Don't Overlook The Bright Spots
In the midst of all the Romo-centric dialogue going on, there were some bright spots that we can all rally around as well as some questions whose answers may have started to form after the Jets game;
The Defense
The entire unit had a cloud of uncertainty surrounding it what with the new DC and abbreviated offseason. No one was quite sure what to expect on that side of the ball. Predictions from the pundits all seemed to say that Dallas would not only lose, but that the Jets were going to hang a big number on Dallas. The fact is, the defense was considered our Achilles heel for the season.
Well, all they did was go out there and play the bulk of the game with only one of their top three cornerbacks and consistently baffle the Jets offense with a myriad of pressure packages and coverage schemes. I particularly liked how we controlled the vaunted Jets running game. Now, it helped that they were behind most of the game, but I liked how the DE's were crashing down and the backside pursuit was excellent. There was some confusion in the back seven at times when Jenkins was out of the game but find me a Cowboys fan that thinks the defense underperformed to expectations and I'll show you someone who needs medication...strong medication. It sure looked like Rob Ryan knew what he was doing out there.
The O-line
Are you kidding me? This ragtag group of no-names (only one player coming from the draft's first three rounds in the bunch) went out and put on a pretty darned good show against what was supposed to be one of the best and most imaginative defenses in the league. Hats off to Hudson Houck and the revamped Dallas offensive line. I realize it is just one game, but you have to like what we saw from this unit and what it suggests for the future.
In several cases, the line got great help from Witten and Felix. Those two will continue to need to protect the edge and deliver hard blows to middle blitzers if we want to see continued support for the downfield passing game.
The Play-calling
I've been dubious on the topic of Jason Garrett's ability to call a game, make adjustments and not be predictable. Well, I'll start off by saying that I'm one-sixteenth wrong about him because Garrett's play-calling against Rex Ryan was nothing short of masterful. Time and time again, the offense knew exactly which matchups to exploit, which alignments to be in and which personnel groupings afforded them the best chance for success. Garrett kept them guessing, mixed the running game in nicely and was just aggressive enough to beat a team many thought we could not move the ball on, much less score as well as we did.
I've also lamented the lack of a downfield passing game and, to my surprise, Garrett was taking advantage of the Jets' aggressiveness by going downfield early and often to stifle their attack.
Only THREE teams have scored 24 or more points against he Jets in their last 16 home games. 3 out of 16! Dallas is in that elite group. Cool.
The Kicker
Welcome to the NFL, Dan Bailey. Again, nobody wants to get caught up in a body of work that has fewer kicks than a hand has fingers, but you had to like what you saw out of Mister Bailey. He was poised and made the kicks he was supposed to make. At least THAT part of our special teams delivered the goods!
Coaching
Despite some early misfires by the rookie RT, Tyron Smith, Dallas didn't do a ton of stupid things like drawing penalties and missing tackles or assignments. In fact, the tackling was solid. The flags were the ones you would expect from a team with 6-7 players in the game who've not had a ton of experience. Clearly there is work to do in terms of getting the play to Romo and getting Romo to the line with more than 6 seconds on the play clock, but keep in mind it is an O-line full of newbies. On defense, you have to love the imagination and lack of predictability for a team that had new starters and subs. How cool is it that Rob Ryan will play the entire roster. That just adds to the fun. Again, couching this as 1/16th of a body of work, it appears Garrett's attention to detail and focus has paid early dividends and I know I speak for all of you when I say I hope this trend continues throughout the season.

I thought it was heroic that he got out there and played

Audacious of him, I'd say, whoever it be
Bright spots must be ‘cuz he’s dazed and confused from the incessant shots to the head. And heart. He’s seein’ things, delusional, there ain’t no bright spots in this lot. Ineptly lead on-field and off. Suspect playcalling from the sidelines, misbalanced run/pass mix, questionable quarterbacking decisions-wise, tendancies to run off half-cocked, firing wildly like a retard with a gun, shooting himself in the foot to the point it’s time to take the toy away and give the ball to the next kid.

