Stupid

This is going to hurt his stock badly, may take him off of some boards all together, and being this close to the draft he won’t have time to rehab his image.

I really don't know if it will drop him that far

but he really might come into play at 14 now and thats where it gets interesting

well, have you ever been in the wrong situation at the wrong time?

I think some facts and investigation is in order before we get too excited about him not being a “RKG”

Yeah I have no issue taking him at 14. He was atop my wish list an hour ago, so..

still is for now.

Just wondering if this pulls him off boards, or if he’ll do a Jenkins and withdraw.

Assuming this is an isolated incident, I'd be all for him.

As far as withdrawing, I think he has until tomorrow if he hasn’t hired an agent.

It doesn't matter if their are worse things

In context of the NFL weed is a major offense, you can be suspended for multiple games.

I understand that, but my point for the whole thing was that it deserved some investigation.

If it is an isolated instance with him and Dallas feels like it’s something that won’t be a problem, then take him and be ecstatic that he fell. Several folks in here have made sweeping blanket accusations without him being given a chance for all facts and the law to play out.

by WestTxHornFan on Jan 18, 2012 8:54 AM CST up reply actions

I have been in plenty of situations in my life and the cops never had to be called.

The Shore Patrol was called one time when I was 19.

I completely disagree with this whole “he’s just a kid let him live his life” or “it’s just one arrest” or “he’s never actually been arrested” BS. And this applies to Dez too.

It is a pattern of behavior when the cops are called on you multiple times, regardless of if you are arrested or not.

These guys don’t get a pass just because they are your favorite millionaire athlete, or potential favorite millionaire athlete.

Chia you know I like you a lot, but

When we want to go down this road, you can roll the dice and end up with another Pacman. Or you can stick to the draft philosophy that gives us Sean Lee, Murray, Bailey, Smith along with guys like Austin, Ware, Witten, Romo, Rat and I would put Bryant in there also. I would also point to Carter, Nagy, Arkin, Lissi, Josh Brent and many others.

I would rather hedge my bets than roll the dice. You yourself led the bandwagon last year that Murray was a RKG and would be a star. I will go with the chior boys you pick, not the potential problems.

You have to play this game like somebody just hit your mother with a two-by-four. Dan Birdwell. Oakland Raiders

And before everyone gets all WKG

Just remember exactly what constitutes a “RKG”, as articulated in this post by occ.

People make mistakes, especially young college people. I don’t see anything in there that precludes him, or J Jenkins for that matter from being drafted, as long as they show responsibility for their mistakes and prove that they are willing to put in the work to be great at their craft.

It's fairly common knowledge that Ray Lewis had something to do with the murder, and likely started the confrontation that lead to murder. He may have even pulled the trigger. Who knows.

He was charged with murder, but the charge was dropped in exchange for a guilty plea to obstruction of justice for making false and/or misleading statements to police, and he had to testify against his co-defendants. He rolled on someone to get out of it.
Convictions have nothing to do with it

Yep, really.

This isn’t the first kid to make a mistake like this, and it won’t be the last. And this is far from an isolated incident with a singular player. From last years combine:

Based on information obtained from NFL team executives, agents, scouts and trainers, just under one-third of the 327 players who attended this year’s NFL pre-draft scouting camp, or combine, had some incident involving marijuana turn up in interviews or background checks—which NFL teams collect and share before and during the event. This number represents a 30% increase from the season before. The NFL and its players union declined to comment on these totals.

This is just one report regarding players entering the combine, who knows what that number extrapolates to at the pro level. This is a chronic problem amongst all levels of sports. To crucify one kid for making a mistake that some 30 percent (on the low end of estimates, and 70 percent on the high end) of current NFL players engage in is hypocritical at best.

I agree it was a very stupid move, however I do not believe that you completely preclude him from your draft board because of it.

by TheCowboyWay on Jan 17, 2012 6:50 PM CST up reply actions

I do.

The old adage works here “if everyone else jumped off a bridge…” When Goodell is handing out 4 game suspensions for it, why risk it? Testing is only going to get stricter.

Its stupid, and childish. I laugh at someone who would rather smoke weed then play a game for millions of dollars. You have to be a grade A idiot.

And with your quote I wonder how many of the 109 players got drafted and how many fell considerably because of it.

