff to get the job done.

Every team has a great gameplan until they get Punched in the Mouth!

on at least one measure it's butler that's miles ahead of spencer

http://www.dallasnews.com/incoming/20110127-sturm_s-cowboys-analysis-victor-butler-a-fine-fourth-round-pick.ece

Butler, since the day he was drafted has been the #3 OLB on the roster, a spot that does not get much chance, but Butler has certainly made the most of his rare opportunites. In 2009, he had 3 sacks in just 67 chances to rush the passer (a sack rate of 4.4% – Ware’s sack rate is 2.1%, Spencer’s 1.4%). Obviously, that rate would be impossible to maintain, but he has the gift for making the most of his rare opportunities….Again, his pass rush skills were on display in limited opportunities and had a sack against Jacksonville and another against the Redskins. 2 sacks and 9 QB pressures in 76 pass rush situations is easily the best rate again on the team

Anthony Spencer:

But I said that Lissemore and Price would challenge for a spot….here

Here’s a theoretical play from last year: Snap. Tony takes 7 step drop. Tony looks left at Miles, who is doubled, and looks right to where Roy Williams should be…but instead sees Colombo on his back and a Defensive End foaming at the mouth jumping over Marc’s carcass. Tony proceeds to run like hell and look for Witten

This will be an interesting matchup for Nnamdi

By the way, Eagles had to do something for the passing game, considering that the NFC East is the best passing division in football. You realize that every team was Top 10 in passing last year (including redskins)? Oh yeah, and Dallas was at the top of that division in passing. This is an attempt to slow us down. All personel moves are geared toward stopping teams in your division.

He’s gonna run circle routes around Nnamdi, take of his (Dez) pads and make him (Nnamdi) carry it, pants him, and score to the endzone.

Abe Elam

I don’t think it is as much about talent as it is about scheme and being the right kind of guy. I think that we have seen that time and time again with each team that has won the superbowl. Each team has at least 3 or 4 guys on the team that could truly be considered SPECIAL players and maybe one of the best at what they do. It is more about team chemistry and character from what we have seen in recent years. It hasn’t been the superstars carrying their team, but teams uniting together and gelling really well. I think the Packers are the perfect example of that. How else could a team with 15+ players on IR win a superbowl? I tell you the coaches don’t get enough credit in a superbowl.

"I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle, victorious." –Vince Lombardi

Exactly, Elam may not be the most talented

But he has those qualities that fits. Every great team has guys like that. I remember guys from back in the day like Brock Marion, James Washington, Thomas Everett, Ray Horton. You may not remember their names or faces, but they were key contributors to Super Bowl winning teams just as much as the stars.

Notice the COACHES that have won recent superbowls

Mike Tomlin, Sean Payton, and Mike McCarthy. What do they all have in common. They are all coaches who demand excellence from their players and players love to play for them. Rex Ryan hasn’t won a super bowl yet, but he also has some of these traits, even though he can get under people’s skin from time to time. Notice any of these traits in Jason Garrett? Because personally I see a guy that won’t take any crap from his players, demands excellence from them and is a great motivator too. You could definitely say that Jimmy Johnson was one of those guys. Bill Belichek is also a name I would stick there. Don’t worry about the players here and their talent or how many pro bowls. Look to Garrett and his staff, and you will see the attitude of a champion there, which is where it counts most.

Goldson

I read during the that chat on ESPN that DaShon Goldson was supposed to be in the building today visiting the Cowboys. I didn’t know a lot about him, but then I read his scouting report on ESPN, I was quite imperressed. and I think that he and Elam would be awesome together. If the Cowhoys can sign the two of them, would they be a good fit together?

The San Fran defensive backfield...

has been crap for a few years now. He was one of the starters in the backfield for the last two years. He had a decent 2009 but was practically invisible last season in 16 starts. He’s pretty much a FS only IIRC. He’s pretty much the same size as Ball (6’2", 200lbs). I’m not impressed.