I agree
There was a lot to like.
The fact is that this team outplayed one of the top teams in the AFC. After a 6-10 meltdown, that looks like a huge step in the right direction.
"Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"
Absolutely
I was actually shocked how well Rob had the D playing, undermanned & after what I saw from them in preseason. Looks like maybe the ol Silver Fox was holding a lot back to spring on rexster.
I am really looking forward to seeing how our coaches bring it all together this year.

After the INT, they gave up all of 2 yards in 3 plays and forced Folk to make a long kick to put them in front. Not sure you could ask for much more.

I am just saying
for how much this guy is talked about, the high regard people put him in, his special team units have not been that good
I love Joe D as a man, the guy is amazing as a person, warrior type dude, but he gets a clean slate this year after awful ST play last year, and we have a botched assignment lead to a blocked punt in game 1
we were good on kick coverage the other night, the kicker issue really didn’t come into play, but Buehler wasn’t getting kicks deep, I asked someone earlier who knows their stuff about that, and he said there wasn’t a design for the kick to go to the 5 either
I am just hoping our special teams play doesn’t revert back to last year

NOW THIS I AGREE WITH
What a waste that AOA pick was.
Talk about a guy that had zero wiggle.
I wonder if OCC or kindablue could look at the league’s best returners and match it up with their Combine results. Maybe there are some commonalities in judging ability like that.
How does a team find the next Dante Hall or Devin Hester without landing a Skyler Green?
"Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"
I would be willing to do it Blings...
though I would like a few more names other than Hester….
Here’s a theoretical play from 2010: Snap. Tony takes 7 step drop. Tony looks left at Miles, who is doubled, and looks right to where Roy Williams should be…but instead sees Colombo on his back and a Defensive End foaming at the mouth jumping over Marc’s carcass. Tony proceeds to run like hell and look for Witten

what are the ground rules for this little excercise?(this is going to be fun)
here is what I am thinking
to be eligible a player must have say min of 30 returns and an avg per return of greater than 25 yards….think that would work?

Is 30 enough?
Can we pluck some names out and use them?
Josh Cribbs?

Josh Cribbs
2010- 40 returns for 814 yards( 20.5 ypr)
2009- 56 returns for 1542 yards(27.5 ypr)
as for if 30 is enough? gives you roughly 20 players to sort through per year……add in the average qualifier that gives us 18 players over the past two years….think I should do this as a Fanpost?

How do you test for vision?
Maybe that is the element that all good returners have?
Or is that they can “feel” the crease developing.
Need to include their APC as a returner in college, wouldn’t you think?
"Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"
Is it?
There must be something to it. There must, at the very least, be some sort of measurable that stands out for the best returners.

Actually, Bruce Read was Wade's original Special Teams Coordinator when he got hired here
How’d that work out? How soon we forget how bad Read and his units were.
Joe D was a major improvement.
One punt block and all of a sudden he sucks as an assistant?
I’m sorry, but I believe that our Special Teams have gotten better after hiring Joe D.
As compared to how greatly our Special Teams has improved since he was hired.

Also, if there's any time we're going to look shaky, it's in the first week or two
Joe D had to put his special teams together on the fly this week after final cutdown last Saturday.

Check out this quote from Victor Butler on Coach Decamillis
…in response to the blocked punt vrs Jets
Joe D did a excellent job of showing us that exact look all week. We’ve been blocking that look all week. And what it came down to was communication. I mean guys out there, not focusing.
Sounds like Coach did his part but the players screwed up; and that’s coming from a guy that ought to know.
This is usually the reason for gaffs in the game: not lack of coaching, but lack of execution by the players.
"....the Cowboy way...." (Head Coach, Jason Garrett)
Probably true
…but well-coached teams seldom have lapses in execution.
Why is that?
"Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"
a blocked punt is seldom, so we are still a well coached team
"....the Cowboy way...." (Head Coach, Jason Garrett)
Good comments Blings
it stinks that we lost this game. The team played well for 3.5 quarters, then 3 big mistakes cost the game. But you’re not leading halfway through the 4th quarter against the Jets unless you’ve done a whole lot of things right.
the OL was decent enough. At least now we can look at them and know that they should be improving because they’re young.
The D was stout. Yeah, there were some issues when we had our 4th and 5th corner out there with the starters, but outside of that, no complaints.
we didn’t miss any FG or PATs (when was the last time that happened?)
Sean lee was a stud. His play gives me hope the Bruce Carter will be the same.
way more positives coming out of this game than negatives. For a season opening loss, I’ll take this any day over the redskins debacle a year ago.
Great point about the kicking
…but I’m not sure about the last part. It’s eaier to bench Alex Barron than it is to fix Romistakes.
"Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"
that's true
its just that the opener last year was so much more than Alex Barron. There was the lack of offense carried over from pre-season. There was the Choice debacle. There was at least one missed FG if I’m remembering right. That loss made me sick. This one hurt, but I left feeling much better than last year.

