The Way of the game DAL vs MIA 9/1

The Way of the Game: Preseason DAL v MIA

Apologies to those that followed my draft related posts that I was unable to finish, I unfortunately had a family tragedy occur not long after my last post. Sometimes when life happens other things become irrelevant. However, I am back now and excited for the football season.
These are my final thoughts from the game.

Star-divide

Phillip Tanner gave this to Lonyae Miller after the game... Burnttoast_jpg_medium

Miller meet toast... toast meet Miller... you guys have a lot in common...

Lonyae Miller may have size and athleticism, but is capable of only slamming into the back of his own guard. Whatever potential you showed us last season has apparently been lost. Get him some lasik surgery so he can see his hole open up for once... or cut him, whatever.

Speaking of Tanner and Miller, these guys are mostly the same athletically. Seriously, look it up on draft scout if you don't believe me. Difference is, Tanner has vision, and Lonyae does not. Tanner has a football future, Lonyae does not.

Don't be so quick to discount Choice. While Tanner has shown some good things this preseason, athletically he is a poor man's Tashard Choice. I like Tanner, and believe we will find a way to keep him to develop for the future, and after AutographGate I am not too high on Choice, but he still brings alot to the table, like experience in our complicated offensive system, especially should there be an injury to Felix Jones. Instead of pushing Choice off the roster, it is likely the extra DB, WR or TE that sees the turk instead (though Bennett's injury complicates things). The only way Choice is off this team is if we receive appropriate compensation in a trade, which is NOT a late round pick.

DeMarco Murray is looking fantastic. Speed, power, catching ability. He is exciting to watch and may be a star in the making. I was particular impressed that he was able to get his pads low at the point of contact, which I thought was going to be a problem coming out of college.

Martin Rucker has shown up this preseason, as well as last season. I don't know that we are to that point, but I wouldn't have my feelings hurt if he bumped Bennett off the roster. At least he catches the football when he has the opportunity. As a 2nd/3rd TE you have to be consistent and take advantage of your limited looks. At that position, I take consistency over unfulfilled potential. Not sure how long Bennett's blocking ability can save him.

Seems like Manuel Johnson and Jesse Holley are almost the same person. Unfortunately for them, only one makes the roster, likely Holley. Good luck to them both.

Did anyone else watching channel 11 that in this game and the last, the referees annoucements came through almost in an underlay to the audio for the commercials? Probably a mistake, but I thought it was cool. Paid more attention during the commercials because of it.

Some people hated Jerry Jones in the 3rd Q of the last game. I LOVED it. It was a rare look into the alcohol soaked mind of the decision maker of our beloved team, and we were able to glean a little of his thought process, even if you didn't like what you heard.

Mike Jenkins is on Jerry's crap list, and mine. Stinger or not, you are NOT a proven all pro. You do NOT have the right to decide if you want to sit out training camp. Just another "Business Decision". Ole. I do not know how the Cowboys are going to handle this, but if any player has shown an unearned "sense of entitlement", its this guy. Do something about it.

Watching Lumpy play in preseason is comical. During the regular season not so much. Please football gods don't make us play him during the real games.

John Phillips is baby Witten. That's all I have to say about that.

If anyone misses Roy Williams because you think he still has potential, just relax. He is still on our team. Just take a look at Raymond Radway. Same athleticism, same lanky look. Same limited route running. Difference is, Radway is an unpolished rookie UDFA with upside (oh and he TRIES), what's your excuse Roy??

I love Radway and his potential, but I think he is too raw for the 53 and ends up on the practice squad in favor of either Holley or Johnson (or Tanner). [EDIT: Hope his knee is ok, looked like he had a bad twist. Maybe goes IR now, and made this decision much easier for the 'Boys. Just hope he is able to carry the momentum into next season and not end up like Teddy W.]

Hey Dave Rayner- if I wanted to hold my breath on every field goal, we can just keep Buehler out there, he has been missing them just fine on his own. Thanks for giving the job to Bailey. Probably a placeholder till Forbath comes off the PUP anyway. I believe that we may carry two kickers this season.

Like it or not, I think Ansah goes to the practice squad. We have our two starters, and so far I think the coaches have seen more from both Church and McCray in coverage. I don't think anyone wants to give up on him, but there just may be too many bottom roster potential guys to keep him on the 53. Also did nothing to acquit himself in the kicking game, and we have others that can provide the same potential in that respect.

