This of course being the proverbial, "If you and your friend are being chased by a tiger...." scenario.(Hat tip to Dunkman) You don't have to outrun the tiger, merely your friend (sorry dude...). So how does this pertain to the Cowboys? I am so glad you asked. First off though, I want to thank OCC for being the kind, generous, soul that he is...because I will be using A LOT of stuff from a couple of posts of his......
Frankly, I wanted to do this post before the draft, but I was really busy with my "How they would fit" series. And never was able to get it done then. "But what about during the Lockout? This would have been awesome then!" Yeah, true, but there was this little thing called the Dallas Mavericks winning the NBA championship. Yeah, that was kind of a big deal for me. Then we had the flurry of the CBA, then FA, then I penned arguably my best work to date (What The Heck Is Air Garrett?) then the follow-up for it (What the Heck Is Air Garrett? Vol. 2). So really I am just now being able to sit down and do the "research" necessary (all 15 minutes of it..lol). But I digress... To the JUMP!
Okay, now that we got past all that, and really this will be a very simple post for all that BS...We all know that Marc Colombo sucked last year, right? Well thanks to the awesome people over at PFF (and our own resident German OCC) we know exactly HOW bad he sucked...Here is his "grade" via PFF:
| Player | POS | NFL Rank | # of snaps | 2010 Overall grade |
| Marc Colombo |
RT | 36/37 | 1,027 | -34.1 |
Yep Columbo was bad. We all know this. Why are you making us relive the agony? To give you a little hope....
| Player | POS | NFL Rank | # of snaps | 2010 Overall grade |
| Anthony Davis |
RT | 35/37 | 1,011 | -26.6 |
Wait... What does Anthony Davis have to do with anything? He plays for the 49er's! Well, I will tell you: Everything.
According to OCC's post a few months ago (back in Jan, Can A High Draft Pick Be An Immediate Upgrade For Cowboys O-line?) Anthony Davis graded out as the worst starting Rookie Tackle over the last 3 years. Think about that. He graded out as the worst. Yet even then, he grades out better than Colombo. So having a Rookie over at RT may not be such a bad thing right? Because even if, for some unknown reason, Tyron Smith is as bad as Anthony Davis (which I will look at in a minute) then he will STILL be an upgrade over Marc Colombo.
Now, will that happen? That I highly doubt. Just going off measurables Tyron Smith blows Davis out of the water. Look and compare:
Anthony Davis
| Height: 6050 Weight: 323 40 Yrd Dash: 5.36 20 Yrd Dash: 3.01 10 Yrd Dash: 1.82 |
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 21 Vertical Jump: 33 Broad Jump: 08'03" 20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.97 3-Cone Drill: 8.17 |
Tyron Smith
| Height: 6050 Weight: 307 40 Yrd Dash: 4.93 20 Yrd Dash: 2.87 10 Yrd Dash: 1.69 |
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 31 Vertical Jump: 29 Broad Jump: 09'01" 20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.68 3-Cone Drill: 7.47 |
Oh and Did I mention that Smith is getting schooled by none other than DeMarcus Ware? Yeah, I think Tyron will be Okay.....
But What about the RG spot? Well that is a Different Story....
| Player | POS | NFL Rank | # of snaps | 2010 Overall grade |
| Leonard Davis |
RG | 8/40 | 1,077 | +6.7 |
Davis actually (according to PFF) performed above average, so IF Arkin does get the start (and that is looking likely) then We will see a downgrade there (the worst was this: Andy Levitre G BUF -10.6). However, most rookie guards aren't that bad, generally performing average to slightly below average...so there is that....
Just something to think about.....
