MHO's First Mock!
Hello BTBers and welcome to my first FanPost. I have been an avid BTB reader for the last year and a half. With the distress of the 2011 season wearing off I thought I might give my humble opinion to the readers here on the blog. I have enjoyed reading all of your opinions through posts and responses over the last few weeks, and on occasion have posted my own.
I just spent the last hour making my first Mock Draft for the BTB fun we are having but thought it would be better served as a Fan Post. The first thing I would like to address is FA. I think JJ and Company will sign Carl Nicks, Michel Griffin, and a solid Center. As well as retain L. Robinson, Freight Train Fiametta, and Almost Anthony (if the price is right). I know what most of you are thinking "No way can JJ make all these signings happen". Well I for one have faith in our Front Office (as long as JG is there).
Now on to the draft. The talk of the town has been about DeCastro and how badly we need to shore up the front of our Offence. While I do agree with this conclusion I just don't think spending a first round pick on a Guard is what Jerry and Jason have in mind (that’s right I am on a first name basis with then...they just don't know it). As such I believe that they will address one Guard and the Center positions in FA (see above comments).
My Mock Draft after the break
Note: I am using the rules from the BTB Mock Draft for this little evolution.
Round 1: Dallas has too many holes to fill and the value at the 14th pick does not meet what the Front Office has in mind this year. They trade down with Green Bay for the 28th, 60th, 91st pick.
With the 28th pick in the 2012 Draft the Dallas Cowboys select- Dontari Poe DT Memphis.
- This addresses two needs with one move. A 3-4 Defense needs a monster Nose Tackle and Poe fits that mold at 6'5" tall weighing 350 lbs. he runs a 5.36 40 showing he has some athleticism on that big frame. With this pick Dallas can slide Rat to DE (which needed to happen about 3 years ago). With Rat at DE and Poe at NT opposing QBs shouldn't have a pocket to step up into.
Round Two: Now I know most of you hated the idea of trading down but we get an extra second and third rounder for the hassle. Dallas now owns the 45th and 60th pick.
Trade: Dallas trades 45 & 144 for the 42nd pick.
With the 42nd pick in the 2012 Draft the Dallas Cowboys select- Stephon Gilmore CB S.C.
-With so many secondary woes it is any wonder Jerry Jones didn't trade the next three years worth of draft picks for a top flight corner. That said I think Gilmore will be a solid number 2 CB to tag along with Jenkins. He may not have the most solid hands but his smooth hips and quick feet allow him to lock onto most WR (a much needed asset in Dallas).
With the 60th pick in the 2012 Draft the Dallas Cowboys select- Jonathan Massaquoi OLB Troy.
-JJ and Co. may or may not sign AA but either way they can't pass up the talent of Massaquoi. With Poe and Rat collapsing pockets Mass and Ware will be eating QBs all day long.
Round Three: We are now getting to the point that a team can take some chances. I have seen a lot of mocks taking Burfict in the third due to his athletic ability and it has become a major topic as of late.
With the 82nd pick in the 2012 Draft the Dallas Cowboys select- Vontez Burfict ILB Arizona St.
-I understand the controversy surrounding this issue. However, I just cannot deny or pass up the value here. If there is a coach who can get this kids head straight its JG and RR. I also think falling to the third might wake this kid up a little.
With the 91st pick in the 2012 Draft the Dallas Cowboys select- Kendall Reyes DT UConn
- Reyes is 6-4 and weighs 300 lbs while running a 4.99 40. In a 4-3 he is a DT but we need space eaters here in Dallas and now we have two. With Rat, Poe, Ware, Moss, and Reyes lining up to face opposing O-lines Vick, Eli, and RGIII (yes I think Shanahan is going to try to get him) will have nightmares for the next 6 years or so.
Round Four: This has been a defensive heavy draft so far and I plan to keep it that way.
With the 113th pick in the 2012 Draft the Dallas Cowboys select- Trenton Robinson FS Mich St.
- I had a hard time picking a player here because there weren't very many I was a huge fan of. However, getting a top 5 FS (granted it’s a weak class) in the fourth round isn't bad. Robinson is a converted corner with hard hands that can play the run or the pass. While he isn't a ball hawk he is a solid safety who can be groomed under M.G.
Round Five: Traded for Stephon Gilmore.
Round Six: The Defense seems pretty shored up by now (if everyone pans out) and Dallas can go strictly BPA not BPA with needs being talked about.
Trade: Dallas trades 175 & 213 for KC 171 & 229.
With the 171st pick in the 2012 Draft the Dallas Cowboys select- Philip Blake C Baylor.
- Some people probably feel like I should have traded up and taken Konz or picked up Molk but hear me out. Blake is 6' 2" and 312 lbs. This puts him right in to JGs range of O-lineman. He protected RGIII and shored up a Baylor line that had a stout run game as well as a stellar passing game. He can anchor, pull, and push DT around when asked. This will allow Callahan a little more breathing room with his lineman and give him a true Center to groom for the future.
Round Seven: Not much to say but see a need fill a need...I mean BPA all the way!
With the 229th pick in the 2012 Draft the Dallas Cowboys select- D'Anton Lynn CB Penn St.
- D'Anton Lynn is a zone corner who would allow Dallas to cut ties with Ball (Thank Jesus). He helped keep the Nitty Lions ranked as the No. 5 Pass Defense in the Nation and doesn't shy away from any assignment. While he may not be the next Revis he could be a solid contributor on game day.
So tell me BTB what do you think? Who would you rather have in place of another player? Is there something I missed about a player? Did I miss a player whom offered better value? I look forward to your chatter and will do my best to resond to any questions. Thank you for your time BTB and I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed writting it!

