Profootballtalk reports the Cowboys are closing in on a five-year, $40 million extension with NT Jay Ratliff.
The deal would be a five-year extension of the two years left on his current deal at $3.75 million in 2011 and $4.875 million in 2012. The new money includes $18 million in guarantees for the three-time Pro Bowler. Ratliff is entering his age-30 season, so it's an extreme longshot that he'll see all five years of that extension. Todd Archer just tweeted that its done.

Too long for a 30 year old guy. This is Jerry taking care of one of his players – which is why they like playing for him, and why he drives fans nuts. Too much, too long for an older player.

this is why I dont like Jerry

this is Newman all over again, why extend a 30 year old player for that MUCH money and that LONG

insane

look I LOVE Ratliff, we all do, but come on man, everyone said Nnamdi was falling off at 30 and he is a CB, this is a NT who is undersized and beat up every single play, and we want to extend him for 5 years?

stupid

This is why we need a GM

Jerry the owner gives contracts based on past play and not future performance. In a sense he is rewarding Jay for his great play and outplaying his contract………. That’s a nice thing to do, but about this time A GM should be there to smack him with a phone book and yell YOU DONT GIVE PLAYERS OVER 30, 5 YEAR CONTRACTS WITH 18 MIL GUARANTEED. ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY ARE UNDER CONTRACT ALREADY FOR 2 YEARS AND ARE NOT HOLDING OUT.

A long deal

that will prob not meet it’s end…plus we keep ratlif for under 5 mil per year…I’m okay with this, it could have been a LOT worse.

I like it.

Unlike most of the people who have been paid big on this team, the last time Ratliff got paid he caught on fire and has been amazing ever since. He may be smaller for a NT and older at 30, I fully believe he will play out this contract and we still see this as a great deal for the Cowboys. I think if anyone on this team deserves a big payday, it would be Ratliff.

We have not seen it yet

It maybe a front loaded contract, It could be after the 3rd season he can be cut loose with out a big hit. I think we can get a good 3 season’s out of him before he really starts down hill.

I am worried about this

but want to see the details before I overreact. I know Jerry signs a lot of dumb contracts but the flip side of that coin is players know they will be rewarded for playing well.

frowns..... JERRY..jerry

i like jay , and he earns every bit of his pos and pay, but this contract seems like a continuation of past bad deals. we shall see.

woman !, dont try to understand em, dont try to make them understand you, for they are a breed apart ! lol

Maybe people dont see it!

Rat! Congrats bro… you deserve every penny. If people haven’t noticed it’s not DL men that seem to retire early from injuries these guys are the toughest of the bunch and most play at least until their mid 30’s .. they don’t need the super speed and strength and conditioning are their bread and butter. I think Rat will play out this contract and even play harder. I would like to see Dallas move on a big Nose Tackle in next years draft and move him to DE… that would be my play on this.
