Texans will not franchise Mario Williams- Tempted?
ESPN is reporting that the Texans will not franchise Mario Williams according to team sources. (this link leads to another place as I saw this while watching espn NFL32 by Mort Anderson).
The tag would reportedly cost around 22 mil. Signing a long term contract would likely be considerably less, though would eat up nearly all of our available cap space.
What do you think? Do we go after him and then replace our other faulty "O-rings" with the draft (Oline, DB)? Or is it too cost prohibitive, ahla bad Jerry circa pre Garrett?
On a side note, Williams is still young, and about the same age as Ware when he signed his big contract.

We need to clear some more cap space first
Cut some guys ***cough*** newman***cough***, reconstruct contracts etc… And then maybe I’d consider him. I mean, no doubt he’d be a great pass rusher (yes, even in the 3-4), he played 5 games last season because of an injury, but guess what, he also recorded 5 sacks, only 1 shy of Spencer’s total. Now though it’s hard to make that kind of decision because of the incoming draft class of pass rushers, but does he deserve at least consideration? Absolutely
How injury prone is he?
I only really know his reputation but haven’t seen him play all that much. How durable is he outside of this past season?
I think this has been his only major injury
and he has been pretty durable. I wouldn’t worry too much about this being a recurring theme.

I doubt he would eat up anymore than 10 million of cap space
That means we will still have 10 million to spend on other free agents.
Sean Lissemore = The next Bruce Smith
Was including the incoming rookie pool
and doubt that he only commands 10 mil of cap space this year on the open market. Likely closer to the 15 mil. range.
Though if 10 mil was the cap number, I would be irate if we did not pick him up for that.

with the rookie pool we will still have 20 million to sign FA's
And where did you get that 15 million cap hit from? Who said he would cost 15 million next season?
Eagles 2011 cap hit for signing Namndi was 10 million. And he wasn’t coming off an injury.
Sean Lissemore = The next Bruce Smith
this came in the league with a silver spoon in his mouth.. his rookie contract was loaded
But i believe where ever he go he will take less bc no one will pay him that

The price would have to be right.
He may get alot of attention from other teams.
No may about it.
He’s going to get paid.

what makes you think
he would come to a 3-4 team in the first place?? He has been a 4-3 guy his entire career until this past year. My money is he will go to a 4-3 team.

I was against this for a while.
But the more I look at this roster the more I’m beginning to think our personnel fits a 4-3 scheme better. The secondary needs an overhaul regardless, but I think we could make a 4-3 work well with what we’ve got (especially if we added Williams).
LDE – Ware, LDT – Ratliff, RDT – Spears, RDE – Williams, WLB – Carter, MLB – Lee, SLB – James.
Draft a CB and draft/sign a safety that can tackle and cover and all of a sudden that defense doesn’t look so terrible.

There will be lots of rotation in a Rob Ryan system, but that would probably be the starting lineup.
Just follow the money.

But I agree I'd like to see more of Lissemore.

I think he was having fun in the 3-4 scheme until
He got his pectoral tear.

I wouldn't be so sure.
I seem to remember reading that he actually liked playing in the 3-4. In addition, I can even remember Julius Peppers saying at one point that he would be open to playing the 3-4. I think it will ultimately come down to money, not scheme, for Mario.
If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

If they can figure out a way to make the dollars work I'm all for it.

I have what might be a stupid question, but why can't Mario Williams play a 3-4 DE?
I mean, his build seems similar to that of Justin Smith’s. Couldn’t the Cowboys even do the same thing as the 49ers, and line Williams as the WDE next to Ware?
