Air Garrett, A Bang for Romo and an 8 Route for Holley

During the off season there was much talk about "Air Garrett" and the Bang 8 route.

This route was an old school route that Aikman and the 90's Cowboys ran with great success. The bang 8 is a post route run out of every receiver position on the field. The Bang 8 is an inside leverage on the post route that can be run by any receiver, but there was none better than Irvin running for the Boys.

Sunday, Garrett, Romo and Holley resurrected this route for great success. With Holley coming out of the slot he gained inside leverage and the tight ends helped clear the zones down low. This opened the 8 route for Romo to connect with Holley on the route. I think from watching the game that Kitna saw this route opening up, and when Romo came back in and had a couple of drives we saw Romo, Kitna and Wade Wilson looking over the play photos then Romo talking at length with Holley before going out. He connected with Holley a couple of times but when they came out in OT they had the coverage they wanted. The rest is history.

This was a win on many different levels. Romo, Kitna, the coaches, Oline and receivers working as a team. Romo stepping up as a leader and getting Holley to buy in and believe, and just Romo being the himself and all we know he can be. Sunday we saw old school Cowboys, Air Garrett, a bang for Romo and an old school 8 route for Holley lift us to a win.

Edit: As a side note on the 8 route you have a Bang which is inside leverage then also a Flash route which is getting on top of the corner to the outside and separating as you break to the post route. Having played some QB in college I would never take the flash unless the safety was low and I had a fast receiver.
