Cowboys Release T Sam Young

The Cowboys have released Sam Young to make room for Derrick Dockery. The official calculus goes: Montrae Holland was released to make room for Tony Fiametta at fullback, and Young is released to get Dockery on the roster. The Cowboys had an agreement with Dockery yesterday, but could officially sign him until they released Young. Supposedly they're looking at putting Young on the practice squad.

There was a lot of speculation that it was Martin Rucker who was going to be released, but Young makes sense, too. The Cowboys had gone heavy at offensive line for the 53 man roster, this brings them back to what was expected.

So now we are probably looking at the 53 man roster for week one against the New York Jets. Yes, in under seven days, one week, the Cowboys will be playing real football again. Hallelujah!

Also, for those who didn't see it, our old friend Andre Gurode ended up signing with the Ravens.

I guess

that means Parnell will be the swing tackle on game day? Is it a possibility that Arkin can play tackle in order to get the best Olineman active on gameday? I would feel better about Smith sliding to LT if Free was injured and Arkin at RT rather than Parnell at LT.

by jfdebois on Sep 5, 2011 9:40 AM CDT reply actions

I think Smith is the SWING

If he gets hurt, plug Parnell in at RT. If Free gets hurt, they’ll move Smith to LT and plug Parnell at RT.

Free & Smith are the best LTs on the roster but Parnell seems to fit the mold Garrett/Houck have created. theres no mualers & getting to the second level at T seems to be a must have. Parnell is really athletic & the sky is the potential bc the kid is a freak.
i have more concern about Dockery playing then anything else. rule 100204596 of football. dont ever pick up exredskin players in the synder era or from the Patriots during Belicheck time.
he doesn’t let the RKG walk no matter what the position (except you Mr.Brady). Seymour might be the one guy that i would’ve thought twice about but getting a Raider 1st draft pick will get a lot of good players in the NFL & the Patriots didn’t have to overpay him.

by nevagiveup on Sep 5, 2011 9:44 AM CDT reply actions

this is good thinking

It looks like it’ll be Butler and Albright. Perhaps Sean Lee will play on one or two of the ST squads?

Don’t forget that they made up for this by going heavy at TE—the same ST body types.

by rabblerousr on Sep 5, 2011 9:46 AM CDT up reply actions

Perhaps Sean Lee will play on one or two of the ST squads?

considering Lee knocked himself out playing special teams last year I’m not crazy about that idea. I wish Dallas would cut Brooking, put Lee in the starting lineup, and have a young guy that could play special teams as Lee’s backup.

You know what Kenny Powers says? Fundamentals are the crutch of the talentless.

EXACTLY

Sean Lee is not made for STs his tenacity running down the field full speed and his history in injuries will only get him hurt

I’d rather have 3 guys rotating at ILB then to force Bradie James and Sean Lee to play every, single down for the whole season.

i’m not a fan of having a broke down Brooking on the roster even if he’s a vet. more speed is needed at that position if they expect to go anywhere this season. Brooking is warrior but the game passed him 2 years ago. i would rather see Lemon over Brooking on the gameday roster.

by DCNation73 on Sep 5, 2011 12:32 PM CDT up reply actions

why

do any of them have to play ST’s? My guess is Albright if any.

by jfdebois on Sep 5, 2011 9:46 AM CDT up reply actions

special teams requires several players in the 240-260 lb body type mold

faster than OL/ DL and bigger than DB/ WR. The two “wedge” guys on kickoff returns, for example.

Those positions are populated by LB/ TE body types.

by rabblerousr on Sep 5, 2011 10:13 AM CDT up reply actions

Just a thought....

Since we are going younger/faster on the Oline. How about an Arkin/Nagy wedge?

this is Brooking's last year

I think they want to let him “finish” the season like a man playing some downs here and there and teach the young ones. Carter will get some tutelage from him….

by J-Witt Dawg on Sep 5, 2011 10:35 AM CDT up reply actions

I think I'll wait to see him practice or even play for us...

before I’ll start comparing him to Barbie Carpenter.

He’ll have had almost 4 months of working with Mike Woicek and his crew before he even steps on the field for us. He’ll be playing in Rob Ryan’s “in your face” defense instead of Butch Davis’ read and chase defense.

There are too many major changes just to say he’s going to be Barbie 2.0 based off of some college film. College film that has also had him lay on some nice hits BTW.

by lonewolfz28 on Sep 5, 2011 1:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Carter is faster, and more athletically talented

My concern is he won’t even get on the field this year. He had the ACL surgery in December, that is kind of pushing it for a guy who will be playing in 34 defense for the 1st time ever.

I hope you are wrong on Carter, but I see the reason to worry. I’ll just put it off until there’s actual proof.

