Kitna-More valuable than we think?

The game the other night got me thinking. If the coaching staff, mainly Jason Garrett, is comfortable with how Stephen Mcgee is progressing, could Jon Kitna be a valuable trade piece?

Star-divide

In a difficult situation, Kitna came in and wasn't our main problem last year. He can definitely still play. Some of the teams have major questions at the QB spot. You have some teams that have young QBs that they do not want to play right away. For example, let's just say that Matt Hasselbeck now with the Titans, who's been injury prone goes down in the next two weeks or even during the season, for an extended period of time, Jon Kitna has shown that he will help a young QB and is not a prima donna. He also is close to possibly retiring, so if a team trades for him this year, they could probably still go with the young QB next year. Also it might not just be a team with a rookie QB that he could be valuable too. Let's say Miami is not happy with Chad Henne or Matt Moore, that could be a spot for Kitna. What about Chicago? If Cutler goes down, and they don't believe in the backup, Mike Martz has a relationship with Kitna from Detroit. I don't know what the Cowboys could get for Kitna, but if a team loses a QB, it could be to our advantage because as we all know now: it's a QB league, and if you don't have a quality one, you really don't have a chance.

i doubt anyone would give us anything for kitna, but if.. they did, id say prob no more than a 7th

woman !, dont try to understand em, dont try to make them understand you, for they are a breed apart ! lol

yeah

but just for us, we could send him to cinci, i can’t imagine other place, but even that is almost impossible, what would they give up? a 7th rounder?
i think kitna is more valuable here as tony’s backup

by ratware on Aug 13, 2011 4:01 PM CDT reply actions

Right now it's hard to tell...

Where we could send him, but like I said if there’s a major injury, esp. at a spot where they have an unproven QB and signed a vet, which shows they aren’t comfortable with that young QB playing yet, it could be beneficial to us. There’s always a freak injury, and having a truly proven backup QB can only help us because when you look at the rest of the league, their backups are unproven,

well name the candidates

which team is in that position, which team is an injury away to trade for Kitna?

by ratware on Aug 13, 2011 8:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Read the piece

And you’ll find out the teams I said could be an injury away from a trade for Kitna.

by aubatron2011 on Aug 13, 2011 8:10 PM CDT up reply actions

seriously those are your candidates, they're not in a situation to trade for kitna even with that injury

the dolphins are playing matt moore and any JAG long before giving up something for kitna, the titans would prefer send locker through the hard way of learning and chicago they have been throwing away draft picks in the last years so they are not doing it againg for a vert who has one or two years left in the tank

what i want to say is to make that trade the team not only needs to suck at QB but to be really desesperate and fool, if a were some of those teams, let’s say miami i’d rather go with moore and see what he can do, you don’t trade draft picks for 38 years old fellas

by ratware on Aug 14, 2011 12:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Titans and Miami

If the Titans wanted Locker to learn the hard way, they never would have signed Hasselbeck. It’s that simple. Just like the Vikings would not have acquired McNabb if they believed in Ponder enough to start him from day one. The Miami situation is interesting because if Sparano doesn’t win, he’s gone and if Moore or Henne doesn’t workout that could make them desperate. My point of this post is as you said at some point there will be an injury to a QB, and if the Cowboys got an offer that they didn’t anticipate for Kitna they would have to seriously consider it.

by aubatron2011 on Aug 14, 2011 1:10 PM CDT up reply actions

because a team may get desperate*

by aubatron2011 on Aug 14, 2011 1:10 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah they don't want it that way for locker but if matt gets hurt

they’re not trading for kitna
however my point is not about specific QB situations, my point is about nobody giving a draft pick for kitna, if kitna gets released could be signed but give away a draft pick for him, no

by ratware on Aug 14, 2011 9:26 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd take

Kitna over that dude down in Mississippi. What’s his name? Brett Something?

by aubatron2011 on Aug 14, 2011 10:55 PM CDT up reply actions

sure, me too

but were not GM’s of any team

by ratware on Aug 15, 2011 10:30 AM CDT up reply actions

I know that

But that’s why Kitna could be valuable, I mean the 49ers brought in Culpepper for crying out loud.

by aubatron2011 on Aug 15, 2011 11:07 AM CDT up reply actions

wow, shoking news, the 49ers must be deseperate

however they didn’t give up a draft pick, it’s like when we say low risk high reward, culpeper was brought by the 49ers because they didn’t haave anything to lose, but in a potential trade for kitna the draft pick is to lose, nobody is giving up a draft pick for him

kitna is more valuable to dallas than anyone else...

