Position Outlook: Rankings Revision

As Dallas has been very active in FA, which wasn't expected, I feel the need to update my Position outlook series. Dallas has brought in many players, and Also I have been thinking about revising the "ranking system". I will not be publishing any mocks, but will merely update the rankings to bring them in line with the new roster. To that end, here is the basis behind the Position Outlook series:

This is the latest installment of my series called Position Outlook, where I will be profiling each position and the players that Dallas has for that position. I will be giving MY opinion on the relative strength of the position, and how likely I think Dallas will be drafting that position in the 2012 NFL Draft. I will include All current players in this evaluation.

So with that in mind lets look past the jump for the Updated Position Outlook:

First off lets review the Ranking system;

5 Stars- Minimum Amount of Quality Starters at Position and At least one quality Backup for Position= BPA only if player is ranked significantly higher than any other player, and would not be a factor in FA

4 Stars- Minimum amount of Quality Starters at position, Unproven Depth = Address as BPA and FA for Depth

3 Stars- Minimum of one Quality player at starter, young, but unproven Depth=slight need, BPA in rounds 4-7 preferably, look to fill need in FA

2 Stars-Serviceable Starter(s), No Depth = solid need, BPA if within rounds 1-3 if not taken care of in Free Agency

1 Star- No Quality players at starter nor in depth= major need, Draft no later than 2nd round, would take precedence over BPA if Gap is close enough, and is a must target in Free Agency

Now after some careful Consideration I want to make some changes to this. Before I go into those I want to make clear on some definitions.

1. Quality Starter- A player that more than likely would not be "beaten out" for a position. Examples of this would be Miles Austin, Jason Witten and Demarcus Ware. They tend to be the Cornerstones of the Franchise, and only injuries keep them out.

2. Serviceable Starter- A player that starts, but they tend to be limited in some way, and can be upgraded from. An example of this would be Anthony Spencer, Marcus Spears, and Orlando Scandrick.

3. Quality depth player- A player that has the ability to become a Quality starter, but may lack the playing time, due to injury, or is behind a Quality Starter. Example Bruce Carter.

4. Depth Player- A player that lacks something that prevents him from becoming a Starter at this time. They are usually limited in some fashion, but can become a Quality Depth player. Example would be Barry Church, Victor Butler, Kevin Kowalski.

So with Those out of the Way here is the "revised" Ranking system:

5 Stars- Quality Starter(s) at Position, quality depth player for Position= BPA only if player is ranked significantly higher than any other player, and would not be a factor in FA

4 Stars- Quality Starter(s) at position, only depth player in backup = Address as BPA and FA for Depth

3 Stars- Serviceable Starter(s), Quality depth players =slight need, BPA in rounds 4-7 preferably, look to fill need in FA

2 Stars-Serviceable Starter(s), Depth players in backup role = solid need, BPA if within rounds 1-3 if not taken care of in Free Agency

1 Star- No Serviceable Starter(s), only depth players in Backup= major need, Draft no later than 2nd round, would take precedence over BPA if Gap is close enough, and is a must target in Free Agency

So with the new Rankings the "outlook" on each position may change slightly, and I hope that it will provide a larger consensus on them. Bear in mind these are the Pre-FA rankings, and the only change is due to the "revised" ranking system

QB position 4 stars(formerly 3)

Offensive Tackle position 4 stars(unchanged)

Offensive Guard position 2 stars(formerly 3)

Offensive Center position 2 stars(formerly 5)

Corner back position 2 stars (unchanged)

Safety position 2 stars(formerly 3)

Defensive Line 3 stars(unchanged)

Inside Linebacker 4 stars(formerly 3)

Running/Full Backs 5 stars(unchanged)

Outside linebacker 4 stars(formerly 3)

Wide Receiver positions 4 stars(unchanged)

Tight End position 4 stars(unchanged)

As you may note there were several changes in the rankings. Now come the interesting part. Did Dallas "Upgrade" any rankings via FA?

For the QB position- Dallas brought in Kyle Orton to replace the departing Jon Kitna. This means that Dallas not only has Tony Romo, who is a top 10 QB at worst, but A solid Backup QB in Orton, plus Stephen McGee in development. Regardless of your Feelings for McGee, I have to Give the QB position a ranking of 5 Stars- Quality Starter(s) at Position, quality depth player for Position= BPA only if player is ranked significantly higher than any other player.

For the Tackle position- other than The swapping of Tyron Smith and Doug Free(which wouldn't affect the ranking) there hasn't been any movement on this which Considering that I feel that this is a 5 star position is ok. Thus the Ranking Remains a 4 Stars- Quality Starter(s) at position, only depth player in backup = Address as BPA and FA for Depth

The Guard position however, has seen some major turnover. Gone are Kyle Koiser, Derrick Dockery, and Montre Holland, and are replaced By Mackenzy Bernadeau and Nate Livings. While I am not sure of their roles, both do have starting experience in the league, and while the signings have been given mixed reviews, I have to say that this position should, at worst, get a ranking of 3 Stars- Serviceable Starter(s), Quality depth players =slight need, BPA in rounds 4-7 preferably.