James is like Newman

if we can’t find a ILB to take his job then were forced to keep him or sign a better FA. right now it looks like the oldest ILB in NFL history is about to start for the Dallas Cowboys & you want to run James off lol.
James’s value on this defense is doesn’t get the credit it deserves. people want Newman gone but the fact is when healthy he is still by far our best CB.
Carter is a huge gamble to take in the second round at a poistion you need help at how. theres 4th rd or later rookies starting at a LB position this season & we chose to gamble on kid that would’ve graded out better pre injury. i hope Carter recovers & Lee can stay healthy bc Jerry/Garrett. Ryan are banking on it. they also can’t afford for Jenkins or Spencer to bust unless they find a gem somehow (v.butler. albright, scandrick, mccann, m.butler!)

This makes perfect sense

I felt that Young was the 53rd player and, to me, was the biggest syrprise in terms of who stuck on the roster.

And: don’t sleep on Pernell. He’s better than Young right now, and has WAAAAYY more upside.

by rabblerousr on Sep 5, 2011 9:44 AM CDT reply actions

Upside

isnt the same thing as capable backup right now. I agree he is better than Young and he has big upside but I have no comfort in Parnell if he has to play this year.

Did you really feel any more comfortable

with Young??

I don’t think we are done adding to OL yet, probably will see some more movement after week 1 and guaranteed salaries go away.

Still, for all intents and purposes they both held that same “Backup developmental OL” roster spot, and in this case if we only keep one you take the guy that has the more upside.

Yup

And it’s not like the Rams have an Austin and Dez pushing him into the background.

Mike Sims-Walker has been battling a groin injury all camp and learning a new system since coming over from the Jags. Brandon Gibson is battling toe issues and really hasn’t done much since getting drafted by the Eagles in Round 6 in 2009.

Then you have Amendola and host of no names.

One thing that does get me thinking though…guess who their new OC is? Yup, the same guy that gutted the Broncos before getting canned…Josh McDaniels. He’s got a certain type of player he wants. Plus, he’ll dump any player that doesn’t agree 100% with what he wants to do.

Bowen, Ratliff, Hatcher would look pretty decent starting this season

Spears was surprised he got that money lol

hes a very good run stopper but he will never lay a finger on a QB….

we paid him too much, we shouldv done some incentive thing and say “Hey Marcus, how about this. Every sack you get we pay you one million dollars?”

its a win-win, he has motivation to rush the QB and get his paper and we win by not paying him anything

Does it?

Our defense was pretty horrendous last year and if you don’t count the crappy games the eagles played with their 2nd and 3rd stringers he may have only had 3 interceptions and a dozen pass deflections for the year.

He doesn’t make us better if we aren’t willing to take a chance on other guys playing a role. If hes hurt let him rest, lot of times he’s the one that wants to play through the pain.

I guess

Getting burned by Santonio Holmes on 3rd and 17 in 2008 made us better?
Not timing his jump and letting Brandon Marshall catch a 51 yard touchdown pass in 2009 made us better?
Letting Santana Moss own him for like six straight games?
Not ever showing awareness and looking for the ball while its in the air?
He’s is was a good corner when he was younger and healthy. He’s neither now, and is just taking up space on the roster.

by Final Frame on Sep 5, 2011 11:44 AM CDT up reply actions

well theres zero excuse for him not to make some catches this season

if Bennett cant be used as a big monster in the red zone then this kid has no reason even being in the NFL. Phillips can block more & free Bennett up. no one should be able to cover Bennett if he can just get ot the right spot & catch this ball.
it would be sick to have Dez, Witten, Phillips, Felix & hopefully Bennett in the red zone.

Newman is still better than the majority of CB's in the league

If Jenkins hadn’t melted down last season, maybe you would’ve gotten your wish to see Newman cut, but you think DAL has talent enough in the secondary to let Newman walk?

BTW, 2009 he made the ProBowl, and last season he played every game in a meaningless season with injury, and still managed 5 INT’s and 50+ tkls.

So sick of the Newman bashing from supposed fans.

Derrick Dockery ? WTF? Terrible move!

by APerfectStar on Sep 6, 2011 7:01 PM CDT up reply actions

As far as going thin at certain positions, it's a huge gamble, but if someone gets injured they have a week to go get a replacement.

Just make it through that game, then call up a guy from the practice squad.

Much more of a concern to me is that in a couple of years we may look back at Carter and Murray as a couple of wasted early picks this year.
Murray’s big gain on the screen pass was more due to a great block by the WR than anything he did. Is he going to return kicks this year? Contribute somehow? They kept Choice anyways, I hope this kid shows something, but he seems like just a straight-ahead runner to me.

And Carter, why?
Add this to the ’09 debacle, and the amazing stupidity of the RW trade, and you see why this roster is so thin. GM Jerry has just thrown picks away.