A old qb vet who only got like 3 years max in this league…I believe he might be out anyway to make room for another qb and mcgee.

And others have brought up a valuable point

Kitna is mentoring Stephen McGee and maybe Romo in a different capacity

by 2tightendpkg on Aug 13, 2011 5:01 PM CDT reply actions

Why do fans say this?

If we always went out and kept a “mentor” at every position we’d have to many older players on the downside of their career (like we did before). Who ever is producing can mentor, if a player can’t admit he did some things wrong because the guy in front of them is younger then they are then they don’t belong on the team.

Kitna’s a serviceable backup but if Romo is back and McGee shows more upswing then let Kitna go if someone wants him. Personally I’d try to dangle him out there for Miami since they like picking up the leftovers anyway. Wish I could see Matt Moore back on the team.

I agree with everything you guys have said...

But if there is an offer from another GM, one that Jerry and the rest of the FO can’t resist because there will be some major injury we don’t know about that causes that GM to panic, I would pull the trigger.

by aubatron2011 on Aug 13, 2011 5:13 PM CDT reply actions

For the right offer I think everyone should be tradeable

We were apparently offered a 2nd round pick for Martellus by the Bengals years ago, they should have pulled the trigger on that. I think Kitna is worth more than a 7th pick to us. We usually find better UDFA than we find with our 7th round picks. For a 4th I would trade him in a heartbeat, for a 5th-6th I’d consider it, but you never know what Jerry Jones will do.

by 2tightendpkg on Aug 13, 2011 6:24 PM CDT reply actions

You know who's valuable?

Stephen McGee. He can turn into that Kevin Kolb type QB.

Residing on the BEast Coast.

by DCyanks21 on Aug 13, 2011 6:29 PM CDT reply actions

I agree

though IF We do trade McGee then We almost HAVE to draft a QB high the next year…which I really don’t want to do….

Here’s a theoretical play from 2010: Snap. Tony takes 7 step drop. Tony looks left at Miles, who is doubled, and looks right to where Roy Williams should be…but instead sees Colombo on his back and a Defensive End foaming at the mouth jumping over Marc’s carcass. Tony proceeds to run like hell and look for Witten

Am I the most optimistic Cowboys fan in the World? Yes, due to an "unfortunate accident" to the previous holder of the title.

I wasn't talking about McGee in this post

But they are both valuable. I just think the fact that we have something that just about no other team has: a proven veteran backup QB could help out if a team needs a QB for whatever reason and they do not want to go the you-know-who route. But that hinges on whether the coaches believe McGee is ready to be the primary backup.

by aubatron2011 on Aug 13, 2011 8:33 PM CDT up reply actions

What stands out to me about Kitna.....

is that he wouldn’t throw deep last year. You’re not going to win alot if you don’t spread the defense and atleast make them think you’ll go deep. Defenses were creeping up on the line of scrimmage and killing the running game for Dallas . 5 to 10 yard dinks and dunks won’t do it. You’re playing scared and it shows ala Brad Johnson. Kitna will be more and more like that as he has shown. Cut him and make McGee #2 or atleast make Kitna the 3rd QB.

by Martin79 on Aug 13, 2011 9:30 PM CDT reply actions

Kitna LOVES Dez Bryant

Never saw a QB take to a rookie WR so quickly since Cunningham and Randy moss in Minnesota.

Kitna would throw it up to Bryant when he was double covered…and with bryant’s crazy ability…that is not necessarily a bad thing.

I hope Romo trusts Bryant like Kitna did.

I fear Romo relying too much on Austin and Witten based on familiarity…but make no mistake, Bryant is a DeMarcus Ware-Level Superstar in waiting.

Go John Kitna!

I'm looking for the article published here that debunks the notion that Romo over-relies

on Witten and Austin, particularly Witten. I’ll provide the link when I find it.
