Report: Cowboys To Sign CB Frank Walker; Move At Running Back Coming?

According to this report from ESPN, the Cowboys worked out veteran cornerback Frank Walker today, and intend to sign him as soon as a roster spot is made available.

Walker worked out for the team Tuesday morning.

Walker, who will be entering his ninth season in the league, has played with New York Giants, Green Bay Packers, Baltimore Ravens and Minnesota Vikings. Walker was in training camp with the Tennessee Titans this summer but was one of the last cuts.

Walker is being brought in due to the injury bug that has affected the Cowboys secondary. CB1 Terence Newman missed the entire preseason and week one with a groin injury, but could possibly return to face the 49ers. CB2 Mike Jenkins was injured all camp as well, and then suffered two more injuries during the Jets game. His toughness can't be questioned as he willed himself through the game. CB3 Orlando Scandrick left the Jets game early in the second quarter with a ankle injury and is expected to miss 3-4 weeks. There were times when backup safety Danny McCray was getting snaps at corner behind Alan Ball and Bryan McCann.

The Cowboys could have had their eye on Walker since the final cuts, but by waiting until after week one, Walker's salary for 2011 will not be guaranteed.

[UPDATE] The Cowboys have signed Walker, and released TE Martin Rucker to make roster room. The team has also signed back FB Tony Fiammetta and released WR Laurent Rovinson [/UPDATE]

Follow the jump for some speculation about where the roster spot could come from.

Star-divide

Playing a bit of connect the dots, there could be a roster spot being opened up by making a move at the running back position. Fourth-year running back Tashard Choice has provided a few somewhat ominous tweets about his time with the Cowboys and things ahead in his future.

Cowboy fans thanks for all the support through the years & def right now after the tough loss Sunday. I wanna say thank you and much respectless than a minute ago via TweetCaster for Android Favorite Retweet Reply

Please note, this dot-connecting is purely speculative, and the roster opening could easily come from other places. Choice didn't have the best of games Sunday, rushing or in pass protection. UDFA Phillp Tanner best attribute from the preseason was his constant fighting for yardage but was a game day inactive. The coaching staff may be regretting not having him available for a certain 1st and goal from the 3 in Sunday's fourth quarter.

Hat Tip to @lakedog19352 for bringing the Choice tweets to my attention earlier today, and don't forget to follow us @BloggingTheBoys on Twitter.

if it is Choice that gets cut

I have a strange feeling the Cowboys will regret it. I like the guy.

Let's see...

which teams lost RB’s or had them dinged up significantly this weekend:

Denver’s Knowshon Moreno is undergoing an MRI on his hamstring: http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/5163/knowshon-moreno
The Texans have questions at RB with Derrick Ward and Arian Foster both banged up: http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/2925/derrick-ward
The Rams have Steven Jackson nursing a Quad “week to week” and an oft injured Cadillac Williams as the backup: http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/1663/steven-jackson

Not a lot of significant RB injuries (thankfully) in Week 1. Everyone knows John Fox loves to run the ball with multiple RB’s. Moreno hasn’t exactly set the league on fire. They still have McGahee, but he didn’t look outstanding Monday night either. Other than that, they have a bunch of nobodies. Choice would be a good fit in Fox’s system.

Regret it how so?

Just askin. Do you think he goes somewhere else and does great? I just don’t think he has any value for us right now. He doesn’t play special teams and he can’t block. I think he does a solid job running the ball and i think he provides nice depth. But i can totally understand him being cut.

We're here to win football games. The way to do that is to tell him and to get on him at the right times. I do that when you guys (media) don't see and watch.''

What else makes a strong leader?

"You win,'' Romo said. "You're a very good leader once you win.

"That's' what we're going to do.''

by TARHEEL PAUL on Sep 13, 2011 2:45 PM CDT up reply actions

yep

I think he goes and helps another team. I do agree that he seems to be in the doghouse and might not have value to the Boys, but i think some team will come up on a good back. Kind of a sucky situation.

i think Choice offers a legit backup if Felix were get injuried

it would be hard to imagine Murray or Tanner getting the start if something happened to felix for a few games. i’m not a Choice fan but until he is replaced thats a lot to put on 2 rookies entering the NFL.

Thank you!

Felix Jones can follow two possible career paths:

1. mediocre starter
2. best change-of-pace back in league

It’s pretty obvious….

by bewareofdware on Sep 13, 2011 2:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Agree with Chia on this

Murray if given the chance will produce very well.