Abe Elam might not be the most talented..

But he has those qualities that fits. Every great team has guys like that. I remember guys from back in the day like Brock Marion, James Washington, Thomas Everett, Ray Horton. You may not remember their names or faces, but they were key contributors to Super Bowl winning teams just as much as the stars.

My opinion on the safety thing

I think they are taking their time with it, to see if they think someone on the roster can play well at that position. Instead of acting quick for players that will still be there for a reasonable price, seeing what they already have. Worst case is that they don’t see anyone they trust on the roster to start, so they sign someone like Elam that already knows the Rob Ryan defense. I don’t think it’s just pure laziness or that they don’t think they need a safety. It’s just being patient. I think all the anger and frustration is because they haven’t really made any moves (besides Coleman) other than keep their own, which is very understandable. Just hang in there

by danielcp0303 on Jul 31, 2011 7:26 PM CDT reply actions

I agree

Jerry has been burned by his recent safety signings… Roy, Hamlin, Ball, Sensabaugh. Look at the Weddle signing, he is making more money than Reed and Polamalu combined.. Aint that a joke? So I cant really blame Jerry for not overspending this time. Its all about finding the right fit at the right price

by dcsince77 on Jul 31, 2011 7:39 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Sensabaugh? Seriously?

He’s played on two 1-year deals for peanuts. Probably the best value ever for a safety. Of course, he won’t play for that cheap, again.

HAHAHA Great stuff

But is anyone else worried we are driving Elam’s asking price up and could be hampering negotiations? At least he’ll know he has the fans backing him…and the chance to play for a coach like Ryan (who he knows) and be introduced to Garrett’s Landry-like calm waters run deep passion.

next years draft has not only some very good db’s it also has some quality at qb. I have said it more than once. If Landry Jones falls Jerry should look into it. Barkley and luck won’t fall. It willbe interesting to see how Foles progresses as well as Cousins. There is always a qb that gets hot and gets taken higher than expected. Maybe he should target one .

I never understood the “move Ratliff to DE” movement going on the site but at 285 it might be a good move. Or at least him and Brent-Price could share snaps at NT.

Remember it's a different system.

Sounds like I'm in the minority but I would love Ratliff at DE.

First, he isnt getting any younger, would extend his career by not taking on double teams in the long haul. Now at 285 thats way too light for a 3 down NT I dont care what anyone says. He may not start at DE this season, must he is going to get alot of snaps across the line. Maybe they use him more on 3rd downs at NT and DE on 1st and 2nd downs this season,

by Boyzfan94 on Jul 31, 2011 7:53 PM CDT reply actions

I agree

He’s too small to play NT this year. Besides, Josh Brent is probably our 2nd best D-Lineman. I would love to get them on the field at the same time. We don’t have a DE who can hold the point and penetrate so Rat would be a huge upgrade at DE – particularly on DWare’s side. We could start playing some of the games the Giants play with their D-Line rotation.

by JimmyJohnson on Jul 31, 2011 7:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Boyz I suggested that and everyone thought I was dogging Rat.

LOL. Rat is built like a de. He would be better served to play any position except nt.

by football mensa on Jul 31, 2011 8:25 PM CDT up reply actions

I guess me and you are on the same page..

Ive been preaching this for a year or so. Everyone sees that he is wearing down as the season goes on. I saw him last year getting blown off the ball too much for my taste and especially against teams with the better offensive lines. The player is not getting any younger so something has to give. Moving him or getting more snaps at DE would most certainly extend his career IMO..

by Boyzfan94 on Jul 31, 2011 8:35 PM CDT up reply actions

I've been saying this for 3 years!

Why go 3-4 then not get the right personell? Get a NT if you need one! The problem was, when he was going good (really just one big year) no one wanted to see the obvious, that he’d wear down.

Very similar to the MBarber case, everyone was so enamored with his style, but it should have been obvious he’d be worn down real quick. Oh well.

