Eagles Buying the Best Team

The Eagles just added (former) Giants WR Steve Smith to their team, adding yet another weapon to their roster. No reason to whine or complain, just another to hate the Eagles even more. Dallas has already knocked down one all-star team, it can do it again. GO COWBOYS

I'm not sold on the iggles

they’ve made a big splash but haven’t upgraded in their areas of greatest need, O-line and LB. I think the Saints have done the best job in FA and trades.

Red means run, son, numbers add up to nothin

by Biph on Aug 11, 2011 12:02 AM CDT reply actions

I never thought about that till now

All they did was upgrade their strengths….they didn’t address a single weakness really….O-ring theory Eagles, O-ring theory….

Here’s a theoretical play from 2010: Snap. Tony takes 7 step drop. Tony looks left at Miles, who is doubled, and looks right to where Roy Williams should be…but instead sees Colombo on his back and a Defensive End foaming at the mouth jumping over Marc’s carcass. Tony proceeds to run like hell and look for Witten

Am I the most optimistic Cowboys fan in the World? Yes, due to an "unfortunate accident" to the previous holder of the title.

by I am Ironman!!! on Aug 11, 2011 12:30 AM CDT up reply actions

You're not serious, right?

CB was easily the Eagles biggest weakness last year. You’re telling me adding two Pro Bowl CB’s isn’t addressing that weakness?

Then the next weaknesses were OL,DT,LB,DE in no particular order. The only position they didn’t address there is LB.

OL – Added a 1st rd pick at guard, and starter to compete at RT (Ryan Harris).
DT – Cullen Jenkins
DE – Jason Babin

they didn’t address a single weakness really

Really?

by Smitty2K3 on Aug 11, 2011 12:07 PM CDT up reply actions

What about DC?

Wasn’t that a weakness last year? Or is Eagles Nation really sold on the converted O-line coach?

Really/ Coaching advice?

You guys were about 2 years late when you fired Wade Phillips.

by Kevin M. on Aug 11, 2011 12:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes, DC could’ve been considered a weakness last year… and they addressed it. Whether they addressed it the way I would’ve liked, I don’t know. But they addressed it.

Whether it works out the way they hope it will, remains to be seen.

and draft as well

the saints have a great team, and a lot of them were bargains, ingram and jordan in the late first, martez in the third, that’s a team to be afraid of

If you follow the Eagles at all they are worried about Maclin...

he hasn’t practiced at all since camp started and has lost 15 pounds from a mysterious “illness”. Steve Smith had microfracture surgery on his knee this past offseason so who’s to say he comes back at all.

Buying? This isn’t baseball. There’s a salary cap. I think you guys are upset our front office is smart and was well prepared. Go look at the payrolls.

LOL

I think your front office is stupid. You guys are loading up for a championship and you will come up short yet again! Good luck next year suckers!

BTW, thanks for overpaying that CB because I really didn’t want Dallas to have that contract on their minds. Your front office was like a homeless man who won the lottery that went out to go buy a bunch of new shiny things but forgot to buy a house.

You guys have done great in the draft for the past several years, but this was a desperation FA for you and I think it’s going to bite you after you fail to reach the Super Bowl again.

Sometimes you go all in and you bust out, and I think that’s what Philly will suffer this year… hey, at least your MLB team looks awesome! :)

by Damnsammit on Aug 11, 2011 9:41 AM CDT up reply actions

Yup, stupid indeed. So stupid that they didn’t trade a 1, a 3 and a 6 for Roy Williams, then pay him $54 million over 6 years. So stupid that they didn’t pay Terence Newman $50 million over 6 years. So stupid that they didn’t pay Leonard Davis $50 million over 7 years. So stupid that they didn’t pay Marion Barber $45 million over 7 years. So stupid that pretty much all the contracts they doled out this offseason were one-year deals. So stupid that they don’t have $20 million in dead money in 2012. What a bunch of dopes the Eagles are.

Well, one organization has a front office that seems to have put its team in a better position to make a strong run at a SB this year (and going forward) than the other. Obviously, the players have to go out and actually… you know… win one, or else the ultimate goal will not have been achieved. So I hear you there. But the point remains that one front office is pretty clearly doing a better job than the other.

Stronger run at a SB this year, I'll buy that

but going forward? Come on now, you signed an aging CB to huge money, have a QB who can’t make it through a full season, a WR that won’t go across the middle or return punts because he knows how fragile he is, signed another WR to a 1 year deal, and drafted an 27 (I think) year old lineman (typically takes at least a full season or two for lineman to build up enough for the NFL). That’s them praying for a SB this season or next, not a team that’s building for a strong playoff push for years to come.

