BCS Championship Game Open Thread: LSU vs Alabama... Whom To Watch

Former Dolphins head man Nick Saban has assembled a near-professional roster down in Alabama. They head to New Orleans to try and win the rematch and BCS Championship against undefeated LSU.

The long awaited rematch has arrived, as LSU and Alabama prepare to face off for the BCS Championship in New Orleans. No two schools feature as many pro prospects as these two SEC universities, as witnessed by my summer series, "Pet Cats". At the time, there were 15 potential draftees between the competitors, and apparently the question of who was the best team went unanswered in LSU's 9-6 victory on November 5th.

Now, after over a month worth of rest for each school, they meet again for all the marbles. LSU is undefeated with victories over several top programs, while Alabama has only the loss to the Tigers but a much higher grade of players with pro potential.

The game features the two best defenses in the country, as well as the top two cornerback prospects in LSU's Morris Claiborne and Alabama's Dre Kirkpatrick. For those wondering, LSU's Tyrann Matthieu is a true sophomore and will not be eligible for the 2012 amateur draft.

Consider this your open game thread, to discuss the action as it unfolds. Geaux Tigers, Roll Tide.

Follow the jump for a list of the pro prospects (according to NFLDraftScout.com) from each of the combatants.

Alabama has the better collection of prospects

by looking at the position ranks.

LSU probably has the best player on the field though, in Mathieu.

"The tone is business," Garrett said. "Let's get to work. The Giants are going to be at the Meadowlands on Sunday at 4:15. They're an awfully good football team. We have to get ready for them."

He is my favorite college player at the moment.

The kid has a motor that just doesn’t stop. Long live the Honey Badger. He don’t care. He don’t give a $#!%.

Mathieu will play safety in the pros. He isn't good enough to play cb in the pros.

He is a good college cb but his style of play is better suited to safety.

Jerry is the end all in Dallas.

I take SEC DBs with a grain of salt

However, Peterson (Corner) last yr, Mathieu (Corner) and Barron (FS) this yr are really good. The reason I am typically skeptical as to how good SEC DBs really are is because the QB play is usually not the greatest from yr to yr.

"The tone is business," Garrett said. "Let's get to work. The Giants are going to be at the Meadowlands on Sunday at 4:15. They're an awfully good football team. We have to get ready for them."

by Rohpuri on Jan 9, 2012 7:58 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Oh yeah.

The best QB they’ve had recently is Garcia from South Carolina, probably McElroy is a close second. Either way it’s not like they’ve seen an NFL style offense anytime soon. I guess Tebow was a pretty good college passer too. They do have their fair share of elite athletes at WR, so I guess that makes at least the one on one match ups interesting.

I doubt that

Konz was the # 1 ranked Center in his Class(which would have been next year)

I don’t think any of the top 5 from this year beat him out from that ranking…

Here’s a theoretical play from 2010: Snap. Tony takes 7 step drop. Tony looks left at Miles, who is doubled, and looks right to where Roy Williams should be…but instead sees Colombo on his back and a Defensive End foaming at the mouth jumping over Marc’s carcass. Tony proceeds to run like hell and look for Witten

you probably don't want to rewatch this one but Bama absolutely threw at him

But that’s besides the point. For the NFL he’s a good 3rd slot CB but too small.
I’m not claiming big things for Dre in the NFL either, he may too stiff. Combine will tell a lot on him and the LB’s from Bama.

You are both right and wrong.

Correct: I was confusing them.

Wrong: Not because I’m a Bama homer, but because I don’t follow LSU and didn’t pay attention to them. To me they are just “those tiny LSU CB’s” and the same thing.
The way others might confuse Bama linebackers Hightower and Upshaw.

Now: I’m still going to watch that game and let you know if Bama completed a pass on Claiborne!
By the way, you should learn to not be so personally attached to your tteams.

Oh, and as far as 'love for Bama from fact' I've been telling people to stay away from a lot of Bama players

And have never overly praised them and wanted them drafted.
Read any of my posts on that you want.

I said stay away from Ingram last year.
I would NOT draft TR in the first.
And all of their players on D are kind of big and benefit from having had the best coaching available and being surrounded by so much talent.

I’m all wait on see on Barron, Kirkpatrick, Upshaw, and Hightower for the combine. They need to show quickness and agility for me to be interested.

That D was so good, including the DL that no one talks about, that it’s really hard to judge them as individuals.
However McClain has been pretty good for Oakland so far, altho nothing that suggests a premeier player.

Not only that...

DeCastro might help out whoever plays center. I think one of Akrin/Nagy will workout at guard, if not it may be a situation that the play determines who plays guard. That could be one of the best OLs this team’s since the Stepnoski days.