The thing is, if they get a decent body for NT, they solve the DE problem too, the guy is just what is needed there.

But to tell you the truth, I’d take just a body there (because of $$ right now) for this year, just an average guy. Because Rat out on the edge would more than make up for a lack of push up the middle.
After year sof fighting in the middle, I’d think it would seem easy to Rat if he got out of the traffic jam!

At least, see it clear

Many are calling Jerry cheap. Really?
We’re all wanting two great safeties but let’s be real.

Jerry spends and will continue. The $20M of dead money next year is proof of that.

The market is overpriced for average and slightly above safeties. Jerry NEEDS to get a good value for the quality because he needs money in the next year or two for a stud corner or two to repalce Newman and Scandrick should he leave. Still need a complete DE and the future center for Gurode…not to mention Witten is not getting younger and Bennett is UFA next year.

It’s just about not over reaching.

Hopefully Jerry opens his wallet and says

I will pay you as a HC to be a DC….I mean there is no salary cap on coaches…..

Well, let's see how the games play out.

I have good feelings, but it is just TC.

By the way, just noticed the change to your signature. Man, don’t go talking about that. Remember the old law enforcement saying: “If you want to get away with it, wear gloves and don’t talk about what you did.”

I don't know if Lee Ford is right, but if he is, Jerry Jones will go down in history as the Great Evil Genius of the NFL.

If RR turns this D into anything CLOSE to "qb sackin head rippin mashin"

First, he derserves to leave, and second, We (team and fans) Win,
Cuz if he achieves that it’s a miracle and we must have had a great season!

I’ll worry about him doing so well they might lose when he starts actually accomplishing anything besides dressing like a pirate and getting fans lathered up over practices. Let’s check and see where this D is week 8.

I am having one horrible day

Badly failed an important test for one of my papers. Blowing up atm. If Jerry doesn’t sign a Safety soon I might evaporate into a mist of misery.

I know this is an unpopular

thought right about now (and I’m not usually a hater) but I say DON’T sign Elam. 2 reasons – one, the “model” of good teams is to play as many of their own draftees are early and as much as possible to save money. AOA and Church aren’t Elam and Sensabaugh but could be in a couple of years. Fans need to be patient. Signing Elam will probably be > 3-4 mil a year and will decrease FA signing capability NEXT year. 2nd reason is because of Elam himself. He’s not RKG. He has a sexual assault charge history as well as 3 drug charges in his family. And, a guy who’s answer to a request to come play here is “well cut the MF check” isn’t thinking about team; he’s thinking about himself.

I say play our young guys and let them succeed/fail.

See, here's my problem with the whole "be patient" thing.

We don’t have time for that. The core of this team (Romo, Ware, Witten, Ratliff, etc…) are all either in or about to be in their 30s. At some point (sooner rather later) the window of opportunity to compete with this roster is going to close and we’ll be looking at a complete rebuild. The time to go for it is now.

True

That is the risk you take. But right now, signing Elam means the boys will be OK next season (somewhere between 7-9 and 9-7) or 2nd in the NFC East. That puts them on the outside of the wildcard race. And, given the amount of $ JJ is spending, they stay there for the next 3 years never improving.

the key to winning a Superbowl is to take your lumps for a couple of years, improve through the draft, then compete. We are where the Packers were 3-4 years ago.

by Tyrone Jenkins on Aug 1, 2011 9:09 AM CDT up reply actions

Not really.

Aaron Rodgers was 23-24 then. Romo is 31 now.

agree somewhat.

If your in the thinking like I am that this team wont be very good this year then I agree have Church and AOA take their lumps this season. Next year look to upgrade the position when we have more money to work with or hope for the best and these two young players turn into something really good.

by Boyzfan94 on Aug 1, 2011 9:06 AM CDT up reply actions

Sign Pool and Elam

We need a cover safety like Pool and Elam is an upgrade as well. We can continue to groom AOA and Church, maybe even let Sensabaugh go back to playing DB on nickle downs.