People make mistakes, and you are too quick to judge when you do not even have all of the details. Teams will do their due diligence, and if they believe that he simply made a mistake, and has the ability and drive to be successful, he will remain on their boards. His value may drop, which has a lot to do with the threat of a 4 game suspension, but he will still be a high first rounder on most boards.

I no not support nor condone what he did, however he is not the first person or the last to make a mistake. People deserve 2nd chances.

I laugh at laws restricting the use of marijuana.

I no longer engage in using it, but cannot chastise those who choose to, for medicinal or recreational use. I got a lot accomplished while regularly smoking. If not for being tested regularly, I may still smoke. It was harmless, in my opinion. 100x less dangerous than alcohol – something I rarely touch anymore.
The laws are stupid and childish, and a tremendous waste of tax dollars go enforcing them.
That said, I am a little surprised that coaches (from high school on up) don’t relegate someone (another player or assistant) with making sure their star athletes pass these drug tests. I’m not saying it’s right!!! I’m just saying I’m surprised it’s not more common practice given the moral integrity of today’s sports.
Unless they use blood testing (which I doubt due to it’s expense), it is extremely easy to beat. Urinalysis especially. For less than $20 and a couple hours notice, anyone can pee clean.
Look, the fact of the matter is, no one is ever going to be come up with a way to stop people from smoking marijuana. It’s not going to happen.

What? BS!
People make mistakes, especially young college people.

How many times did you get arrested in college? Or have the cops called on you?

Am I really an “old codger” at 46 years old? What is wrong with younger people now days that think it is no big deal when the cops get called, or someone gets arrested?

There are thousands of college players. The Cowboys do not need to draft any of them that have run in’s with the law. You need to change your name, because you are not the Cowboy Way.

In the 17 seasons from 1966-1982, the Cowboys went at least to the conference championship game 14 times. In the 16 seasons from 1996-2011, the Cowboys have won 2 wild card games.

I did not say that it was no big deal

However it is unfortunate that you maintain such a narrow view.
Have you ever been around a college campus? Right or wrong, pot use is rampant.

Do you know the kid personally? Is he a scumbag? A drug dealer?
I do not condone or agree with his pot use, however I leave it to the team to do their due diligence and figure these things out for them selves.

This single event does not, and should not condemn him, and no matter how you or anyone else here feels he will get his chances. And he will be a top pick, perhaps even pick 14.

I actually think pot should be legalized.

And I did not condemn pot use. I condemned causing a big enough problem that the cops get called. “Kids being kids” and “youthful mistakes” do not involve the cops and arrest reports.

Answer my question. How many times were you arrested in college? Or even had the cops called on you?

And I don’t care where Kirkpatrick gets drafted as long as it is not by Dallas.

In the 17 seasons from 1966-1982, the Cowboys went at least to the conference championship game 14 times. In the 16 seasons from 1996-2011, the Cowboys have won 2 wild card games.

by fs65 on Jan 17, 2012 8:13 PM CST up reply actions

Actually your bring up an interesting point

and to answer your question:

Times arrested in college: 0. Cops called on me individually: 0.

Cops called on a party I was attending: countless.

They had just won the championship, he made a bad decision to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and got busted. Stupid, but doesn’t make him a bad person. Like I said, I will let the team do its due diligence.

by TheCowboyWay on Jan 17, 2012 8:24 PM CST up reply actions

I don't agree that he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I didn’t ask how many parties had cops show up. I asked how many times did YOU cause the cops to be called. As you said, you were at the wrong place at the wrong time when the cops were called to the parties you were at. Just being there does not involve getting arrested.

But when you are the person at a party that the cops single out to question and arrest, then that is you being the problem, not being at the wrong place.

Can’t you see that difference?

In the 17 seasons from 1966-1982, the Cowboys went at least to the conference championship game 14 times. In the 16 seasons from 1996-2011, the Cowboys have won 2 wild card games.

if you are at a party and the cops get called, and you smell like pot, yep you are gonna get singled out and probably arrested. Wrong place, wrong time, stupid mistake.

by TheCowboyWay on Jan 17, 2012 8:40 PM CST up reply actions

Let me clue you in:

Some cops (most, in my personal opinion) have tremendous egos.
That said, who are they more likely to arrest – the star athlete, or some Joe Shmoe? (no offense to all the Joe Shmoes on this board, myself included)
Shall I rephrase:
Who is more likely to put their name in the paper after arresting – the star, potential future top 10 pick in April’s draft, or some Joe Shmoe?