Stephen McGee has a cannon arm. Unfortunately his release is too slow. Maybe I am spoiled by Romo, but it just seems like his loading motion takes about a half second too long. Still like his potential though.

Sean Lissemore is a stud. Period. Josh Brent is not. I keep wanting this guy to succeed, but he does not have the ability to anchor like his size suggests, and does not have the quickness to make up for it. Don't be shocked for the cowboys to keep on eye on the waiver wire for a back up NT.

I think Cummings makes the squad over Lemon, but I hope we find a way to keep them both. I like Lemons aggressiveness and potential.

If Igor makes this team I am placing a flaming bag of bear turds outside the door to valley ranch.

I like Mario Butler, but his speed keeps him from being starter material. This will be a hard cut, as he has shown more than some of the other young guys, but you also know that he has a low ceiling.

If a fullback makes this team, it think it will be Gronkowski. He got a few looks early. But I think that there is a better than 60% chance that this team rolls without one. Chapas has shown some good things, I think he at least goes PS.

Jeremy Parnell looked awful tonight. As, expected, did Sam Young. We have to do something about this, and hope we can pull a gem off the waiver wire or a decent FA. Back up interior depth is a concern as well, but even more so for the tackles.

Thanks for reading my Gameday ramblings.

And that was against reserves. If they had to come into game action, I would rather just bench Romo.

Glad you are back Cowboy
I unfortunately had a family tragedy occur not long after my last post. Sometimes when life happens other things become irrelevant.

Sorry about the first part….that always sucks. Agree with you on the second part.

as for this:

Unfortunately his release is too slow. Maybe I am spoiled by Romo, just seems like his loading motion takes about a half second too long

considering that Romo has one of the fastest releases in the league, there are very few QB’s that wouldn’t seem slow in comparison….just saying…

And as far as AOA going to the PS…won’t happen…if only because he would get snapped up in a heartbeat….

I think we Carry two kickers also….Buehler and Forbath(on the PUP)….

Here’s a theoretical play from 2010: Snap. Tony takes 7 step drop. Tony looks left at Miles, who is doubled, and looks right to where Roy Williams should be…but instead sees Colombo on his back and a Defensive End foaming at the mouth jumping over Marc’s carcass. Tony proceeds to run like hell and look for Witten

Am I the most optimistic Cowboys fan in the World? Yes, due to an "unfortunate accident" to the previous holder of the title.

Thanks

I like AOA, his future just depends on how the coaches see the roster shaking out.

Waiver Wire

What quality tackle do you think the Cowboys are going to find on the waiver wire?

You will probably get someone who is worse than either Parnell or Young.

What do you wanna do resign Marc Columbo?

by Jonathan Stern on Sep 1, 2011 11:34 PM CDT reply actions

There will be a waiver wire or FA

candidate available. They don’t have to be all-pros, just have to be a little more substantial than the current back up tackles and able to step in in a pinch.

by TheCowboyWay on Sep 2, 2011 3:26 AM CDT up reply actions

they won’t be better than Young or Parnell. Probably not.

I dunno bring back Flozal Adams he is probably better than the guys on the waiver wire.

by Jonathan Stern on Sep 2, 2011 11:33 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah good call

Young is an All -Star. Oh wait, he just got cut.

by TheCowboyWay on Sep 5, 2011 9:54 AM CDT up reply actions

I know a guy that might be available

He was a first round draft choice out of Florida state in 2005. #19 overall. He used to play for the Rams.

Lets try and get him.

by Jonathan Stern on Sep 2, 2011 12:21 PM CDT up reply actions

oh yea and lets trade anthony spencer for him (just like carpentar) and let him start opening day on the last drive cuz he won’t hold on the last play and cost us the game cuz that can’t be alex barron right?

Yes you are crazy to suggest Bennett over Rucker

Rucker is a nice receiver (against 2nd and 3rd teamers at least) and is making some progress as a blocker according to Garrett. But he’s making progress from almost zero.

Bennett’s drops are certainly frustrating. But I don’t think a lot of fans appreciate really what a good blocker Bennett is. He is often a DOMINANT blocker and is a MAJOR part of this run game. Felix’s touchdown against the vikings when we were finally able to run it in from 5 yards out, who was at the point of attack? Bennett. There were a lot of good blocks on that play, but Felix practically runs up Bennett’s back on his way into the end zone following the path he had cleared. That’s just one example. They run behind Bennett at the point of attack a lot. Bennett is excellent at using his hands and using leverage at the line of scrimmage to stand defenders up, turn them away from the play, and collapse the edge of the line of scrimmage (which is a very different skill than the lead blocking of an F-back).

