It's really time for Cowboy fans, and Cowboys management to look into the mirror and swallow the ugly truth. Say it with me. This roster and staff, as currently comprised will not win a Super Bowl. I think once we accept that, we can start letting go of all of the things that don't matter, and start looking at the big picture. It doesn't matter if Tony Romo gets his ring in Dallas. It doesn't matter if Jason Witten, or Demarcus Ware retire as Cowboys. The ONLY thing that matters is compiling a collection of players and coaches that can legitimately be in the hunt for a Super Bowl annually.
I think Tony Romo is good enough to win a Super Bowl, but he will not. At least not here. This organization has failed him, and there is not enough time to repair the foundation of this team before Romo's days run out.
I think this team's priority, above all else should be getting the next guy here, and getting him ready. There could be as many as 6 to 7 legitimate 1st round quarterbacks in the 2013 draft, and the Cowboys need to put a star on one of their helmets. You get your next guy now. You don't try to be smarter than everyone else and grab some kid in the 5th round. You ignore all other holes, you spend that draft capital, and you get the next guy here. The transition is to the next quarterback is key. Do you remember the wait from Aikman to Romo? It was unbearable. We thought Aikman had a lot more football left, one play changed it, and the organization got caught with its pants down. The next guy was not in the fold, and we got stuck with a bunch of Quincy Carter's, Vinny Testaverdes, and old Drew Bledsoes. If this team wants to be relevant again in the next decade, its got to have a real deal signal caller going forward. It starts and ends there, without a quarterback going forward we have nothing. You get the next guy here, you get him ready, and the second you feel he is, you heartlessly trade Tony Romo for whatever you can get. This is a business. I love Romo too, but he doesnt have enough years left for this team to get it together.
Anyone who can't be a part of the next Cowboy era should be shown the door. Good player or not. Legend or not. Destined for the Ring of Honor or not. None of that matters.
There are some keepers here. I think DeMarco Murray is a keeper. Tyron Smith, Sean Lee, Claiborne, Carr, Carter, Crawford, maybe a guy like Church. The jury is still out on some of the rookies, but you get the point. These are your building blocks, its time to start laying a young, strong structure around them. Im not sure if Dez Bryant is a keeper. For the right price, I'd cut bait. DeMarcus Ware is one of the best at his position in the history of the game, but if by moving him I can ultimately make this team better, Im moving him. Yes, you are losing the best pass rusher in the game, if that means I get to draft say a really good pass rusher, and a solid center in exchange, pull the trigger. Same could be said for Witten. I know that Jason Garrett is an ex-cowboy player, and Rob Ryan is really cool, but I'm not sure if they are keepers either. There is no time to be sentimental. Let's liquidate all assets. Let's be the team that shows up to the draft with 2 firsts, and 2 seconds.
Its time for the team and the fanbase to start thinking differently. Every time we plug a hole on this roster, another one springs up. It's because all we ever do is put bandaids on weaknesses, and we've got too much money tied up in a few guys. Maybe we need less star power and more tough guys....more smart guys.
We are not close, and don't let anyone tell you that we are. It's time to overhaul this whole thing. It will require patience, but this team has got to do something other than what it has been doing.
