The link goes to Tim McMahon's plan to fix the Cowboys by signing Nicks and drafting Kirkpatrick. I say both unlikely, but whatever.

Anyway, the interesting part was the following quote --

That would eat up a major chunk of the estimated $17 million the Cowboys are expected to have under the salary cap after they take care of housekeeping issues such as cutting Newman.

Does anyone have more information on that particular figure?

From that other fanpost recently (here), a number of folks were convinced the team had $30m to play with.

i haven't heard anything near 30 mill

but i have been hearing around 20 mill and thats before cutting Newman. Who knows. That cap stuff gets confusing very fast.

We're here to win football games. The way to do that is to tell him and to get on him at the right times. I do that when you guys (media) don't see and watch.''

What else makes a strong leader?

"You win,'' Romo said. "You're a very good leader once you win.

"That's' what we're going to do.''

I don't think anyone in the public truly knows (or won't publicize it)

The cap can be played with so many ways, as we all know. We got well under the cap in training camp last year and the money not used can be rolled over into next year for the first two (I think) years of the CBA. I wouldn’t be surprised if the cap goes up bc it was like 140 mil in 2009, uncapped in 2010, then went DOWN to 120 with the 3 mil exemption.

yeah Newman is likely to be cut

we will probably sign a big name free agent, then a couple of smaller ones.

I’m sure Lee will find us a way to get Mario Williams, Carl Nicks and Brent Grimes.

Don't know, but let's hope Stephen Jones isn't given to his dad's knack for

hyperbole (or for overestimating the talent on the team). He has been quoted as saying the Cowboys have enough money under the cap to go get what they need.

by Fernie67 on Jan 16, 2012 9:56 AM CST reply actions

Why do you think this is unlikely?

Nicks can be signed there is enough room and as for drafting I would go with BPA at the position of need. If it’s Dre, Decastro,Ingram, or Upshaw all would be upgrades.

Safety isn’t a significant need and could be OK with what we have but pass rush is and there are solid pass rushers in the first and second rounds

by CowboyWay on Jan 16, 2012 10:10 AM CST via mobile reply actions

I meant that those two events would be quite unlikely

Carl Nicks will be too expensive, and Kirkpatrick will likely be picked before 14.

But yes, any of those guys you mention can make a huge difference to this team.

Why "only"?

In mid-November, the Cowboys were $18.2 million under the cap, the 8th highest total in the league. Yes, that’s right. The Cowboys are rolling more money into 2012 than most other teams.

But at the end of the day, those numbers are all just eye-candy: the Cowboys achieved that number by restructuring a number of contracts on their roster. And they can do it again this year if they choose to (just like any other NFL team).

Scandrick’s extension for example was built with just that in mind. His base salary in 2012 is $7.1 million, but only $2.0 million in 2013. The Cowboys could easily restructure Scandrick’s contract and open up an extra ca. $5.4 million room against the 2012 cap. Further restructuring of two other recent contracts (Free: $6 million in 2012, Ratliff: $5 million in 2012) could add another ca. $5-6 million.

As Stephen Jones said,

“We can move aggressively to improve our football team,” Jones said. “We can draft and we don’t have to cut good players for that to happen. And as long as we can do all that, then it’s a non-issue….We’ve got all the running room to improve our football team, whether that means going after a high-powered free agent if that’s what we want to do. We can draft, we can move up in the draft, we can do all the things we want to do. And that’s what’s important at the end of the day.”

Good Stuff OCC

Stephen does a great job at crunching numbers and would surprise me at all if we landed Nick and picked up a solid veteran for depth by cutting Newman.

We will probably get a better idea on cap space in early March

Only said only because the most common number I read on the other post was 30. Just trying to figure out what’s what.

I can offer that I've found that anything that DMN or ESPN offers with regard to what

they deem as fact as it pertains to anything to do with the salary cap should be taken with a grain (no maybe a ton) of salt. In fact ignore it.

They each had quite a bit to say about a year ago this time….

Things like Roy Williams won’t be cut because it would be a 13+M cap hit to do so…etc…

Dead money stuff as well. I emailed each and every one of them and politely asked how they could possibly calculate cap hits and dead money with no CBA in place. Not a hint of a response.

Bottom line: because these morons with a Journalism degree have access to the locker room doesn’t mean they understand complicated things like an NFL salary cap.

Dallas can sign any player out there if that’s the route they choose to go to improve.