Not really sure I like this
Trading down that far just seems stupid unless it is for a 1st rounder next year to go with the one from this year (which would probably be valued similar to the 65th pick of this years draft with where the Pack is drafting.
I would be more for trading just a few spots down. We need quality not quantity. Quantity doesn’t help a team because each team has only 53 players on a roster, so having MORE doesn’t really do you any good. You need quality and you will miss the blue chippers by trading down so far, if we will even be able to find any at 14…

you don't think
Poe is a blue chiper?

I thought of getting Poe.
But only if you could trade down a few spots get Ingram or Perry and a second rd pick and then trade the 2 seconds to get Poe late in the 1st. Not a bad shot at it. Well presented. rec.
The guy was second-team Conference USA.
I will withhold judgment until his combine numbers and whatnot, but his production thus far doesn’t scream blue-chipper.
If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.
This is a much better year than last for a trade down.
So many players are so close together.
There is not much difference between the top LBs and the top CBs

My hope is Kirkpatrick
drops like a rock and we could move up a few spots to get him.
I don’t know if Poe is that good.
And another thing I don’t think Green bay would make that trade.

I don't either
But this was for fun. Remember I used the rules from the BTB mock draft game.

I am trying to figure out...
who GB would want so badly as to make this trade. Maybe they’d pick an OLB, but most of the value for OLBs in the first fall in the 20s, not at 14.

I'd imagine
They would try to replace Cullen Jenkins.

I think Kirkpatrick will be a faller in this draft just like Prince.
I could absolutely see the Cowboys passing on him.
If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.
The Cowboys
Trade down to 28 and only come away with GreenBay’s first 3 picks? Hmm..

This was my BTB Mock that OCC laid out. I just had too much to say for it to be a reply.

Welcome and good mock
not what I’d prefer, but it was clearly well laid out. Of course any mock (any post for that matter) will be met with some scrutiny, worry not. I’m one of those that wouldn’t want to trade down, but if we did could we get J. Jenkins instead? If Dre K did drop I’d stay put and grab him though.
I thought about it.
However, Poe looks very much like Ngata. He has a stellar bullrush, quick feet, and a decent swim move. He does have a technique issue but not to the point that you don’t want him. Jenkins on the other hand is risky and I’m not sure that’s what JG is looking for in the First.

