Cowboys showing interest in Stanford Routt
Cowboys have apparently reached out to Routt's agent. As we are all aware there's a connection with Rob Ryan. It would make it interesting if the Raiders release Michael Huff (which reportedly, it could happen). Could we possibly see both of them coming to Dallas. You could argue that they'd be upgrades over Newman and Elam, and that would open up a different mindset on priorities on draft day. Well folks, looks we are going to enjoy a fun rumor-filled offseason. (I missed that last year.)

This does not incite optimism about the impending offseason shakeup.

Yea im not high on this at all
This kinda implicates a CB won’t be taken in the first 2 or 3 rounds. I would rather get one early in the draft than a Raiders cast off who will be 29. If we are gonna go after a CB in FA then don’t play around go after Cortland Finnergan, Brandon Carr, Lederius Webb.

Even if they do sign him
I could still see them going after a corner in rounds 2-3. We definitely need more than one, and while he had a down year he is still better than newman, ball et al. And, given his contract that he was just cut out from, I would venture to guess that his salary would be more reasonable than some of the other available names. Wouldn’t even be surprised to see them go after him and Finnergan, Carr, or Webb..

If they go after him and another FA CB
Say good bye to a CB in the first 3 rounds. That’s 4 CBs in your case locked in would be crazy to draft one on day one to be a 4th or 5th CB. I’m not drafting a CB in rounds 1-3 to be a ST / 4th CB. That’s what the rookie would be if Routt is signed to a marginal contract and Cortland or Webb is signed which won’t happen.
Scandrick just signed a new deal, Jenkins is our best CB and one of the better ones, a CB in the draft is the smarter thing to do instead of signing a 29 year old raider cast off who led the league with 17 penalties not worth it.
Again if we are going to get a corner worth alot of money go big or go home. Other than that sign a 4th corner who hasn’t had a PFF rating steadily declining each of the last 4
years with 17 penalties, and draft one in the first 3 rounds. For the 5th corner let Mario Butler battle it out with said 4th CB.

I never said that they would do all three
No, a combination of two of the scenarios was my point, and is likely (necessary?) however.
Like him or not, he (sadly) presents an upgrade to the current roster, warts and all. Scandrick is not guaranteed an outside role, and expect competition to be brought in for that spot. Ironically they seem like similar players, and both fair poorly with PFF.
Last year he proved he is not a #1 corner, however he did excel prior to that as the second guy (and in more man coverage, which seems to be the direction that we are headed I might add). I am not saying that I support the move, however, we would be foolish to not at least kick the tires considering his athletic abilities and prior stint with Ryan. And even at 29, that is still a favorable five year swing from our current starter. He is nothing more than a stop-gap, but we have so many holes to fill that we have to have a few plugs here and there, be it Routt or someone else.
Would this be an ideal signing? No, but it doesn’t mean it would be a bad one either.

really?
It doesn’t implicate anything to that effect. What it tells us is we are working to infuse talent at the weakest part of our team. I like Stanford Routt, Its an upgrade, and we need some cbs.he’s also young ,and smart. Let’s ink him, and then get branding Carr,or finnegan.
Young at 29 when the season start? Lol
Not at all. So your saying sign Routt and or Carr /Finnergan while also drafting a CB in rounds 2 or 3? That makes no sense at all. Jenkins, Scandrick, Routt, Carr /Finnergan. That’s all before the draft if that’s the case there’s no way in he’ll the boys are going to take a CB early with G, C, DL, OLB, S all being bigger issues if there are already 4 well paid CBs on the roster

I'm sure the front office would love you.
Seriously, hit them up. They’ll probably give you a job with that patchwork quilt style of building a secondary. Fits their standard operating procedure to a T. I’m sure you could give them some great suggestions for the O-line as well.

I don’t see anyone saying that.