People were saying in another thread that this isn't his first bust.
Due to the timing of this arrest and when his court date and senticing will be could have major ramifications. This is not a first offense so he may have to due jail time. Also once he is drafted he falls under the CBA and any conviction of guilt would put him in violation of both the leagues substance abuse and personal conduct polcies so he could be facing suspension also.

was it actually him in possession of the weed or someone he was with. I know news pundits like to do this and will say that he was in possession of the weed when it was really someone he was with that had it and he might not of known. They will do this because they get better ratings if they can pin the story on someone with a big name.

Like I said, this could just be the papers twisting the story a little big or taking it out of context as they love to do to make a better story. We all hate it, but it is what they do.

Dallas doesn't like players with drug issues.
Jerry Jones offered insight into the team’s thinking that summer. Asked why he signed Johnson, Jones explained that the team would take chances with players whose off-field problems didn’t involve drugs.

Dallas had been burned by high-round, high-risk draft picks who had drug problems in college. At some point in the Parcells era, most likely after Quincy Carter’s release, the Cowboys drew the line on knuckleheads with habits. They showed fidelity to this no-drugs principle two years ago, when they left top tight end prospect Aaron Hernandez off their board. (He had drug problems at Florida.)

Wasn't so long ago

that many Cowboy fans crucified Romo for taking a little trip before a playoff game, but here we stand practically applauding, & saying “atta boy!” to a pothead who gets arrested & may have his stock drop to where he is available at the 14th pick. Some ppl never learn. Didn’t Lett get suspended for drugs? What if we draft Dre “drugs b4 football” Kirkpatrick, pass on DeCastro(how many arrests or drugs?) & he gets suspended for doing drugs during a playoff run or the playoffs? What will these same fans, enabling drug use, the selection of someone whose priority isn’t football, & gets arrested, say about Jones as a GM when he selects someone who is so obviously the WKG? We as fans shouldn’t crucify JJ for being a bad GM & then turn around & hope that he drafts a pothead w/ a criminal record whose priority isn’t football. Do ppl make mistakes? Yes they do. Should they get second chances? Of course they should, but somewhere like Cincinnati or Tampa Bay. This draft is supposed to be deep in CBs so why reach for someone w/ so little regard to himself, his family, fans or team? Imagine if we had Kirkpatrick, Dez & Hurd on the team. What would everyone be saying of JJ then?

I disagree. There will be someone at 14 with enough talent to pick that has not been arrested.

In the 17 seasons from 1966-1982, the Cowboys went at least to the conference championship game 14 times. In the 16 seasons from 1996-2011, the Cowboys have won 2 wild card games.

I hope you're right. But I have a feeling that now the ball is in motion...his fate is sealed with a star.

I wouldn’t mind having him on our team, personally. If we feel like we can trade down and still find talent, we should now. Especially if he’s going to fall because of this. I won’t mind that either, now.
I don’t want to speculate too much until after the combine.

We'll just have to wait and see.

The Cowboys are going to do what they are going to do no matter what we say here.

Wrong. RKG is not about passion. It is about character.

I'll take this a step further. I don't care what JG said.

I want players on the Cowboys who are the right kind of character guys.

I have no say in it. JG doesn’t care what I think. But that is what I think.

In the 17 seasons from 1966-1982, the Cowboys went at least to the conference championship game 14 times. In the 16 seasons from 1996-2011, the Cowboys have won 2 wild card games.

Then maybe you shouldn't use the RKG acroynm

Because clearly the definition that the team uses and the moral standard you hold players to isn’t the same. What you think of Kirkpatick is irrelevant, so stop calling him the WKG because he doesn’t fit your standard.

Christ, I wish the whole R/W KG thing was never even started by Cowboys brass and talked about to a fault on this site. The NFL locker room is littered with conflicting personalities that all live their own personal life. To think you’re going to have a locker room full of saints, especially when Kirkpatrick was charged on a minor and misdemeanor(at worst) possession charge, which faces all of a years probation at most in most states. It really isn’t that big of a deal.