Not Against Trading Back
I think we need a lot of help. We are missing out on sure-fire talent at 14, but if DeCastro and Kirkpatrick are gone, then I’m okay trading back for an extra 2nd and 3rd. I like most of the picks because they address needs. Not a huge fan of Poe, but at 28 its not a bad pick up. Gilmore would be great in the 2nd if we can get him. Massoquai would be a good late 2nd rounder, but I see him as a passrush specialist as a rookie, not a starter. Burfict would be a huge steal in the 3rd. The guy has all the potential in the world if he can get his head on straight. Getting him in the 3rd stocks our ILB group for years and gives us a huge playmaker.
Now, the second 3rd rounder is where I’m not a fan. If we pick up Poe, we don’t need another DL. With Poe/Brent in the middle, we would have Ratliff, Hatcher, Lissemore, and Spears at DE. Hatcher was a beast at RDE this year before he got hurt and can really disrupt the backfield. Adding another DE would be overkill when there’s still other needs. An interesting pick up would be Michael Egnew (TE). We’ll be needing a new TE to replace Bennett and Egnew looks like he’ll be a great pass-catching option for years to come.
I thought about picking him!
However, I felt having a 3 down DLineman who can collapse the pocket was more important. We don’t need a pass catching TE with Witten, Dez, Miles, & Robinson. Plus Phillips is a decent back up.

Terry hates it because it didn't include drafting Romo again.

Romo was UDFA
but I love the idea of putting down the Romo Man Crusher
"Do you want to be safe and good, or do you want to take a chance and be great?"
I would be ok with this is we are for sure staying with
the 3-4 (at least as the base set). If we go to a 4-3, then, not so much
If we stay at a 3-4 we need the big space eater in the middle, and while i like Rat, would love to see Poe there.
He who laughs last, thinks slowest
"Pleased to meet you, hope you guess my name"
"Really love your peaches, want to shake your tree"
Just my opinion, but I think too much is being made out of the 3-4 to 4-3 switch.
I believe if we do make the switch, it will be a lot like New England where we actually play both, and as I have heard Ryan prefers the 3-4, I would expect that to be the main formation. If that is the case, I think Poe is a good fit for this team.
wouldn't you like to see
Spencer, Rat, Poe, Ware on a four man front?
"Fear the Star" -A WISE Man!
by mho on Jan 24, 2012 12:54 PM CST via iPhone app up reply actions
Not really
would rather see Spears next to Rat as a DT in a 4-3….but that is just me
He who laughs last, thinks slowest
"Pleased to meet you, hope you guess my name"
"Really love your peaches, want to shake your tree"
really?!
Come on now. Spears has no rushing ability. Even Chia has said AA would be perfect as a 4-3 DE. Rat has all kinds of moves Poe would eat blockers or QBs and Ware is Ware! That front would rival Baltimore and the Giants. Eli’s would be eaten up like Crispy Cream Doughnuts.
"Fear the Star" -A WISE Man!
by mho on Jan 24, 2012 4:54 PM CST via iPhone app up reply actions
I did not say no to AA at DE
I said I would rather have Spears play DT (not DE) in the 4-3…Poe is a monster, but one built best suited to play a 3-4….that is all
He who laughs last, thinks slowest
The Weather is here, I wish you were beautiful"
Indecision, may or may not be my problem
true
However, a 350 mauler in a 4-3 allows RR to be mor versatile and he will take at least two blockers due to sheer power.
"Fear the Star" -A WISE Man!
by mho on Jan 25, 2012 8:11 PM CST via iPhone app up reply actions
It could work that way, or the off just runs away from him
:-)
Fun to talk about, if we went 4-3 would rather see the first pick on a LB…..we would need it because our 3-4 OLB would all become DE’s
He who laughs last, thinks slowest
The Weather is here, I wish you were beautiful"
Indecision, may or may not be my problem
true.
But it allows for the LBs and Stars (Ware & Rat) to get to the RB or QB. And yes we could use a ILB if we switch to a 4-3, but we could sign a guy in FA for that or get one in a later round.