But I will say, I liked what I saw of Felix on Sunday considering it was the Jets.

"The tone is business," Garrett said. "Let's get to work. The Giants are going to be at the Meadowlands on Sunday at 4:15. They're an awfully good football team. We have to get ready for them."

Running back

as people have argued in why Murray was a wasted pick is the easiest plug in and produce position in the NFL.

Choice?

My question is why does he not get on the field much and why did they draft Murray? My answer would be that they do not trust him to block? If this is the case he has little value to us. He’s been here long enough to learn it, if he hasn’t he probably never will. He runs well enough, so why does he not play? I can’t see anyone giving much for him as it doesn’t look like he will be here next year?

less we forget

It was vs Pitt that the young choice came in as a rookie and did the improbable against the vaunted Steeler defense… In this day and age especially at the RB position you got to stay hunger and I just don’t think he still had that fire, when Barber was cut and he wasn’t automatically anointed the #2 spot…

I look at it differently. That was a 2 man pattern and

Revis usually does not get help so he plays in over-man position to the inside and usually high. Dez is suppose to fight for the ball and come back for it. With only 2 guys out on that route IF Romo is to consider him then Dez has to do his job by either getting the ball or not letting anyone other than him get it (but he was tired and unfocused because of the quad…I mean did you see how patheticly he tried to tackle Revis after the pick)

The ball is thrown before the WR cuts.

Romo had faith in Dez doing the same thing he did earlier when you were hollering that Dez took over Revis island.

It was an aggressive move on Romo’s part and I would be willing to bet that he learns from it and takes better care of the ball for at least the next few games. But if we threw all the guys under a bus when they made a mistake we wouldn’t have a team left.

Even Brady and Manning make mistakes like that in big games….I know because I watched them happen.

Do you really want to go down this road?

Because, seriously, we’re talking about Super Bowl vs. week 1. Manning may have thrown a game losing INT in the Super Bowl, but Romo has NEVER thrown anything in a Super Bowl, except maybe his remote at the TV.

His point was

that even the best QB (according to BSPN) do throw game-losing interceptions at the worst possible time. He’s not comparing anybody to anybody, just making a point via a good example.

How many times have we heard that elite QB do not throw picks in important situations: well that’s not right.

Brandon himself says that comparing Romo to Brady is like comparing himself to Hemingway. He doesn’t belong in the same conversation as those guys, whether they make mistakes or not. When he also does the great things that they do on a regular basis, then it’s appropriate to use them as examples.

Have we confirmed that Dez ran the correct route?

Ever consider that Romo may have been covering for his young, talented receiver? One that he needs to keep a good relationship with? Did you see the way Dez defended him afterwords? Maybe that was his way of saying thanks.

by Dezstroyer88 on Sep 13, 2011 2:59 PM CDT up reply actions

It was the exact same play they'd run earlier in the game, when Dez ran a stop fade on the sideline.

It was a back shoulder to Dez. It still shouldn’t have been thrown, because the Jets played it a bit differently. This time, however, Dez didn’t stop to come back for the ball.

how long you want to wait for Romo to wake up and stop making stupid mistakes? Should we wait 3 more years then decide while some of these guys are in the prime of their careers, or will be in 3 years from now then have to start over?

Im not saying we will fair better with a rookie, not at first anyway but its being proven that you can win with young QBs now. Something has to change is what Im saying because its obvious Romo is not.

How about the defense that allowed that 4tth quarter TD drive? Or the special teams allowing the blocked field goal, with a man going UNTOUCHED up the middle. Trying to pin this one loss on Romo alone, because of ONE interception, is ridiculous.

I don't see how.

I mean, we win and lose as a team, and no one player is more of a factor in wins and losses than another, right? So every position is equal, and the punt unit excels typically, and did in this game as well, except that one play. The overreaction to this one mistake is ridiculous.

by Baked Potato Soup on Sep 13, 2011 3:43 PM CDT up reply actions

How?

That is one of the plays that was directly responsible for us losing that game.

by Baked Potato Soup on Sep 14, 2011 1:38 AM CDT up reply actions

Sure it is.

But it’s not appropriate to fly off the handle and suggest getting rid of a top 10 NFL QB over a couple of turnovers, especially when we still could have won that game with them. There is more blame to go around than just on Tony Romo, that is what I’m getting at.

You get to decide what level of outrage is appropriate?

That’s pretty arrogant, don’t you think?

