This is my first fanshot/post, so hopefully it comes out right.
I have been clamoring in the comments sections of threads that a pass rusher should be our first draft pick. After last night, I've completely reversed my thinking. Say what you will about confusion, communication problems, and defensive schemes, but after watching last night's game, I'm truly convinced that our DBs just flat out can't play.
Other than an off-tackle run to the left in the 2nd half, where Keith Brooking was trying to communicate with someone to move at the snap (the play was very successful), I didnt see a whole lot of communication problems. I also thought the scheme was sound. Guys were in position to make plays, whether they be tackles or defending passes, and the plays were not made. Terrance Newman was just plain awful, Abe Elam was in position to make big plays in the run game, and completely whiffed (see Bradshaw's TD), and Scandrick was just overmatched all night. Add to that Gerald Sensabaugh taking awful angles, and I am now convinced that this team needs to spend AT LEAST 2 draft choices on DBs, and probably need to sign one or two more in Free Agency. Other than Mike Jenkins, nobody in this secondary is even close to above average, and it's a shame that Scandrick and Sensabaugh were extended. Without major upgrades in the back half of the defense, I see no reason to believe that next year will be any different.