Put Poe next to Rat and Rat will only have to beat 1 guy. Poe can eat up some blockers.

Hate the idea of trading down.
At #14 we should get a starter and potentially blue chip player. We never seem to draft well with more picks in the latter rounds either. Wouldn’t be opposed to trading up later in the draft if a player we like falls though.
Wish you were here and comfortably numb.
well with the rules for
The BTB draft exercise there wasn’t anyone available that I felt was worth the 14th pick. I went with value as per the CBS rankings.

Love the idea of trading down
but only a few spots to acquire a single 2nd round pick. Hopefully then we can package our two 2nd round picks to sneak back into the late first.
BUT, you broke the rules right off the bat with your first selction.
If you are following the BTB Mock draft rules, then :
“You cannot trade down, because it would be too easy to trade to the exact spot your prospect is sitting at. "
Someone had to point this out! haha
I love the first 5 picks

not a fan of trading down this year... i think we need a stud defensive player at 14 but on the other hand
i love the idea of trading back up into the late first from the second… if we can snag another starter like barron, still, poe, jenkins in the mid-late twenties for the right price we need to pull the trigger
Demarcus Ware- making Sheli Manning piss his pants since 2005
the cost is too high.
In reality there will be a player that is worth the 14th pick. But the cost to move up is too much, thus I traded back to Where Poe was ranked. Plus the more you draft in the first three rounds increases your chance for impact players!

Great post!
However, if we make those FA signings I see us sticking more to a BPA approach in areas of need. I do hope hope hope that Poe is available to us in the second round. I know pipe dream and if we did any trade it would be to move up for Poe in the late first or early second.

Sorry about that SBF
Just posted a reply quite similar . Hadn’t read all the way down the comments. I think a big man in the middle would be very helpful in RR’s line.
I love the idea of trading down far
I don’t feel like we can get a whole lot of studs early, assuming DeCastro and Kirkpatrick are gone, but we could still get guys like Poe, Barron, Minnifield, or Jenkins, while also getting additional ammo.
My only beef is trading that fifth rounder to get Gilmore. The only time I like a trade up is in the later rounds, where we don’t lose as much. That fifth round could be a pick that we use to take a risky guy, or shore up a position of not a great deal of need, like WR. Lots of studs come from the middle rounds. Plus I also think Gilmore will disappoint.
I think your mock is pretty good.
This is a much better year to trade down than last year.
by Jonathan Stern on Jan 24, 2012 11:48 PM CST reply actions
Jenkins might very well be there in the 20’s
So would Ingram.
At 14 you are not hurt much by a big trade down and you can really take advantage of the talent at LB and QB. This year you can get late first round talent in the second round. If you don’t do so you are missing out on what this year’s draft is about.

When selecting safeties
You want guys who can create turnovers as well as cover and tackle. Otherwise, you end having Elam and Senseless as. You cannot teach a guy how to become ball hawk. It’s a skill the guy has or doesn’t have. With that being said, I wouldn’t just settle for a dude who played at Michigan State.
I would have taken a longer look at Tramain Thomas, FS from Arkansas. In his final 3 seasons he registered 12 INTs, somewhere between 150-200 tackles, at least 5 forced fumbles, at least 3 fumble recoveries, at least 8 tackles for loss, and one blocked field goal. These stats tell me Thomas is always around the football, something Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu have a great knack of doing. I’m not saying he’s the second coming of those guys however; instead I’m saying he’s got tremendous upside.
"The tone is business," Garrett said. "Let's get to work. The Giants are going to be at the Meadowlands on Sunday at 4:15. They're an awfully good football team. We have to get ready for them."
I'll have to look more closely at him.
Thank for the comment. You make great points that I fully agree with. However, a ballhawk is just a guy with great hands…that can be taught.

