Debunking the Big Bang Theory
With running back by committee being a common thing used around the league today, often the Thunder Lightning aspect of it is expected to be a general form and couldn't be farther from the truth in discussing the running back situation in big D. People ask who will be the power back? Who will be the goal line back? I'm here to say in Garrett's offense it's not needed.
Barber was a luxury more than a necessity. Garrett molds his offense from Norv Turner and the great system of the early Charger days. The back of preference is a versatile back who can make big plays in the running game. Most great backs that can get the tough yards aren't the typical big back. In Garrett's system, the RB is relied upon in the passing game as well to create mismatches. The selection of DeMarco Murray, arguably the best pass catching back in the draft, reiterates Garrett's approach. Instead of a big back when Felix rests, it's a similar back with game breaking ability, therefore keeping the defense back on its heels. For better or worse, this will be Choice's final year as Murray will eventually take the role of 2nd back.
With Felix showing the ability to run between the tackles and finish off runs with a physical style, it only makes him that much more valuable and versatile. Barber's declining presence won't be missed much in Dallas. What once was a good niche in picking up tough yards, will be far outweighed by Felix and Murray explosive play making ability.
My point is in the system a big back isn't needed, in fact it goes against the system's principles. Garrett's playbook will be opened even more with the presence of Murray, Felix Jones starting and the O-line getting younger and more athletic. With Tyron Smith having a good camp and locked in as the RT, Doug Free re-signed and locked in at LT and the young LGs battling out for the spot, the screen game will be heavily used this year with the departures of 33 yearr old, 360 lb Davis and 32 year old 340 lb Colombo. Bottom line, the Big Bang Theory isn't needed here in Big D.
