Obviously Abe Elam is the hot topic right now, but I am wondering why it is that the Cowboys have not signed him or brought him in yet. Are they just trying to negotiate some kind of contract and not getting what they want yet or what is the deal? I find it strange that I haven't heard ANY news involving which safety(ies) we may be interested in. Right now I have three guys that we are apparently rumored to be targeting, but that is all I have heard are rumors, primarily fan speculation. Here are the three players that I have heard rumored or linked to the cowboys, which any of the three I would be fine with but I do have a preference. But realistically, no one is head and shoulders better then the other two, very close in my mind.
1. Abe Elam - Of course, like I said, Abe Elam seems to be the front runner in the media, just because he played in Rob Ryan's scheme in Cleveland. It is common for new coaches/coordinators to bring players with them from their previous team. He would be able to come in and lead the defense and would be familiar with the style as well. I haven't heard anything about him lately though or if the cowboys are even still talking to him
Brodney Pool - Apparently, as of about two hours ago, Brodney Pool has re-signed with the Jets. After seeing OCC's posts and the stat comparisons how all of the safeties stack up against each other and who is left, he seems like he would be a good fit in our scheme. That and the fact that he played in a similar scheme with brother Rex and the Jets, so he should be able to catch in very quickly.
3. Dashon Goldson - This guy, was my top out of the three of these guys. Call me crazy but I think he could be good in the scheme. in 2009 he had a great year with 4 INT and 3 FF. Don't know what happened to him this past year but he did not have a repeat performance. Part of that could be because of the coaching changes and mayhem going on in San Francisco. He ranks right next to Abram Elam on the PFF best available overall free agent safeties chart that OCC posted a while back. In fact, just slightly ahead of him, although both players ranked in the RED (below average) play for last year. Could be better with some better players surrounding them. He is also the most recent that I have heard anything out of connecting with the cowboys. On monday, via twitter, he stated "I'm definitely keepin an open mind. Meanin I won't mind takin my talents else where to a place where I'm wanted... Whether thts san fran, dallas or whreva". That means one of two things. 1. He knows that Dallas in in need of some safeties (who doesn't) or 2. Dallas has been talking to him.
It would just be nice to see who we are talking to, although the front runner seems to be Abe Elam, which I am for because of his experience in Rob Ryan's scheme and his abilities ranked just behind Dashon Goldson. I do believe Dashon could be a more special player though at the position. Elam is faster, but Goldson can bring the wood. Goldson is also younger and has a season where he was seen as a ball hawk on his resume (2009) but Elam has experience in the scheme. Compare and contrast all you want. Which one of them is more of a Jason Garrett RKG though. That is the question, as well as who comes at a better price.
