Lately there have been numerous mocks that now have Trent Richardson being taken at #4 by the Browns or at #5 by the Buccaneers. Although, come draft day there is a strong possibility that he will fall to us at #14.
This scenario is assuming that David DeCastro is gone when the Cowboys pick (I don't think he'll make it past Seattle or Arizona). If the Cowboys stick to their BPA approach, then taking Trent Richardson would be an easy decision to make. Now I know that a lot of you would say "We already have 2 good running backs". But let me ask you this, If you had the opportunity to take the next Adrian Peterson, would you?
If this were the case then I could see us possibly trying to trade Felix Jones or DeMarco Murray, I'd personally keep Murray as he is more versatile and a far superior blocker. So what could we get for Jones then? A 2nd round pick? A 3rd round pick?
The draft is so deep at our positions of need (CB, OG) that I would have no problem taking a 3rd round pick for him. The pass rushers in this draft are somewhat scarce as there is no JJ Watt or Julius Peppers but there are a lot of solid guys that will still be there in round 3 that we could have our pick of. A guy like Vinny Curry out of Marshall, Jared Crick out of Nebraska, or Kendall Reyes out of Connecticut would do wonders to this defense.
The point I'm trying to make is that Trent Richardson is a special player who is as close to a sure thing as you can get, and that someone like him does not come around every draft. It's not like drafting Trent Richardson would be saying that the Cowboys are giving up on Murray (a 3rd round pick) but rather saying that they are adamant about establishing a consistent running game, and frankly Felix Jones has been far too inconsistent in staying healthy to continue to rely on him.
Ultimately, this whole scenario depends on if Trent Richardson is even there at #14 but if the Cowboys are to follow their BPA approach then drafting him would be a no-brainer and would add a future superstar to our backfield to pair with an emerging star in Murray. Both guys are so versatile and explosive that having both of them on the field would cause nightmares to defenses across the league, could you imagine that? Anyways, this has been my argument as to why they should consider Richardson if he is there at #14. What do you guys think?