I must break you

First, if you read the whole thread you would see that I am not asking for all "saints" on the team.

Second, Roger Goodell disagrees with you that it “isn’t that big of a deal”. Would you still be okay with it when Goodell suspends a Cowboy?

No. If you read the whole thread you will see that I already said that I think that pot should be legalized.

You will also see that I said I have no problem with pot and know a lot of people who smoke. IMO pot is no worse than alcohol. You will also see that my problem is being stupid enough to cause problems and draw attention to yourself from the cops when you have been smoking and/or holding.

If he was in a group that got their attention then he shouldn’t be in that group.

How hard is this to understand? How many of you have been arrested? Not so hard to not get arrested is it? I made plenty of mistakes in my 20’s and never got arrested for them. That’s where I draw the line.

I want the Cowboys to pick BPA without character concerns.

Agree wholeheartedly

but I would add that what we’re also looking for players that won’t be a distraction. If we as fans want the Cowboys to win a SB, how can we expect to do so when drafting players that become a distraction. It’s one thing to be a distraction during the offseason, but to be one during the season & in the locker room is a problem.

T.O. is perfect example of a talented player who was always a distraction & a cancer in the locker room according to some of his former teammates. Look at Randy Moss. Talent oozing out of his pores & always a distraction or malcontent. In the meantime, we have guys like Welker who don’t have half the talent as a T.O. or Randy Moss & they prosper because the do have a passion to win, passion to improve & a passion to make those around you better. Has Welker been arrested or been a distraction to his team? We’re trying to follow the example, to a degree, of the Patriots in surrounding these players with passionate players but not those who are distractions. Dez is right on the fence. He’s a distraction, but so far he or the FO has kept it managed during the season.

We don’t need choirboys as this game is a game of violence & confrontations, but do we really need players who are violent, confrontational & a distraction during the offseason? We absolutely don’t know all the details of his arrest & prior history, if any in UA, but do we really want to use the 14th pick on a player w/ so many unknowns & a clear lack of judgment? I don’t believe we should. Should he be drafted after the 14th? Sure, but not necessarily by the Cowboys. The CB out of South Carolina is moving up the boards as is Chase Minifeld. We have options.

I could even see Coples as an option for Cowboys over DeCastro should he be there in the 14th as it has been suggested that his motor isn’t 100% because he’s trying to avoid being injured like his former teammate LB Bruce Carter. We may even have the option of getting LSU DT Brockers. We have soooo many choices & so many holes to fill. Why obsess or get tunnel vision over a guy whose focus(passion) isn’t football first. IMO, he’s made himself a distraction & a team w/ SB aspirations, can only manage so many problem children before the locker room is broken.

you don’t take him at 14 but if you can get a great deal on him then you take him.

If he is the tenth best player in the draft but you can get him at 25 and get extra draft picks too then it is a great chance.

by Jonathan Stern on Jan 18, 2012 6:04 PM CST up reply actions

@14

or @25 he’s not worth the risk imo. there are better players & greater need elsewhere, but do agree if we can trade down & still get Coples of DeCastro I’d be for it, but would hate to see either of them go elsewhere. I’d rather see the Cowboys pickup Minniefield or the CB out of South Carolina than D.K(nucklehead) Kirkpatrick. Just don’t care for drafting players w/ poor-decision making. I did like him a lot during his bowl game, but have soured on him. Like it was posted elsewhere, the FO removes players w/ drug habits off their draft board entirely. I’d rather see Coples or DeCastro to be honest. Those 2 picks would be a lot safer in that their talent is unquestionable & they don’t have character concerns that we know of.

You're wrong in terms of the RKG for the Dallas Cowboys, so says the Head Coach.

I think his opinion weighs…well, suffice it to say his opinion actually weighs something where your opinion weighs absolutely nothing. Again, this is pertaining 100% to matters of the Dallas Cowboys.

Right back at ya.

All of our opinions weigh absolutely nothing pertaining to matters of the Dallas Cowboys.

In the 17 seasons from 1966-1982, the Cowboys went at least to the conference championship game 14 times. In the 16 seasons from 1996-2011, the Cowboys have won 2 wild card games.

by fs65 on Jan 18, 2012 3:12 PM CST up reply actions

Well, that's not true.