Isn't that kind of the bottom line? Danny White made

it to the NFC championship game repeatedly, but he’s never been considered more than an also-ran by most Cowboys fans because he never won the big prize. Harsh and probably unfair, yes, but that’s the standard.

No matter how many neat-o moves the Eagles make year after year, unless they win the big one, it’s all for naught. No? Maybe they’ll get over the hump this year. If they don’t, after all the moves they made, no matter how lost cost they were (as you keep insisting), I would think it would be a pretty big black eye.

WR – Nuff said? Lol, he hasn’t done jack in this league yet.
TE – Please.
OT – Not younger. Just not. There’s really no arguing with age. And definitely not better.
LB – Not even any where in the ballpark age-wise. I hope that was a joke. Better? No question, perhaps the only area on the team where you can boast that.

Ehh, we may actually have Arkin starting at Guard this year, that tips the totals into the ’boys favor.

Alas, they’re still pretty even in age – but ours is undeniably better.

While your LBs are unproven I think Ware, James, Spencer, and Lee are 4 pretty good to go LBs, not to mention that Victor Butler is going to get a lot more snaps this year especially in certain packages so you may want to include his age as well.

Anyways, if Steve Smith – DeSean Jackson – Jeremy Maclin are all healthy that really is the best WR corps in the league – only because of Smith > Ogletree. I’d take Dez and Miles over D-Jax and J-Mac any day.

Oh, not arguing that Dallas has had its share of mistakes...

You listed enough to make me want to hit the whiskey, but I don’t think this is a good offseason for the Eagles. They are going all-in and after they bust out, you guys are going to be scratching your heads wondering where it all went wrong. The problem is that you upgraded positions of strength and decided to ignore positions of weakness, as others have already pointed out.

I guess the Eagles decided to go crazy in FA because of their recent success in the draft, and that’s fine, but I just don’t see it helping too much, especially when your star WR is pissed off about his contract and the entire team is drinking the “Dream Team” koolaid.

Eagles 10-6, first round exit in the playoffs. Sorry Philly, maybe next decade… but unless the Giants upset them again, at least the Phillies will be going to the World Series!

Well, now they have three awesome corners instead of two. Lots of 3-WR sets these days. And I’d pay $12 million to a player that completely shuts down one side of the field any day. He went for far less than most had projected.

I am not bashing the Eagles, because I think they are a well run team, and I don't think they have gone all in for 2011

but they have gone all in for 2011 to 2013 (or thereabouts) and if they do not win the Super Bowl in that time frame, you will not see a Super Bowl win in your lifetime

You wouldn’t say the Eagles are a little desperate this year? Andy’s been going at it for a long time and doesn’t have the elusive SB title yet, you have a QB who can’t make it through a whole season due to his style of play, much less multiple seasons, and paid a s—t ton for a CB who’s on the wrong side of 30. I’m a Ranger fan and we had this same type of discussion with Cliff Lee. If you pay someone that much money who you know will start his decline with multiple seasons left on his contract then it’s an all or nothing move. If y’all don’t win it in the next season or two then it’s a failed move IMO. Aso may be worth 12 mil this year and maybe next, but what about after that when he’s clearly in decline? I can’t find it right now, but I know his YPA has gone up each of the last 3 years and he has a total of 3 INTs in the last 4 years! I know he isn’t thrown to much, but that will change quickly once he starts losing his legs.

I don’t think this offseason was as good for the Eagles as the mediots claim it to be as well because instead of making weak areas stronger, you strengthened already strong positions.

by strobman on Aug 11, 2011 1:12 PM CDT up reply actions

You wouldn’t say the Eagles are a little desperate this year?

I dont get this whole desperate thing. I made this point in a post i mad on BGN. Check it out.

Eagles see weaknesses on their team → Eagles have lots of money → There are players available for teams to bid on→ Eagles bid on the ones they feel best fit their system and the best deals→ Players choose to play for The Eagles….

What are they doing thats wrong? You guys actually were 6 million over the cap last week, while were still under the cap. Does that mean you guys are desperate?

paid a s—t ton for a CB who’s on the wrong side of 30.

Come on bro. Your not serious are you? I also wrote something about this. Check it out.

Nnamdi made 16 million last year, this year hes making 9.4. Nnamdi is only getting 3 million more guaranteed than Kevin Kolb got in Arizona
Nnamdi is 30 years old. At the end of this contract he’ll be 35. CB’s in this league have the longest lifespan out of every other defensive position. Barely any contact, avoid the middle of the field mostly. Look at Charles Woodson, Champ Bailey, Sheldon Brown, Asante Samuel, Rod Woodson…
the last 3 years and he has a total of 3 INTs in the last 4 years! I know he isn’t thrown to much, but that will change quickly once he starts losing his legs.