We still could have won with the punt block, as well. There is certainly more blame to go around than just on Romo, but he deserves the lion’s share. It’s lame to pretend that this reaction is due solely to this incident with Romo, also. The guy has made similar high profile mistakes in the past, and has not won a game in a long time. If someone like Choice, whose fumble contributed to a loss previously, had fumbled the ball away twice in the same situations that Romo turned the ball over, I suspect the outrage would be just as intense.

by Baked Potato Soup on Sep 14, 2011 7:51 AM CDT up reply actions

And pretty much the rest of the game Romo was outstanding as well.

Punts are like xtra points

Should be perfect all year and should be taken for granted. Why is it acceptable for such a basic play to be missed so blatantly but not for an INT (of what even the best QB have their fair share every year)?

BTW we weren’t among the best in the league, we had one blocked last year too.

You know who played great for the rest of the game really: Romo

by BoyzNick on Sep 14, 2011 12:04 AM CDT up reply actions

Even elite punting units have punts blocked.

Besides, the stats show that we were THE best punting unit in the league last year, with the highest net punt average. Blocked punts here and there don’t refute the stats. You have to take the good with the bad when it comes to a great punt team.

by Baked Potato Soup on Sep 14, 2011 1:43 AM CDT up reply actions

you could also say:
Blocked punts Interceptions late in the game here and there don’t refute the stats. You have to take the good with the bad when it comes to a great punt team Quarterback.

Here’s a theoretical play from 2010: Snap. Tony takes 7 step drop. Tony looks left at Miles, who is doubled, and looks right to where Roy Williams should be…but instead sees Colombo on his back and a Defensive End foaming at the mouth jumping over Marc’s carcass. Tony proceeds to run like hell and look for Witten

Why was Dez out there?

It looked like the same play to me. But why was Dez out there, he was just limping around. You could say Tony should not have thrown it to him, but I’d put it down to the coach having him out there? In the heat of the game it’s hard for the QB to factor in the that the WR is injured. I was upset at the loss but I don’t blame it all on Tony Romo. There were a number of factors that contributed to this loss, he was only one of them. It was just one game and we were playing a very good team.

Seriously, this would be an non-waiver trade for the most part.

It is likely that Choice could be a member of another team, the bidding is being done in the form of draft picks. Example, Dallas could offer a 7th rounder and Choice to St. Louis for a Second rounder to outbid Miami.

Choice was a ST beast -- What happened?

As I recall, his early games produced some highlight reel hits when he was playing coverage on special teams. What happened?! Maybe someone just took him off of kick coverage and it wasn’t his choice.

I always liked the guy and thought he was one of the most complete looking backs we had. When he was given oportunities to start — he never seemed to let us down. His only downfall was that fumble last year, but 1 fumble shouldn’t doom a man…. He rarely fumbles, and as I recall set a record in college for low fumbles.

This is true about Cowboys fans...little too quiet.

I was raised going to 49er, Raiders and Oakand Invader games (USFL) and the stadiums are packed with fans talking smack. When I got to the first game against the Giants in 2009 I could not believe how well behaved the fans were. Not one crazy (except me lol) That culture has to change big time

He was on the field for 43% of the Vikes defensive plays last year

His only game that was really kind of bad was their last game against the Lions, when he got beat for a couple of long balls to N.Burleson (33 yards) and B.Johnson (23 yards). Overall, he is a sold backup and should be good for Dallas for right now.

does the offenses in the NFL look way ahead of the defenses in anyone elses eyes?

i haven’t looked at many stats but i know the record for passing yards was set this week by the 32 QBs with almost 8,000 yards.
besides the Vikings (mc5) & Chiefs everything looked competitive across the board. sure the Seahawks & 49ers game was miserable to watch but there was still some offense.

Until then, the comparison is off. Those guys made mistakes, but were also able to overcome them and get their teams where they needed to be. Thus far, Romo has not done that, and therefore does not get the free pass that they do.

The roster spot needs to come from Buehler.

I don’t understand the need of two kickers. I guess having Buehler this weekend against Ginn and the 49ers make it necessary but is Bailey that bad on kickoffs?

I don’t understand carrying two especially when he doesn’t kick it out of the back of the endzone even if it was by design Bailey could do that. I know with romo’s int it was a non issue but if we had got into fg range that kick wouldn’t have been a given with our kickers

Another Choice tweet signals the end.

