The pot connection

It´s funny to see how people around BTB remember Quincy Carter (how to forget him right?) and his drug related issues. However are still high (hopefully not literally) about the cowboys drafting Janoris Jenkins.

Star-divide

A lot of guys still call Carter stupid for doing drugs right before a drug test and I would totally agree. But then what does that make Jenkins? Here´s a list of what he´s done wrong so far:

  • He was arrested in May 2009 during a downtown Gainseville fight that resulted in probation and community service.
  • On June 1, 2009, Jenkins was arrested near a bar by Gainesville Police for fighting and resisting arrest after punching a man in the head around 2 AM.
  • On April 23, 2011, Jenkins was cited by a Gainesville police officer and charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession. He was cited for the same violation in January 2011, and paid a $316 fine.

On April 26, 2011, he was dismissed by the Florida Gators football team, due to his second drug related arrest in 3 months.

Dre Kirkpatrick is also one of the cowboys prospects for this upcoming draft and well...

  • Kirkpatrick was arrested on January 17th, 2012 in Manatee County, Florida on marijuana charges. He was booked at 12:49 A.M. (00:49 military time).

I think I´m more concerned about Jenkins that Kirkapatrick. ´Cause Dre has been arrested only once, but Jenkins has a history of running in trouble with the law. And one could make the argument that perhaps Jenkins a bit nuts and belongs somewhere he could solve his issues instead of stepping into the huge spotlight the NFL is.

So what do you think guys? which pothead should we draft?. Or, should we draft anyone of this guys? So far it doesn´t look like they´re taking their careers seriously and I´m not so sure i would trust this guys defending Brees (who I believe we play this next season) or one of the top QB´s of the league. If we draft one of tis guys perhaps we should give him jersey #17 the one Carter played with and also the Chicago Drug Lord wannabe Sam Hurd.

The first two for jenkins

are stupidity/youth and alcohol it sounds like. Kids do that kind of stuff, hell most anybody who goes to a large university has probably been in a few drunken brawls at parties – the difference is that they didn’t get caught.

How many of us thought Sam “I’m Tony Montana” Hurd was an upstanding guy and a good player before his drug empire came crashing down?

The first misdemeanor mary j charge is whatever, being dumb enough to be caught with it again is what worries me more than the charge itself.

Kids make mistakes, some more than others – you can’t know a person solely through those mistakes. Our limited knowledge of him says to stay away but if RR and JG interview him and think they can work with him then I will trust in their judgement.

If you don’t, then get very crafty in your game play and try to "steal" a win anyway. You must have fine, upstanding…boring friends. Either way I think you know the point I was trying to get across.

I get the point, I just don't completely agree with it. I don't buy into he was just being a kid.

I may be more willing to buy into if it was one instance of fighting, but two? Is he just incapable of learning from his mistakes?

Ding ding ding! We have a winner.

I don’t care about the legality or morality of pot. I only care that the NFL has banned it.

In the 17 seasons from 1966-1982, the Cowboys went at least to the conference championship game 14 times. In the 16 seasons from 1996-2011, the Cowboys have won 2 wild card games.

I didn't like Quincy Carter bc he was a bad QB

not bc of the pot. If he had been the next Joe Montana, we would have found a way to keep him. I don’t care if a player smokes pot; the only thing that would concern me would be missing games due to suspensions. Plenty of players have problems at that age and pan out in the NFL. I’m not against taking a chance on a stud if he falls far enough.

it wasn't pot with Carter.....it was cocaine....

completely different beast altogether but still mary jane is an issue becuz they should know and be aware of the consequences doing it at this level will entail.

Jimmy Smith was drafted late in the first round last year by Baltimore becuz his stock fell due to character concerns arising from his use of drugs his freshman year at colorado….for the next two years he stayed clean..stayed out of trouble and truly showed that he made a mistake out of youth and that he had put it behind him. Jenkins has a awful recent history and Dre either made a stupid mistake of being in the wrong place at the wrong time or finally got caught doing what he was always doing. The scrutiny of both will only increase from here on in and if they are members of this organization the microscope gets only more powerful. This team has had too many issues with personalities thinking they are above the team and even when something is innocent it gets blown out of proportion simply becuz of the team they are on.

If thru interviews these youngmen, who hold so much promise show they are capable of truly becoming part of a team I say let them come with open arms. If they refuse to accept that simple fact about being in the league then wish them well and let another team deal with the headache regardless of where they get drafted.

Oh, my bad about it being cocaine and not pot; that is a different beast

but my point was that he wasn’t very good, so no one cared (I was thrilled). Dre’s story seems open to interpretation. I guess the interviews will tell the coaches whom to draft if some of these guys fall to us. I trust JG.

its always a shame to see someone with athletic ability throw it away over an addiction problem....

Carter had promise but never developed as he could have and you are left to wonder if the drug usage had anything to do with that.

I hope that Jenkins and Kirkpatrick both mature quickly and avoid the lure that the path too frequently traveled entails….

just psychological.

Physical dependence is a bitch to get over, even something as innocuous as caffeine nearly made me keel over during withdrawals.

One Pot Bust

doesn’t really bother me. Lots of kids try marijuana while in college (or high school). Lots of kids try alcohol then too. Some get caught, most don’t, whatever. However, harder drugs like cocaine or Oxycontin would really scare me off from a player if I was GM Jerry. I’m going to guess that at least 25% of college-aged kids experiment with marijuana during their time as a student, so “one strike” doesn’t concern me.

Two or more strikes? Within a few months of each other? Well, that’s a big red flag for me.

25%

LOL. I would go as high as 50%. The only concern for me is that I believe it is EXTREMELY hard for the casual pot user to get caught. 99% stay at home, don’t bother a soul and by no means are a high priority to law enforcement so no trouble for them. This kid (jenkins) wants to get out and mix it up too much, has a nose for trouble and obviously doesn’t learn from his mistakes. Even worse is that he won’t conform when he literally has millions of dollars on the line. Drafting him could be disasterous, although I’d risk burning a second rd on him if he interviewed well.

Kirkpatrick, I’ve not heard of trouble prior this, so that could just chalked up to whatever and is still ok in my book for now. Would love to have him.

About..... Kirkpatrick

For those of you that don’t know… maybe you should go to Alabama and see for yourself. The reason Dre probably didn’t get caught prior to this is that the Alabama Police and State Troopers are all major fans. You don’t hear about Bama kids getting in fights at bars or getting caught with dope, or doing anything wrong for that matter. They are all model citizens. The kid goes to Florida where the cops don’t care if he’s a Bama player or a Florida player or any other school. They are more likely to in Florida to arrest a player then in Alabama or even LSU. Just an observance over time being in this area. Something to note that all the sudden all these Bama players had legal issues… but before the NC game they didn’t have any issues… lol “They were saints” Now five players with legal issues within 2 weeks of the game… come-on who’s eyes are closed now.