This’s a first, your stringing those 4 words together (“you’re right. I aquiesce.”), in that particular sequence, hereabouts. Acknowledging another’s being right and simply throwing in the towel, regardless of the sense of your using the word “acquiesce”.
I maintain it may be a four forerunner of impending Doom. I see the trinity of rights lacking only one step removed from having you going in circles, circulus in probando being the final fours horseman. Simply due to your being evermore misguided, not realizing that while 3 lefts make a right, 3 rights make a left, not a right. And one more brings us full circle.

Garrett's playcalling was good, until......
we got to the 3 yard line. Garrett nutted up. That sequence of plays just looked discombobulated from the start.
Jerry is the end all in Dallas.
our redzone play calling has been somewhat suspect imo
for a while now..
If you get down inside the 5 and you'd better be able to run the ball
In fact, if you get down into the Red Zone, you’d better be able to run the ball.
There’s a lot less room for DB’s to have to roam back there and it favors the defense in those compressed spaces. I Romo throws that ball away, or simply puts a second hand on the ball, we’re taking a chip shot and making the Jets offense (which had not been able to get into a rhythm) one dimensional.
This team has no power running game.
"Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"
Failure [feyl-yer] n. : coming away from redzone penetration with anything less than 7 pts
Cry 'Havoc!'
I disagree
Up 6 with 5 minutes to go, a quick TD can almost be a worse outcome (especially against teams with quick-strike passing games) than a string of running plays that takes it down to the 2:20 mark and results in a FG.
Again, situational.
"Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"
I understand game and coaching strategy
My point is a team with an offense that does not score a TD once it’s entered the redzone coupled with that ST point after being a lock, both together, exhibits an indication of failure in its ability to execute. As in being able to execute failure (remember, that’s what practice and learning from mistakes and experience is all about). As in execution failure. As in being able to execute an opponent.
Keep your FG. I’ll take the very same situation you just laid out with the TD and extra point. Who said anything about “quick”. Not I. Same time off the clock, same everything, just more points my way. In many senses. When it’s needed with little time left, especially when a FG won’t garner the W, which team would you prefer being down there near the goal-line? Give me the 100% redzone efficiency squad. And if they’re a faster gun, all the better. Draw, pilgrim…
Notice I hadn’t disputed your run-based strategy or point. You jumped into the deep end, dug your grave, got yourself into this mess, now let’s see you wriggle out. Or ya gonna pull a Terry?
Disagree all you want. I’ll not deny you your opportunity to be wrong. Boot Hill’s thataway.
Cry 'Havoc!'
I think the red zone is the run zone
Teams that can run there are able to win games, close out games, etc.
The emphasis on point scoring will swing back, much like the pendulum does in the NFL.
Just a matter of time.
"Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"
Think what you choose, it doesn't make it right.
People think wrong plenty in this world. As you’ve proven yet again in taking up the opportunity to do so.
As I said “Notice I hadn’t disputed your run-based strategy or point. You jumped into the deep end, dug your grave, got yourself into this mess, now let’s see you wriggle out.” And at least you haven’t pull your nemesis’ vanishing act. Yet.
But, failed to answer “When it’s needed with little time left, especially when a FG won’t garner the W, which team would you prefer being down there near the goal-line?” Executes with whichever weapons at 100% efficency or 1 weapon at 100%? Which’ll have higher probability of maintaining that 100%?
Nor have you refuted the “execution” points. Not even come close to refuting the Failure you disagreed with originally, to boot. Hill, that is.