You can't teach someone how to track the ball and pluck it. Either have it or you don't.
"The tone is business," Garrett said. "Let's get to work. The Giants are going to be at the Meadowlands on Sunday at 4:15. They're an awfully good football team. We have to get ready for them."
A safety, corner or receiver should've acquired that skill by high school, early college years.
"The tone is business," Garrett said. "Let's get to work. The Giants are going to be at the Meadowlands on Sunday at 4:15. They're an awfully good football team. We have to get ready for them."
i'd settle for Wayne Newton or Dorsey Levens ,LOL Jk
"The tone is business," Garrett said. "Let's get to work. The Giants are going to be at the Meadowlands on Sunday at 4:15. They're an awfully good football team. We have to get ready for them."
Only one problem I see...
You did not take into account that our most glaring need is at corner… our secondary has far more holes then does our defensive line. If you aren’t going to address that we are going to get beat with 10 yard 3 step drop passing for the entirety of the 2012 season,
Your mock looked ok… to me with that draft we could get a couple decent prospects but they all would be prospects. I don’t see anyone that come’s in and starts first game… we have the 14th pick overall… someone with some talent will fall to us with that pick we should be able to find a starter, especially with the big holes we have in the secondary.
I also think in the later rounds we should be going after Kellen Moore QB Boise State to support and back up Romo and maybe be the future QB of the Cowboys in 3-5 years.
RexP
THE DRAFT IS TOO MUCH OF A CRAP SHOOT....LET'S USE THE GIANTS MODEL .....
FREE AGENCY: Jerrah should sign Carl Nicks (OG), Mario Willliams (DE) or Calais Campbell (DE), and Paul Soliai (NT). With Carl Nicks on the OL and Mario or Calais and Paul added to our DL, we’d SEE a drastic improvement to our PASS RUSH and RUN DEFENSE!!! Yes, we could fit these FA signings into our current Salary Cap…..and they’re ALL young guys….LOL!!!
NFL DRAFT: Dallas should draft a good man-cover CB (i.e. Janoris Jenkins to compete with our practice squad CB Mario Butler), a backup stud RB like Terrance Ganaway (6’1" 241lbs/3rd & short/goal-line battering ram), and the Center from Wisconsin in the DRAFT and pay them at the Rookie Pay Scale rate. NOTE: RB Terrance Ganaway is the ‘animal’ that played with Robert Griffin (Heisman Winner) at Baylor and gained 1,547yds and scored 21 TDs this year alone!!!! If Demarco goes down again this year, this BEAST could pickup the running load without missing a beat!!!
With an improved Pass Rush, these 1st year CBs and our current group of (young but experienced) CBs would drastically improve our secondary. They’d be picking off passes left and right from our improved Pass Rush. With an improved RUN DEFENSE, our Inside LB’ers (with super fast Bruce Carter and Sean Lee) and outside LB’ers would be policing up any RB’s that tried to go inside or bounce outside because of (big-boy) Paul Soliai at NG and either (monster) Calais or Mario at DE. You’d also wouldn’t be seeing Brandon Jacobs (or any RB) gnashing us for 4-6yds runs on 1st down or "making it look easy" on 3rd&short/1st &goalline or have to hear him or Justin Tack talking trash about our WEAK ( middle) Defensive anymore.
Cowboys Offense: Drafting Terrance Ganaway would make HIM a terror on 3rd&short and 1st& goal-line. Ganaway running behind Carl Nicks and Doug Free would be a gorgeous sight to see for Cowboy fans world-wide. Demarco and Ganaway would be our OWN (Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs) for years to come!!! And did I mention that Romo would have even bigger success with JG’s play-action passing plays
EVEN JASON GARRETT SAYS TO FILL YOUR NEEDS IN FREE AGENCY AND PICK THE BEST AVAILABLE (I.E. PURE DRAFT)…..
