Fascinating Salary Structure for Orlando Scandrick and Gerald Sensabaugh
As reported by AdamJT13 of Cowboyszone.com. He's proven reliable over the past few years so I have no reason to doubt their authenticity.
6 year $28 million contract with $10 million guaranteed
Signing Bonus: $3 million
2012 - $7.1 million
2013 - $2.0 million
2014 - $4.1 million
2015 - $5.6 million
2016 - $5.0 million
Analysis: A fascinating structure. First off, time to stop talking about Cortland Finnegan or Brent Grimes because Jerry ain't paying a guy $7.1 million to be a nickle corner.
The way I read this contract structure is that he's got next year to prove he can be a starting CB. If he fails his $2 million 2013 contract makes him a viable nickle CB before being inevitably cut that offseason. Not coincidentally, his guaranteed money ends after 2013. If he succeeds then he effectively becomes a $5 million a year starting CB.
6 year $22.5 million contract with $8 million guaranteed
Signing Bonus: $4 million
2012 - $1 million
2013 - $3 million
2014 - $4 million
2015 - $4 million
2016 - $6.5 million
Analysis: When I heard the Cowboys signed Sensabaugh to a similar deal to O.J. Atogwe I cried a little inside. But this insanely back-loaded deal warms my heart like hot cocoa after a day outside in the snow. The guaranteed money only runs through the 2013 season where he will be inevitably cut for poor performance. The signing bonus pro-ration will make the cost of cutting him about $3 million. Sensabaugh's agent is banking on him playing just good enough for the Cowboys to not want to eat that signing bonus pro-ration. He won't, this is a 2-year deal.

Fascinating
Say what you want about the FO, but those people can crunch numbers to maximize the salary cap.

nowadays many contracts are structured this way
teams almost always have an out without it killing their cap (although Jerry failed in this area with some of our players the last few years). You really cannot judge a contract before you see the details.
You are right – Sensabaugh’s deal looks like 2 years 8 mil, where if we cut him we pay a 2.4 mil penalty, which isn’t much.
Scandrick – if he fails its a 2 year 12 mil deal with the majority coming next year (I’m guessing we have cap space next year so Jerry meant to organize it this way?) and again an only 1.8 mil cap hit if we cut him.
These deals look fine to me. Minimal long term penalty involved.
Sensabaugh will be gone
no way he performs to deserve those late figures

Unfortunately, he'll still be effectively paid $4 million a year

Given the general lack of quality safety play
around the league, and some of the contracts given to safeties who aren’t really any better, it’s a bargain.
I don't care about being America's Team. I care about being America's BEST team.
+1
all you have to do is look at the Eagles and Giants experiments with cheap FAs in recent years to see how badly that can go.
4 million isn’t much. Like the resigning of our DL last offseason, it allows us to maintain somewhat decent performance while Garrett, Ryan and Jerry try to restock this team. This is not similar at all to the deals handed to Newman, Barber, Columbo, Davis, etc.
Nice work
These figures make it more unlikely that the Cowboys will overdraft a CB in the early rounds. Maybe a 3rd or 4th to challenge for the nickel spot.

how so? I can see the connection in looking at a FA CB, but as I pointed out in another thread, last years #14 pick makes $2,5 m a year for 5 years. Peanuts.

It is not the salaries that I am concerned with
Just looking at the larger picture, the Cowboys look to have paid Scandrick to play the #2, while Jenkins gets another opportunity to stay healthy, prove his worth (welcome to the luxury of being drafted in the 1st), and earn his next Cowboys contract.
Now, does that mean that the Cowboys will not draft a 1st rd CB to man the nickel next year? No, however, my thinking is that the player they draft instead, either DeCastro or Ingram in my book, can make a bigger difference to their respective unit faster.

If we get Ingram, this would be genius
The simple fact is great pass rushers don’t hit the open market. In the very rare instances they do, they command huge contracts because of their scarcity in free agency.
I think more than almost any other position you have to build your pass rushers through the draft. We hope to be drafting in the 20s for the next few years, so I would like to see us take advantage of this high draft spot and get a game-changing player like an Ingram.