He replied “thanks man” to a tweet that said “Not sure if you are hinting that you’re leaving the Boys, but I hope you get a fresh start somewhere!”. Of course that isn’t firm confirmation – but why would you reply that way to that tweet if it wasn’t there wasn’t something to it?

by KeyOfZ on Sep 13, 2011 2:37 PM CDT reply actions

I think Tashard Choice being traded

will be Garrett’s memorable trade like Herschel Walker was for Jimmy……then I just woke up and stopped dreaming….I say if they trade him, see ya….play the best 53 he could not gain a yard the other night and I am willing to bet Tanner would have.

by BWAREofDWARE94 on Sep 13, 2011 2:41 PM CDT reply actions

I was more upset about the block he missed.

And I’m a fan of Choice, but if he isn’t getting yardage and he’s still missing blocks, it might be time for him to move on.

This is just a signing

to get us to the point where we are more healthy in the secondary, not a long term deal. Signing him now does not gaurantee his contract so when Scandrick comes back he can easily be released.

yep, i remember that one

but that wasn’t opening night. it was the opener in the new stadium though. That was 2009. They played the bucs in week 1 on the road. But for what its worth, Romo actually learned his lesson after that game. He only threw 6 more picks the rest of the year to go with 26 TD’s. We’ll see if he reacts the same way this time around.

then I saw it resurface against the Chargers, that throw was awful

just as soon as you think its going good BAM it happens again. Romo just can’t make quick decisions like some of the better QBs in the NFL. Romo’s skillset is very good but mentally he’s barely average

Romo doesn't process info fast enough to make the right decisions in critical situations

i don’t know many ways to write it without offending some people. do you reaqlly believe Brady, Brees or whoever would’ve thrown that pick into double coverage or fumbled the ball at the goal line when there trying to keep the lead?

Well he threw 22 so..

But I know what u mean. And in the same way, I don’t believe Romo is a bad QB because he’s made some bad decisions in his career. I have no doubt that Romo is a SB caliber QB. This doesn’t mean his occasional bad decisions don’t piss me off. They do. But when the talent is there, you roll with the punches and improve upon them and move forward.

Even the great Brady isn't perfect
Brady earned a reputation as one of the NFL’s most clutch performers for his early-career Super Bowl wins. It was in just his second season that he engineered a final-minute drive to beat the heavily-favored St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI.

But since 2007, Brady has flopped when it counted.

Jets coach Rex Ryan looked at that big-game history and asked his team to expose it on Sunday.

“This was the quarterback that couldn’t get touched,” LB Bart Scott told the Boston Herald. “(The media) talk all about how great he’s playing, but what Rex pulled out for us was his last three playoff games – what his record was and what his rating was then. He had a 66 quarterback rating in his last four or five playoff games and you guys didn’t believe that. You guys didn’t look deep enough into the notes.”

Eli being more liked is due to a lot of different reasons..

by thejanusman on Sep 13, 2011 3:52 PM CDT up reply actions

How do you know?

I feel this is absolutely untrue, and the precedent for it is Peyton Manning. Before he finally won, he was saddled with the label of never being able to win a big game, and for making big mistakes in big games. He won the SB, and he became a deity. Romo wins the big game, he will too.

maybe to us fans but a lot of people in the media can’t stand Dallas & never will like them. to many explayers in the media that have grudges against dallas for whatever reason won’t ever reconize Romo the way they do the better QBs in the NFL

IMO because he is a Cowboy

I don’t think a lot of Cowboys get respected as they should.

Look at Emmitt. Rarely does he get mentioned in the argument for best RB ever even though he is the all time leading rusher. he’s got 3 SB rings. why?
“anyone could be good with that line”

but no one ever says Rice was an average reciever because he had 2 HOF QB’s throwing him the ball…one of which is argued as one of the best of all time.
or vice versa….no one says Montana and Young were average QB’s because they had the best WR to ever play the game.

Just seems more apt for the current incarnations of the Seahawks; they are supposed to be the real thing, but instead they are just everyone’s lunch.

So you’re saying you once read about Red and his master plan When playing larger more physical defensive lines the game plan is to wear them down by making them move a lot, lots of pass plays on 1st and 2nd down, stretch runs and screens,,, then run right at them,,, those numbers seem to bear that out

with the now line it should be even more effective

He was hurt (hamstring)…again. The story of his career.

And everyone that was on the roster last week has their salary guaranteed. So it’s pretty much irrelevant. You need a roster spot opened to bring in a player, someone with a guaranteed salary is going to have to be cut to make room.