When your playing the raiders, and your the QB. You line up at the LOS, you look at the defense. You Nnamdi on one side of the field, and see player X on the other side. Which side are you going to throw to?
NOw imagine being that same QB, looking over and seeing Nnamdi, on one side, Asante on the other, and DRC playing the slot.

The one season they threw to him 40+ times, he had 8 picks. Well see this year…

Ok I was going to go through each position and tell you how we got better. But i dont feel like it. So just look at this.

We improved at QB, RB, WR, TE, C, RG, RT, DT(2), DE, RCB, Nickle CB. So we improved in 12 out of 22 positions, to add to the positions we were already set at QB, LT, LG, SAM LB.

Thats like 16-17 positions filled with quality players, and a lot of those players have good layers behind them. You cant have pro-bowlers at every position. Your going to be stronger in some areas than others.

You will see how bad you guys really suck as soon as the season starts.

True...

There is nothing to argue. You are an Eagles fan. I’m a Cowboys fan.

You think you have a better team, and I know we have a better team. Enjoy the hype for the next few weeks. After that it’s all going to be downhill just like the Cowboys 2010 season.

by Damnsammit on Aug 11, 2011 1:35 PM CDT up reply actions

It absolutely blws my mind how much denial there is in sports. My god.

No games have been played, so all we have to go by RIGHT NOW is the team on paper. Well this Eagle team on PAPER is better than probably every other team in the league.

The front office’s job is to make the roster as talented and deep as possible for the season. They did that, and more.

Whether the teams performs on the field remains to be seen. But given the # of quality players all over the board, im assuming(i could be wrong) i say they perform pretty well.

Eagles... :)

by Kevin M. on Aug 11, 2011 1:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, typically the best teams on paper win it all..

I mean look at the last few Super Bowl winners. Clearly the best teams on paper in the pre-season.

with half the team on IR, I bet that would have changed lol

by Damnsammit on Aug 11, 2011 1:58 PM CDT up reply actions

I dont understand why you keep saying the same things? Did you not read the post you relied too?

Have you not read pretty much every comment from an Eagle fan on this post? DO you not understand what were saying? Let me go all caps for you.

HAVING THE BEST TEAM ON PAPER, DOES NOT MEAN YOU WILL WIN THE SUPERBOWL. BUT YOU HAVE A BETTER CHANCE TO WIN THE SUPERBOWL, THE MORE GOOD PLAYERS YOU HAVE RIGHT? WELL THATS ALL WERE SAYING, BECAUSE WE HAVE THE BEST TEAM ON PAPER WE FEEL OUR CHANCES TO WIN THE SUPERBOWL ARE HIGHER THAN OTHER TEAMS. IS THAT WRONG? I DONT THINK SO.

ITS NORMAL TO BE CONFIDENT WHEN YOU HAVE A GOOD TEAM. IF ITS LIKE WEEK 6, WERE 3-3 AND YOU SEE US WITH THIS MUCH CONFIDENCE THEN WERE IDIOTS. BUT RIGHT NOW, THERES NOTHING WRONG WITH WHAT WERE DOING.

THEY STILL HAVE TO PUT IN THE WORK, EFFORT, YADA-YADA….

I mean you guys are talking about this guy like hes some sort of legend.

He was the DC for Oakland defense. They were terrible at everything except pass defense(maybe why he was trying to get Nnamdi).

You guys get on us for signing quality players, and being happy about it without them playing and backing it up.

Well what are you doing? You hoping Rob’s a good DC, you dont know.

I wont look it up. Lets say your right and he did.

Its ok for you guys to be excited(and make predictions) based of a coordinator who was good(according to you) 4-5 years ago, very average the past 2-3 years.

But were not allowed to be excited(and make predictions) when we sign like 5 pro-bowlers, 6-7 starters, solid role players?

You can get excited all you want. In fact, continue to toot your horns. We will all be laughing while your superstar dream team comes stumbling out of the gates.

I’m sensing a 3-3 or 4-2 start for you guys… and that’s only because you get BUF and STL is your first 6 games.

same starting QB, TE, RB, and 2 of the same CBs. not to mention your improvement at WR involves a guy who may not even play till week 8 this year. So that knocks you down to about 6 of 22 ‘new’ improved positions.

Actually, I agree with you

I think the Iggle FO has done a very good job managing the salary cap. I feel like they did sort of luck into Vick, but I don’t blame them for stocking up while he is playing the best football of his career.

Still, injuries, luck and gameplanning also play a big role in winning championships. Let’s hold off on the annointing oil till they get on the field.

They are not buying a super bowl team

I hate the eagles as much as anyone else however they have managed The cap extremely well and put themselves in a position to make these moves. Even with all these moves they made does not make them the best team in the NFC . There linebacking core is very questionable as is there o line IMO .. Eagles are all hype at this point they still have to prove there worth on the field..Tine will tell