ILB is a very physically demanding position

When you have to get off the block of a guard 60lbs heavier than you and stand in front of 260lb Brandon Jacobs as he’s running at full steam – that requires something far different than mere “tackling technique”.

That requires heart, physicality, and a willingness to fight, get hurt, and do it again 30 seconds later.

When I see a guy like Bruce Carter go for shoe-lace tackles, wiff on guys, and let TEs run over him – I get very very afraid about playing ILB in the NFL. To say nothing of his knee injury.

This guy has a lot to prove to me.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are your Sugar Bowl champions... and for the 7th year in a row Michigan still sucks.

To me labeling someone with the name of a player

who was a draft before he even sets foot on the field in a uniform is calling him a bust. Besides, even if he doesn’t make it as an ILB with his speed and athleticism he could very well be moved to OLB. He should be given as much time to prove himself as as Barbie did. I'm down on the pick because it was so high for a hurt player-but he could be a good

player as a nickel LB.
Exactly where you need a ‘finesse’ player for.

And that’s an important position, that LB who can come in on 3rd down and cover-we’ve missed it ever since Burnett left.

But it is more of a role guy. Maybe Carter is a starter in 3 years, but for now, it’s a wasted year, except maybe some snaps on 3rd down and ST the last few games.

Not much for a 3rd rounder.
But next year, maybe he’ll be a player. It’s just that JJ keeps taking these flyers too often, and too early.

Maybin...

Nevagiveup…I was suggesting Maybin as a “cheap” addition for versatility and back up and/or rush situations. Not sure what his complete story is on why he wasn’t able to stick with the Bills or the Jets but with Rob Ryan’s philosophy of moving players around, he might not be that bad of an option and perhaps finally find a place where he can “fit in”. He’s more of a tweener but certainly scouts saw something in him to draft him that high to begin with.

by cowboyup_atl on Sep 5, 2011 11:41 AM CDT up reply actions

Well as far as Maybin goes

here are his combine #’s

20 Yrd Dash: 2.69
10 Yrd Dash: 1.57
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 22
Vertical Jump: 38
Broad Jump: 10’04"

20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.38
3-Cone Drill: 7.52

to compare, here are Sean Lee’s

Height: 6021
Weight: 236
40 Yrd Dash: 4.71
20 Yrd Dash: 2.63

10 Yrd Dash: 1.61

Vertical Jump: 37 1/2
Broad Jump: 10’00"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.16(proday)

Might be a good compliment for Lee, but would have to put some weight back on(currently listed at 228lbs)

228? Ouch

You have to be north of 250 to survive as an ILB in a 3-4.

all our ILBs’ are < 250…..

Here’s a theoretical play from 2010: Snap. Tony takes 7 step drop. Tony looks left at Miles, who is doubled, and looks right to where Roy Williams should be…but instead sees Colombo on his back and a Defensive End foaming at the mouth jumping over Marc’s carcass. Tony proceeds to run like hell and look for Witten

As a player that needs to be inspired in order to produce. Its not a terrible thing and good players can come of it but they have to be put in the right organization. I don’t think the Bills were it, I have no clue what happened to the Jets.

I live in Bambi central...upstate NY/Vermont.

The results were the same in NC and AZ. “Bambi is cute and shouldn’t be shot”. Even in Wichita Falls, TX the reception to talking about shooting Bambi type creatures received a lukewarm or worse response.

Even when I tell them my sister bow hunts, it’s still the same. Bambi shouldn’t be bothered…even when he runs out in front of cars and causes accidents.

Easier to find a better subject to talk about with prospective women than Bambi hunting or getting mauled.

I just don’t talk about it with women I’m trying to make moves on. There are other much more enjoyable topics to discuss than killing animals for food or getting mauled while doing it.

Now, once the initial courtship phase is over, then it usually gets discussed. Usually along the lines of “yes, those are real weapons” and “yes, I will use them to put meat in the freezer”. Then the fight starts…LOL

then come back and compare that to Bennett…….that playoff game vs the eagles he was amazing and he was going to kick Bennett out last year but tore his acl during that preseason game

by J-Witt Dawg on Sep 5, 2011 12:00 PM CDT up reply actions

There really is no comparrison, Bennett is way more talented

A couple scouts noted last year in camp, as good as phillips had been Bennett was visably better on the field

by Musiccitynorm on Sep 5, 2011 1:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Again

You can have all the talent in the world and never make use of it. He doesn’t seem to have a competitors spirit.

by Final Frame on Sep 5, 2011 1:24 PM CDT up reply actions

I challange you

to go back and watch this pre season and Bennett blocking. He is way better than Witten, much less Phillips, Someone posted run blocking TE’s are all over the college ranks just go draft one,, yea and it seems a lot of teams are missing just that,

As far as catching the ball he needs to mature a lot. With the new culture I’m going to guess he will, accountibility has a lot to do with maturity growth IMHO

by Musiccitynorm on Sep 5, 2011 1:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Still a believer?