Bennett absolutely needs to be more consistent as a pass catcher, and being a great blocker is not enough for where he was picked, so relative to his draft position he’s a disappointment. I’m as frustrated about that as the next fan.

But Rucker is nowhere near being able to play the role in this offense that Bennett plays, which is first controlling the LoS and establishing a physical run game, and then being a passing threat to create versatility off of that.

I hope Rucker makes the team and maybe has potential to fill that role in the future, but Bennett’s blocking ability will surely save him for one more season. Then he’s a free agent and he can go out and get paid whatever he can get and get a more prominent role, and prove what we can do with more opportunities. Maybe he just needs to get in a rhythm which he can never get here behind Witten!

I don't disagree with Bennett's value, the problem for him

Is that he is out for the next four weeks or so, which has opened the door for another to step in. I should have clarified, it’s not that Rucker directly makes Bennett expendable, but while he is away we get an up close look at a Phillips/Rucker combo (assuming Rucker is retained). If you see enough from these guys in both the running and passing games, does Bennett hit the trade block? I don’t know, but with free agency pending next year, and if you feel you will loose him anyway, and if you feel good about the other two, might as well pull the trigger and try to get some return on investment.

by TheCowboyWay on Sep 2, 2011 3:35 AM CDT up reply actions

it's always speculated about trading Bennett

but I just don’t see the Phillips/Rucker combo being nearly is effective as the Bennett/Phiiips combo, this season, once Bennett returns. Bennett is too valuable to this team even with his drops.

Well either way

Thankfully a decision does not have to be made right now. We have about four weeks or so of real game time to find out were we stand and allow the right decision to be made. Without Bennett’s injury, this is not even debatable.

by TheCowboyWay on Sep 2, 2011 3:53 AM CDT up reply actions

It's not up to Jenkins... and stingers can be serious

I seriously doubt Jenkins is the one making the final decision about whether he plays in preseason. I can understand Jerry’s (and fans’) frustration but I don’t think it’s fair to blame him for not playing because of an injury any more than we would any other player.

And we shouldn’t minimize the seriousness of a stinger. Because the immediate effect can go away in a few minutes and a player can return to the game in the case of a mild stinger, we tend to say it’s “just a stinger” and expect it to be minor. But a stinger is injury to the nerve in the neck, and can result in weakness and lack of range of motion that can last for weeks or months. Further injuring the nerve before it has healed properly increases the chance of long-term and even permanent nerve damage, weakness in the arm and limited range of motion.

Despite Jerry’s frustration, I would trust the training staff to not risk injury unnecessarily and to put him out there only when he’s ready, and protect him for games that matter, and I don’t think we should blame him for not being allowed to play.

by scottmaui on Sep 2, 2011 2:34 AM CDT reply actions

Looking at the situation individually and abstractly,

Yes, the stinger could be more serious and it should not be taken lightly. However, the problem is that this is not a singular situation and Jenkins has already set the precedent for “business decisions” on numerous occasions. This has lead to a loss of the benefit of the doubt for him.

Also, in pregame, he stated it was the coach that held him out, not the trainer. Which to me is a different situation entirely. If the coach is the one to hold him out, he could have fought for (and won) the right to play, at least a few series if he really wanted too. It definitively would have went a long way in restoring my confidence in him (and i am sure a few others that actually count).

by TheCowboyWay on Sep 2, 2011 3:48 AM CDT up reply actions

well the coach is probably listening to the trainer

the coach, not the trainer, makes the final decision. just because Jenkins said it was the coach doesn’t mean it wasn’t because of a legitimate medical concern. Bottom line to me is that this type of decision is different from ole’ing on the tackle. That is clearly Jenkin’s decision. Whether medical staff of coach, I seriously doubt this was Jenkin’s decision. Garrett/Ryan said he could play and he declined. Not likely.

That doesn't even make sense, Coach only makes final decision

IF he is medically cleared to play. Which means if the coach made the decision, he was medically cleared to play, period. Which leads me to my point, he could have fought for playing time (or at the very least made the appearance of it).