I don't think so
It just means we won’t need to fill every cb slot other than Jenkins this offseason.
CB is still a big need for us, and I’d be surprised if we don’t take one in the first 2 rounds or sign a big name FA.
They have to because the talent level drops off too quickly
in the latter rounds. That’s why I’ve been sreaming they need to get a CB with the !st pick and let Newman go. Scandrick after next season will be let go or restructure his deal.
Not sure if you read the article
but is states the exact opposite. Scan’s contract is VERY Jerry Jones friendly in that it front loads most of the money in the 1st year (a year Scan will be “evaluated” as the #2 CB). If he’s good enough, he will be kept beyond 2013. If not, then the rest of the guaranteed $ will be paid by 2013 and that year is SO cheap, it would make no sense to pay $2 mil just so he can go play CB#3 for some other team. You pay him his 2 for that year, have him play CB#3 and you DRAFT your #2 CB (or pick one up in FA) in the off-season of 2012-13.
On another note, great contract for Sensy. Contrary to popular belief, I happen to think Sensy is solid. He would be MUCH better w/ quality FS play as he is consistently being asked to play cover 2 (deep 1/2 of the field) when he is an in the box / short zone type of coverage player. If you put a ball hawk FS back in cover 1, Sensy would be a BEAST! As such, I like keeping him as he’s not very expensive (Weddle signed for 8 mil / yr recently), and has the potential to reap a high return if surrounded by better talent.

yes I read the article but this is a response to foyesboys
previuos comment and I think we should draft a corner in the first round and then there are other needs to fill
Also if Scandrick's play is no better
by the next year, I think he’ll be cut and if re-signed it would be less than 2 mil for that year or restructured in lieu of being cut.
Doubt that
Cut and re-signed would mean other teams could sign him away. Scandrick is clearly worth $2 million even as a nickle corner.
by Blue Eyed Devil on Jan 7, 2012 11:31 PM CST up reply actions
I think we could see a trade back into the 1st this year for a CB.
From 22-40 there will be a few quality CB’s like Desmond Trufant, Alfonzo Dennard, Chase Minniefeld and Janoris Jenkins…
I really like Desmond Trufant in the 2nd.
I am not convinced the Cowboys will make a play for a big name FA CB like Finnegan. Look for a journeyman CB maybe that can compete with the 3rd/4th rounder I mentioned above.
The big name this offseason will be either on the OL or DL.

I refuse to believe they're going to have Orlando a chance to be#2
I will be terribly disappointed if they think he can shut anyone down on the outside. I’m still praying for a top of the line cb so he can stay in the slot where her belongs

Scandrick is currently the 4th highest paid player in 2012
On the entire team. He’s getting a lot of money.

does Scandrick seem more like a zone CB in your opinion?
i dont see him as a good nickel DB or in man coverage but they obviously see something different.
Every team has a great gameplan until they get Punched in the Mouth. Sean Lee is a welcomed addition at ILB & Kegabear's prediction about Spencer looks spot on so far.
I see him as a player with amazing speed and average skills
Take the last big memory Cowboys fans have of Scandrick, for example. Victor Cruz catches a big bomb in Week 17 over him. What happened? Scandrick followed the route and slowed down at about the 10 yard line expecting Cruz to make a move. But Cruz didn’t, he got behind Scandrick because Cruz just ran full-speed the whole way. Scandrick, how behind Cruz hits the jets and actually catches up for Cruz. He looks back for the ball which allows Cruz to get even further downfield. Then Scandrick hits the jets again and catches up a 2nd time now in a perfect position underneath Cruz. Then Cruz turns back to catch the ball, Scandrick overruns him, and Cruz makes an easy completion.
This showcases Scandrick’s amazing speed that even when Victor Cruz is running flat-out as fast as he can go, Scandrick as the make-up speed to catch up with him twice.
It also showcases Scandrick’s poor technique. A better CB would have used that speed to stay stride-for-stride on Cruz’s inside hip and wait for Cruz to turn around. Then, instead of overruning Cruz, that better CB would turn around and make an easy interception or at worst an incompletion because he’d be directly in-between the CB and Cruz. No pass interference because once he’s turned around he has as much a right for the ball as Cruz does.