Your numbers are dwindling.

Bennett is and always will be just a good blocking TE, not a worthless commodity, but he doesn’t live up to his talent when catching the ball. Phillips is way better at getting the contested passes.

As Rucker learns lo block better, look for him to fill out the 3rd TE spot, and Bennett will be let go next season. Which I think is what he wants. He knows he’ll never be #1 with Witten here, and I think he wants out.

Derrick Dockery ? WTF? Terrible move!

by APerfectStar on Sep 6, 2011 7:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Nothing yet, but

If Phillips stays healthy and plays the way he’s shown in preseason then he’ll be able to show more than Marty B. The problem with Bennett isn’t talent, it’s on field performance. I think a lot of us have tired of him making one big catch followed by 3 or 4 drops. Just seems like a very low level of efficiency when watching him play for someone with that much physical ability.

by Evildallas on Sep 5, 2011 12:00 PM CDT up reply actions

well he should have a lot more opportunities to catch passes this season with Phillips back

Bennetts big problem is he isn’t always in the right place & his hands aren’t very consistent. sure he can do some things if he was the #1 but theres a reason he hasn’t passed Witten & is battling with Phillips for #2 reps.
basically Bennett is athleticly gifted as they come but his IQ doesn’t meet match up with the rest of him. football isn’t just looks in real life, some of these players only care about a check & only do enough to get by. eventually these kids pick it up or they dont but thats the 3 year window hear about on a kid that doesn’t produce from the start.
Lets hope he understands the playbook & where or what Romo wants him to do against certain situations (like Witten does well).

Nagy and the “rookie wall” does concern me with a lack of pre season activities, The first year in a pro’s life is used to prepare the body and no rookies really got to do this. Arkin may get to start for Nagy hits that wall say week 10

I like the shape of this roster

I think they cut the right guys and kept the right guys. The only change I would have made would be to keep an extra ILB instead of a kicker.

I know losing Josh Thomas hurts, but I think his roster spot was a victim of the Matellus Bennett injury. The fact is, Dallas runs its offense our of base 2-TE formations. If we only have 2 active TEs and one of them goes out of the game with a concussion, this offense can’t function. They had to add Martin Rucker in order to keep 3 active TEs.

But when you go extra at a position you have to lose something at another. Can’t cut OL, WR, S, D-Line, ILB, or OLB more than they already are. Our 6th CB just got squeezed and with Newman playing only god-knows how many games this year, they needed more veteran players to hold down that slot CB slot in Ball and McCann.

Completely disagree about D-line

We’ve got a 32 year old and Marcus Spears starting.

We definitely need to get younger and better at DE. Josh Brent, Sean Lissimore, Gaethers – these are guys we need to step up.

Josh Thomas’ ceiling was slot corner, the three D-linemen above’s ceilings are starters. We need someone to replace Kenyan Coleman next year. Spears shortly thereafter. And what of Ratliff if he actually struggles at NT again this year?

the good 3-4 defenses have really good DEs now.

getting pressure from the DE position is priceless when they can play the run also. a huge monster thats athletic at NT & 2 DEs that can make plays running or passing down.
with most teams passing the majority of the time pass rushers are the ones that people pay top dollar for. Bowen was worth every nickle he got in Washington & its sad Jerry was more worried about signing Nnamdi then locking up other players. Spears, Hatcher & Coleman were knee jerk signing but hopefully 1 out of them stand out. Bowen, Ratliff, Hatcher or Bowen , Brent Ratliff would look a lot better then Spears, Ratliff, Coleman

He probably could, but you'd still be paying him for nothing and since this is likely his last year, if

you’re thinking that you might as well cut him and save the money.

Wish you were here

I'm torn

To be honest I’d put him on the PUP to free up the spot. Guy has been hurt for 4 years in one form or another. So I think I’d give him as long as he requires since we’ll end up paying his salary anyway. Question really is are they telling the public everything or is there more going on but Newman wants to play injured anyway.

He'll be back by game 2 or 3

play hurt through the whole season, suck it up, and people will defend him because “oh, he played injured”

Just like last year, just like every year.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are your Sugar Bowl champions... and for the 7th year in a row Michigan still sucks.

what is this "Loss" you are talking about?

I don’t see one…..

Am I the most optimistic Cowboys fan in the World? Yes, due to an "unfortunate accident" to the previous holder of the title.

I'm sure they needed a bulldozer to uncement his feet from the ground.
