Davis, Colombo, Barber, Williams and now Gurode. Jason and the
Argonauts Cowboys have been cutting the fat (in some cases literally), but only on the offensive side of the ball. Olshansky, Newman and Brooking all fit the profile of the above players, so why are they still donning the Star?
One could make the case that Newman still has skills. However, is Jenkins-Newman-Scandrick truly a significant upgrade over Jenkins-Scandrick-Ball/McCann, especially considering Newman's injury history (genuine question for those of you with the requisite knowledge)? Maybe they are shopping him, but who, other than the Giants, would trade for him at that salary.
Brooking, OK I'll give them this one. The depth at ILB is scary thin without Brooking.
Here are the plausible possibilities that I can up with:
1- JG is letting RR decide and the Great Robowski isn't willing to make the call until after the last Pre-Season game. If this is the case then JG needs to learn more defense. Letting your coordinators make the call on issues that are within their individual control is important to do, but the HC, like any leader, must assure that it fits with the overall strategy of the team. Keeping Olshansky sends the message that the defensive players are not in the same danger of being cut as the offensive side.
2- JG is fully and truly in full control of the offense, but must consult the GM when it comes to personnel moves on the D. I'm sure there is some of this going on and will only be erased if Garrett brings another Lombardi Trophy to Valley Ranch.