Who's fault Scandrick or Campo?
Wish you were here and comfortably numb.
It's clear Campo isn't helping
He’s had 4 years with this Scandrick and hasn’t stepped his game up.
It could be that Scandrick has just maxed out on skill. But if I’m paying a guy $7 million to be a starting corner I’m definitely going to change the coach because I know what’s going to happen with this coach and player combo – nothing.
by Blue Eyed Devil on Jan 7, 2012 12:47 PM CST up reply actions
You saw the same thing I did!
Scrandrick is often in good position to make a play, but just doesn’t. Some of it is technique and I think better coaching could make a difference. The other part IMO is he just doesn’t have good ball skills.
I think we have to hope it's coaching
and I think there’s evidence to suggest it is. Both under Rob and Wade the CBs’ #1 move seemed to be “never let them behind you” so the priority is for the CB to do everything possible to get between the WR and goal line and make the tackle. This is in contrast to other defenses that prioritize making a play on the ball. Fanpost on this topic upcoming by the way.
The one constant between two DCs is Dave Campo. So is Campo getting in their head about making the tackle rather than the play on the ball? Perhaps.
Perhaps if we have a secondary coach that coaches making deflections and interceptions Scandrick will become a better player because he has the make-up speed to catch a guy and tackle him if he misses that play on the ball.
Or maybe he’s just maxed out his skill and can’t make any better decisions at the speed the game is played at. Who knows? But as fans I guess we have to be hopeful.
by Blue Eyed Devil on Jan 7, 2012 1:52 PM CST up reply actions
This is quite a thought
Different coaches bring different things with them. After JG meeting with some of the coaching staff I’m hoping Campo’s days are at an end. Perhaps a new perception is what we need for the secondary.

If you're going to eat poison, you might as well lick the plate.
Thats not an entirely fair way of looking at it
they organized it that way to take advantage of cap space in the near future.
If you’re going to look at it this way, you may as well note that Scandrick is going to be a steal at his 2013 salary number.
lol. Her.

That way if he can’t take over the starting spot, we won’t be paying too much to leaving him at nickle and still able to pay a different starter if one comes along. It keeps our options open for the future. + Gm jerry

Scandrick was in perfect position
to pick off that duck Manning threw to Cruz late to stifle the Cowboys rally at 21-14.
But he did not look back in time and Cruz outpositioned him.
He can stay with receivers but really needs to develop better skills and a method of finding the ball once it’s in the air.
I like he’s chops. He tries hard, but for lack of a better description, he needs to be “coached up.”
If I was a Pirate and had to rid the vessel of one CB, Terrance newman would be set afloat in a small dingy with a week’s worth of water and some dumplings.
Scandrick could keep swabbing the deck for now.

I STILL believe in Tony Romo.- 10/2/11
I still like going after grimes or Finnegan AND drafting a corner. I mean…Newman is 100% gone right? So we need either replace Newman or Scandrick. Isn’t Finnegan pretty good at covering the slot? Either way if there isn’t a new guy brought in to fill one of those spots then we don’t stand a chance next year. I consider Scandrick to be a starter with the amount of time he is on the field so i don’t think the money is an issue at all.
Same thing I'm hoping for...
Let’s draft a CB in top three rounds where ever it happens AND sign a proven veteran. This position has been too weak for too long. Ball/Newman are heading out so let’s bring in one proven player and one we believe can ultimately start but gets a year or two before we’re dependent upon it.
I think this ^^^ is crucial!
Sign a top-10 FA CB to start next year alongside Jenkins. The FA period begins in March prior to the Draft. It places you in a position of strength by removing CB from your list of needs and pushes you towards selecting the BPA in the Draft regardless of position.
Draft one of the top-tier corners in the 2nd or 3rd round of the draft (deep in CB talent). This gives you flex-ability not only in personell on the field but it also gives you a young ie,read (CHEAP) plug-in for cutting or replacing other starting CB who might not be performing or get injured. See NYG for lesson on how you can never have enough CB’s (especially in a pass happy league)
Pick a late round developmental CB in the draft that has high upside/coach-ability. Gives you another young low cost project that can be an injury sub if needed or moved to the PS if u cant use him on the 53.
If we were able to achieve this (a very realistic goal) it could end our secondary woes immediately. And in 2 years be a position of strength for this team.
This we know is UNDENIABLE. – We simply MUST address the back end of this defense. The question is how to fix it??? We did O-line last year with wholesale changes and it seems to be working or will be working once we get that great next Gaurd plugged in.
Lets fix that damned secondary next for our run in 2013!