If that’s the case, I think DeCastro’s better providing he passes the medicals. So one can infer that they’d trade up for DeCastro, which I’d be okay with.

Just the nature of the NFL

Teams like to spend 1st rounders on amazing athletes. Teams feel like they can get really good starting guards in later rounds. They can grab say a big 6’5 320 pounder and turn him into a pro bowler. Coaches, coach em up on technique get them stong in the weight room and you get a good starting guard

Nah, it's how good Bama's D is playing. They would make Ok St or Oregon look like this too

One of the best D’s ever put together.

Pessimists say the cup is half-empty, while optimists say it's half-full. Well, the real question is, is it a good beer? Realist Larry, 2011

by Realist Larry on Jan 10, 2012 9:12 AM CST up reply actions

Nope. Jefferson makes all defenses look good.

Ok St would score on Bama. Oregon would too. Jefferson plays scared and is the single worst college qb in captivity. Lsu fans know this.

Jerry is the end all in Dallas.

by football mensa on Jan 10, 2012 3:14 PM CST up reply actions

Ok State and Oregon would find out what a real D is like and get destroyed

LSU already showed that early in the year against Oregon and Bama’s D is even better,
Not to mention that their OLine and TR would roll through them and put 40 up easily.

Ok State would get blown out like Mich. State did last year. Complete domination on the LineofScrimmage, no running game, and their QB would be begging for mercy by halftime if he wasn’t knocked out of the game.

Pessimists say the cup is half-empty, while optimists say it's half-full. Well, the real question is, is it a good beer? Realist Larry, 2011

by Realist Larry on Jan 10, 2012 9:01 PM CST up reply actions

Nope. Not "always". But this year, those other teams inother conferences have no f'in' idea what would hit them if they played LSU or Bama.

LSU destroyed Oregon early. Bama’s D is better, Bama’s OLione is better and Bama’s QB play is better.
And Richardson would run through those teams for 200 yards. It’d be no contest.
Did you see what Bama did to Mich. State last year? hardly a healthy QB left in the game, I was seriously afraid for those guys.
And LSU would do the same.

be it upshaw or kirkpatrick (eh) or barron their defense is stacked with first round talent who could help us out

Jordan Jefferson can make any d look great.

Dre and Upshaw had a good game but if you think they are all world tackling machines go watch hi lites of bama vs Ga. Southern. Bama allows over 300 yards rushing to a div 2 school.

Nope. Everything this year was gravy. Astute Lsu fans were targeting 2012 as the year.

Thoughts….

1. Alabama had more upperclassmen on defense. Next year Lsu will be what you saw on Bama this year.

2. I can’t get into specifics but there is a reason Jordan Jefferson kept playing. Every Lsu fan hates Jefferson and for good reason. Next year and for the 3 years after Lsu will have stellar qb play. Last thing about Jefferson his job of bagging groceries begins in May and I hope someone will skull frick his gorilla face.

3. Lsu loses very little this year. If you thik Brockers is good watch Anthony Johnson next season. He is a 295lbs true frosh playing dt. Not only is there Mingo and Montgomery but Jamariua Roscoe will be added to the mix. .

4. You will see the best stable of running backs in all of college next season. Kenny Hilliard is the beast. His uncle is Dalton Hillard who played with the Saints.

5. This was a good season for Lsu. It won’t be close to how good they will be in 2012.

6. Congrats to Tide fans on this site.

Jerry is the end all in Dallas.

Now was that so hard?

Here’s a theoretical play from 2010: Snap. Tony takes 7 step drop. Tony looks left at Miles, who is doubled, and looks right to where Roy Williams should be…but instead sees Colombo on his back and a Defensive End foaming at the mouth jumping over Marc’s carcass. Tony proceeds to run like hell and look for Witten

Now, if somebody doesn’t agree with that, that’s cool. I also don’t agree with the fact that I don’t have $10 million in my bank account. But the fact that I don’t agree with it doesn’t make it any less true.

But they have a good QB and some good young WR’s.

Roll freakin Tide.

I moved to OK several years ago, and now will have to put up with annoying OK St fans who want to talk about how they won their conference, Wheedon is unstoppable, blah blah. To which I reply, always, “Iowa St.”

That was the purest beatdown I’ve ever seen, and I am totally satisfied.

Now, for the Cowboys, go pick some good players.

You then watch you secondary look better. No one can cover for as long as we gave Eli!

by jtgreet02 on Jan 10, 2012 10:23 AM CST via mobile reply actions

Agreed

The Giants secondary isn’t that good. They only “look good” when they’re d-line is killing the quarterback. Otherwise, they get roasted.