If someone is labeled using the acronym “RKG” while referring to Jason Garrett’s use of the phrase “Right Kind of Guy,” it’s meaning correlates explicitly to Jason Garrett’s definition, usage, and examples of what an “RKG” is. They are spoken from the man’s mouth.
I understand this has not been trademarked or otherwise claimed by Jason Garrett, but c’mon man. You should know what kind of uphill fight you’ve gotten yourself in here. In this case, I kinda agree with the majority.
Why don’t you come up with your own phrase and shrink it to an even better sounding acronym? Like “Other Right Kind of Guy”, or “ORKoG”. That’d be sweet.

How about Real Right Kind of Guy. RRKG.

The kind that matters in the real world. Football is just a game. Life is real.

And I’ll say it again since you failed to read it: All of our opinions weigh absolutely nothing pertaining to matters of the Dallas Cowboys. Not even yours.

Just to clarify

I have nothing against him being caught in possession of what appears to be a single MJ joint, it’s his decision making that I’m questioning.

If he’s making this kind of mistake when he’s about to inmerse himself in interviews, physicals and medical tests with people that want to make him a millionaire, what do you think may happen when he’s in the Offseason and he has a huge bank account to spend?

Someone that’s capable of being this stupid is capable of worse.

If he can kill the combine and show the ability to turn and run at his size

than I would be all for drafting him at #14.

The guy was smoking pot almost two months before the combine and a full 7 months before he would have to be gearing up for a training camp. Let’s see how everything plays out over the next few months before declaring who we will and who will absolutely not draft.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

Man,

All you guys quick to codemn him as if he’s done something horribly wrong. He ddnt even smoke it! So now he’s a pothead? Please. If DeCastro is gone by the time we pick, I say hell yeah we take him. I bet you a whole lot of players in the NFL smoke weed and do other illegal things all the time. They just don’t get caught. Maybe he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. He’s a great talent.

by BrickTop on Jan 18, 2012 2:30 AM CST via mobile reply actions

Still should take him

One charge of pot, which isn’t a huge deal and doesn’t hold a severe penalty (let alone he’ll get his record expunged assuming he goes through the court system properly), doesn’t change who he is as a football player nor is it an example of who he is as a person. If he comes into interviews and the combine and pisses hot or gives any reason to believe he is going to be a problem, then go ahead and pass on him.

Bottom line is he was at a party that got busted for a noise violation. Because he smelt like pot, as he probably was smoking and had a little on him(possession less than 20 grams? I doubt he had anything special on him if they aren’t clarifying and being he’s probably like most college students, he probably had anywhere from a gram’s worth to maybe a half, so 7 grams), which isn’t much at all. He’ll go through the simple court motions, especially in state like Florida, and that will be that.

As someone who actually DID get busted with pot while in college and still was able to finish college AND get into a grad school(not to mention an easy chance to get into the Army with a wavier that I had ready to go if I made that choice), his situation isn’t that uncommon at all. I wasn’t arrested, but it was a very similar situation. For me I was in the dorm when the police were called on the people who lived next to me who happened to be smoking in their room/someone the cops had been watching as a potential dealer. Because I was friends with both the kids, they searched my room as well and came up with about 3.5 grams of pot which I had on me before. All in all, the only thing it cost me was money for the court charges, passing a piss test the day of my trial, and staying clean for a year’s probation, which got reduced to six months due to good behavior. All in all it wasn’t a huge deal.

Bottom line is if he’s there and someone like DeCastro is gone, they should move forward with him.

I must break you

by Zpomero1 on Jan 18, 2012 9:59 AM CST reply actions

I agree. In the real world personal use pot is not a big deal.

I think it should be legalized.

But we are talking about the NFL. Roger Goodell thinks it is a big deal and will suspend players for it. I don’t want Dallas Cowboys players to be suspended. I know lots of players smoke pot but there is nothing the Cowboys FO can do about it because they aren’t getting caught. But when a prospect gets caught, there IS something the FO can do about it: not draft him.

That’s all I’m saying. I’m not condemning him and I’m not looking for all “saints” in the locker room. But when a guy gets caught before he is drafted, the FO has that information about him as a fact, and can make a choice about him.

In the 17 seasons from 1966-1982, the Cowboys went at least to the conference championship game 14 times. In the 16 seasons from 1996-2011, the Cowboys have won 2 wild card games.