Actually I think Finnegan would play the outside much better than the slot.
But ultimately that’s fine with me since I think Scandrick is probably our best option as slot corner right now and for the forseeable future.
If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.
I like the idea of Grimes
But I don’t see us being able to outbid others for him. But I would really like him 0.o
Newman has to be gone. He cost us quite a bit in those last 4-5 games. If they had to clear another spot to bring in drafted talent I think Ball is gone. Walker did an alright job (better then Ball), we still have Butler so I’m wondering what he’ll look like when he shows up in the preseason. I’m hoping they sign an FA if they don’t seem to want Elam.

Plus Jenks contract
If affordable under cap, still like the idea of FA CB as well. Jenkins contract expires after 2012. If theScandrick as an outside starter experiment turns into Alan Ball Part 11, now we are down two corners, or horribly out leveraged in negotiations with Jenkins on his second contract +still in need of multiple starting corners.
Together, we WILL make it happen!

Makes me feel a little better
I think we can do better than Sensabaugh, and Scandrick is a nickle cornerback.
I will awaken my expectations for the Cowboys when Jerry Jones is in the ground.
Thank you B E D
I have been stating the very same thing about a 1st round draft pick Cb for a few weeks now – Scandrick was given a 6 yr contract to be the next #2 CB. I didn’t know about the contract structure but was sure that he would at least get the upcoming year to secure the job.
I do, however, think there might be a FA CB pickup for modest (3-4 yr / 20 mil) guy like Tracy Porter. I’m a strong believer in having a veteran presence in “category” and if both Walker, Ball and Newman are released, the old guy would be Jenkins. There will be other teams cutting “dead weight” CBs as well (like the Broncos, Eagles,
But, make no mistake – a CB drafted at 14 overall isn’t a wise choice. Both for the reasons stated above about Scandrick’s contract AND if any of the premier guys are still avail at 14 (Claiborne, DreKirk, Dennard), there’s probably a reason. There’s far better talent in this draft in offensive line (Kalil, DeCastro, Martin, Reiff) that are all possible top 10 picks. The drop off between these 4 and the next group of O linemen is considerable so it’d be better to draft one of them than to reach for a CB that probably should be drafted in the late teens to early 20s.
I wouldn't rule out a 1st round corner
even the best corners usually play nickle their first year as they adapt to the NFL.
But I don’t think it’s likely, I think it would be likely to see a 2nd or 3rd round corner taken.
by Blue Eyed Devil on Jan 7, 2012 10:11 PM CST up reply actions
I would personally only draft Claiborne or Kirkpatrick at #14.
They are the elite corners in my book.
I myself am looking at corner as a third or fourth round option (perhaps second if a guy falls). I think you can still get good corner value in those rounds, and I would prefer to get higher rated talent at OLB, DE, S or G/C before adding a corner.
If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.
So that would make it
two three year CBs playing the #1 and #2 WRs and a rookie playing the slot WR. Jenkins lining up vs. the likes of Maclin, Manningham, Colston, M Wallace, etc. Scan vs. Cruz, D Jackson, E Sanders, etc.
That’s a combine experience level of 5 yrs in the NFL playing WRs who are all in the top 20 in receiving yards, etc.
The Cowboys need a CB but they need someone with experience and who’s not really expensive. Overall, CB is a need but not as high a need as OG and OLB.
by Tyrone Jenkins on Jan 8, 2012 9:53 PM CST up reply actions
Yeah, that's somethign else that isn't being talked about
They drafted Jenkins to be a #1, he’s going to get his shot.
This could turn out well, solving our need for a #1 WR. Or it could turn out really bad if he can’t handle the jump up in competition.
One thing’s for sure, there will be a lot to analyze at both corner spots next year!
by Blue Eyed Devil on Jan 8, 2012 11:12 PM CST up reply actions
Oh no doubt. I want a vet to be brought in as well.
If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.
Wow, very interesting
Makes me feel much better about those contracts for sure. Very good post.
Good informational post
My take is JJ and the front office should’ve waited til mid or towards the end of the season to make Orlando Scandrick an offer. To actually see some progess if any. 7.1 million next season scares me, that means the pursuit of a FA corner or a early RD draft pick of one isn’t going to happen. They might just try to fill the gap with a Frank Walker type, which won’t fix the problems
Billion dollar dream and hundred dollar nightmares
That's a concern
I’m worried about who’se going to play the nickle. I just have this sinking feeling it’s going to be Alan Ball vs. some 4th round draft pick in training camp and we’re going to end up with the Alan Ball show again.