The Center position, on the other hand, is well to say the least, the most polarizing position. In my first set of Rankings, I gave the position 5 stars. However as you may note, that drastically changed in the "revised" rankings, going down to a 2. As of right now Dallas has yet to sign any FA centers, though Bernadeau is said to have center experience. That being said, until Dallas makes a move, I have to say that this position remains unchanged at 2 Stars-Serviceable Starter(s), Depth players in backup role = solid need, BPA if within rounds 1-3 if not taken care of in Free Agency.

The Corner back position is another position that has undergone some Changes. While the the "backups remain the same, the waiving of Terrance Newman, and Signing of Brandon Carr does upgrade the position. I would still like Dallas to bring in some more talent though. Thus I have to give the position a ranking of 4 Stars- Quality Starter(s) at position, only depth player in backup = Address as BPA and FA for Depth.

Another Position that got a new player was the Safety position. the signing of Brodney Pool to replace Abram Elam on the surface may be an upgrade, however most seem to think this is a more lateral move, especially given the 1 year deal that Pool took. Add in the Fact that Dallas both Barry Church and Danny McCray remain the primary backups and thus the safety position remains unchanged with a ranking of 2 Stars-Serviceable Starter(s), Depth players in backup role = solid need, BPA if within rounds 1-3

The Defensive Line is an interesting one. It continues to be a mix of Serviceable Starters, and Quality Depth, but WE are unsure as to how it will be handled in the season. That being said there as been no movement of players(either being released or brought in, thus again the ranking remains: 3 Stars- Serviceable Starter(s), Quality depth players =slight need, BPA in rounds 4-7 preferably.

I have to admit that the ILB position has given me Headaches from day one. WIth the breakout season that Sean Lee had, the inexperience that Bruce Carter has, plus the fact that All Dallas had behing them was an UDFA that spent the majority of last season on the PS, Finding a Ranking that fit this position was troublesome. Add in the Fact that Carter is considered a player that could challenge Sean Lee as the "best ILB on the team", and you see my difficulties. With that being said, the signing of Dan Connor, Sean Lee team mate at Penn State, a player that was considered a Quality depth player in Carolina, the ranking got a lot easier. I feel Confident that I can give this position a ranking of: 5 Stars- Quality Starter(s) at Position, quality depth player for Position= BPA only if player is ranked significantly higher than any other player.

Now the OLB position is interesting also. This is another position that has given me issues, and really depends on your view of Anthony Spencer, who was given the "franchise tag", but has yet to sign it. Other than signing some of their depth players, to cheap contracts Dallas hasn't really done much in this regard. Since Spencer hasn't signed his Franchise tag, he is "officially" on the roster, and his future in a sense will be determined by the draft. Thus the OLB position remains the same (on the strength of Demarcus Ware), with a ranking of 4 Stars- Quality Starter(s) at position, only depth player in backup = Address as BPA and FA for Depth

The Running BAck position underwent a slight, if surprising, alteration. The Signing of Lawrence Vickers, and subsequent releasing of Tony Fiammetta is an upgrade on a position that I felt was already as good as one could get. Thus the ranking remains unchanged at: 5 Stars- Quality Starter(s) at Position, quality depth player for Position= BPA only if player is ranked significantly higher than any other player.

Now as far as the WR and TE positions go, Ifeel that while both suffered a loss from last year, neither loss actually impacts the Ranking, as both were FA's at the time. Thus Both Position remain unchanged @ 4 Stars- Quality Starter(s) at position, only depth player in backup = Address as BPA and FA for Depth.

So for Quick Referance here are the Updated rankings:

QB-5 Stars- Quality Starter(s) at Position, quality depth player for Position= BPA only if player is ranked significantly higher than any other player.

Tackle- 4 Stars- Quality Starter(s) at position, only depth player in backup = Address as BPA and FA for Depth

Guard- 3 Stars- Serviceable Starter(s), Quality depth players =slight need, BPA in rounds 4-7 preferably.

Center- 2 Stars-Serviceable Starter(s), Depth players in backup role = solid need, BPA if within rounds 1-3 if not taken care of in Free Agency.

Corner Back- 4 Stars- Quality Starter(s) at position, only depth player in backup = Address as BPA and FA for Depth.

Safety- 2 Stars-Serviceable Starter(s), Depth players in backup role = solid need, BPA if within rounds 1-3

DL-3 Stars- Serviceable Starter(s), Quality depth players =slight need, BPA in rounds 4-7 preferably.

ILB- 5 Stars- Quality Starter(s) at Position, quality depth player for Position= BPA only if player is ranked significantly higher than any other player.

OLB- 4 Stars- Quality Starter(s) at position, only depth player in backup = Address as BPA and FA for Depth

Running Back- 5 Stars- Quality Starter(s) at Position, quality depth player for Position= BPA only if player is ranked significantly higher than any other player.

WR- 4 Stars- Quality Starter(s) at position, only depth player in backup = Address as BPA and FA for Depth.

TE- 4 Stars- Quality Starter(s) at position, only depth player in backup = Address as BPA and FA for Depth.

Thus I will have to stop here. I will try and update this post as necessary, if Dallas makes any changes. I will try and have an updated Mock out, hopefully by the end of next week. After that I will try and get another one out prior to the Draft. I hope that this series as helped you as much as it has helped me.