LOL
nobody to that point had said that…
by TheCowboyWay on Feb 11, 2012 5:06 PM CST up reply actions
And really
it hinges on if you believe that one of those guys is an upgrade over scandrick…
Though injuries do occur every year and it would be nice to have “starter type” depth… just something to consider

I think we should
this is a deep CB class, we gotta get some young DBs in the pipeline. Also, the CB position takes a lot of damage and we need to build depth there
by somebodyquiet on Feb 11, 2012 2:35 PM CST up reply actions
yep
There’s a lot of depth at cb the plan is being able to go into the draft with the option of taking BPA, which is exactly what JG told us he wanted to do. We have 2 corners under contract. 1 of which is on the road to recovery,so bringing in 2 corners in FA and 1in the first few rounds is likely. Remember that Jenkins is in his contract year, Garrett is smart, and he knows that. Going forward ,it only helps us.to upgrade the talent. We need 5-6 cbs. It will happen. And 29 isn’t that old ,and routt has history with RR. Personally ,I like.Carr the most ,and terrell Thomas from the Giants second , but Stanford playing one of our cbs is a plus.
Quality is more important than quantity.
Even if it takes a couple of years to get it right. Filling as many spots possible with as many mediocre players possible isn’t upgrading. It’s just reshuffling the deck.

Vela's thoughts on Routt
[…] Routt’s numbers in ‘10 were solid. Comparable to Johnathan Joseph’s and Terrell Thomas’ that year. In the very low 7s, I think 7.2.
He’s stopwatch fast and has gotten better. It’s not unusual to see CBs fluctuate year to year. That’s the norm for most. I’m wondering if there was a health related reason? Was he playing hurt?
One thing I have seen. Very good breakup . About 55 the last two years. So I wonder what types of passes he yielded?

Some other numbers on Routt
9 penalties in 2009.
11 penalties in 2010.
17 penalties in 2011.
Seventeen!
Routt makes Flozell Adams blush.
Is it possible he accrued the penalties because he was playing out of his depth?
He doesn’t seem like the type of player that should be covering top tier WRs. I’m surprised Joyner has such decent numbers for him despite the flags.
But I think your question is valid too. What the heck is he doing? Are they mostly interference? Personal fouls? Seventeen is definitely unacceptable!

I wish I had an answer for the penalties AC.
But I’m not really sure what was going on.
His overall rating on PFF really hasn’t been good for 4 straight years. In 2011 he ranked 89th overall. But PFF penalizes grades hard for penalties.
His pure Coverage numbers in 2011 are quite solid though (+4.1, rated 19th CB). His run defense was rated about the same as Jenkins (pretty average). But the 17 penalties is just crazy. This team already has some penalty problems, not sure if adding one of the league leaders in penalties in a good idea.
Interestingly, his last year with Ryan, 2008, he only had 2 penalties (he also only played 474 snaps too though).
how do i put this
when looking at Raiders and their penalties, treat it like a basketball players offensive stats under Don Nelson or Mike D’antoni:
they are highly inflated. for some reason the Raiders are always a league leader in penalties. I know on the defensive side one cause is the heavy bump and run system they use but mainly these guys arent taught fundamentals on both sides of the ball and make silly penalties and are normally coached up to play like its 1977(they tend to rack up a bunch of personal fouls)

Some other numbers for Routt
2010 & 2011: 30 Starts, 28 Passes Defensed, 6 INTs, 1 Pick6, <53% completions the past two seasons.
Walter Football rated him as a top 10 CB last season.
"The tone is business," Garrett said. "Let's get to work. The Giants are going to be at the Meadowlands on Sunday at 4:15. They're an awfully good football team. We have to get ready for them."

Depends on price
we’ll need at least 3 CBs this year, IMO. If he’s the best CB we get this year, I’ll be upset. If it’s the 3rd best …. good.

Familiarity is not a good reason to make personnel decisions
Look at the crap Parcells did here. Last year, there were superior alternatives to Elam and Coleman. I really hope someone puts their foot down for objective player analysis, as opposed to how easy it might be to plug a guy into a system.

Billion dollar dream and hundred dollar nightmares
a question...
Is Stanford Routt as good as say a Terrell Thomas, who would presumably come alot cheaper???
by 405dallasfan on Feb 12, 2012 12:53 PM CST via mobile reply actions
We had interest in Jammer last year
he is younger than Routt and may come cheaper of course the Raiders haven’t released him yet.
ABN = anyone but Newman.
by TCB Orange Dino on Feb 12, 2012 5:11 PM CST reply actions
as long as the price is reasonable, if he comes even at half of newmans price he is worth double what newman is
still allows them to re-sign Jenkins and draft a corner in the first 2 rounds.

No
on Routt and Yes on Huff. Unless Routt wants to play for the veteran minimum I think we’re good. Michael Huff plays at or near a pro bowl level and he’s worth signing.
No on both.
