Two of the most talked about players on BTB, Carl Nicks and Brandon Carr. With the Cowboys having money to spend and JJ wanting to make the fan base happy, I do believe one of these two players will become a Dallas Cowboy in 2012. Both would fill a major need, both are of similar age, both are in the prime of their careers, both will cost similar money. Probably not possible to get both, but one is doable. So which one? For me its an easy choice... Carl Nicks is where I'm spending my money! Allow me to explain.
First I'll start with what I believe will be the type of contract each will command. For Carr I'll use the contract of Johnathan Joseph as market value. Joseph signed a 5yr/48.75M contract with 23.5M guaranteed last year with the Texans. I believe Carr will be looking for a similar contract. For Nicks I'll use his teammate Jahri Evans as market value. Evans signed a 7yr/56.7M contract with a 12M bonus. I don't believe there is a better comparison in terms of talent, age, and situation than Joesph and Evans. So I believe these two contracts are a very accurate starting point.
I think you could get either player, (Carr or Evans) for somewhere around the 5yr/50M area. I said Nicks, you say that's a lot of money for a guard, I say your right it is. But take a closer look at what you're getting. If you were putting together a list of the best guards in the NFL, how many names would you write before Nicks? One could make a very good argument that you wouldn't write any. He is a superstar at his position! He is in the prime of his career and would have a huge impact on our o-line. With Tron at LT and Evans at LG, the Cowboys could have the best left side in all of football.
Now ask yourself the same question about Carr. I believe you could write a bunch of names before you got to Carr. Think about this, is he even the best corner on his team? IMO you could get an equal impact from a second tier CB, like a Tracy Porter or Terell Thomas, or from a CB in the draft. This is not to say I don't like Carr, because I do. He is a nice player and would be an immediate upgrade for our defense. Imo I don't believe he would be as much of a difference maker to warrant breaking the bank on him. I believe the better short and long term investment would be Carl Nicks.
You could argue that CB is a bigger need and you might be right. You could say Carr is a more expected and sexier move, and you'd be right. If you're going to spend equal money why not get the better football player, Carl Nicks. The one who for sure is an All Pro player, the one who can directly help your most important player (Romo) have greater success. It just make more sense to me.
So who ya got........?
