Building a Team vs Accumulating Talent

I have heard Bill Belichik say many times, that the key to winning titles is Building a Team, not accumulationg talent. I think this is a very important comparison to consider as draft day approaches only 24 hours away.

So what exactly does building a team mean??? It means finding those RKG's that Garrett talks so highly of, it means finding guys who do certain things well, getting them to buy in to what you are selling, and putting them in positions to contribute in a variety of ways by emphasizing what they do well.

Basically, you can't have probowlers at every position, so sometimes you have to use 2 or 3 guys to do the job that one pro bowler might do. This is the method that most teams use at running back now. Teams used to want one guy who was big enough to run between the tackles and in short yardage, but was also fast enough to get around the corner and break the big run. Now teams have a 1st and 2nd down back, a 3rd down change of pace back, and a short yardage back.

Essentially the logic lies in the fact that you have 53 players on your roster, 46 of which are active on Sundays. You want as many of those guys to be contributors as possible. However that may be, whether special teams or situational defense, or 3rd downs.

Accumulating talent is the approach that you want to get a lot of extremely talented players, regardless of how well they fit into your scheme, or the culture you are trying to build.

The point I am trying to make is... For alot of you guys who want the Cowboys to draft a particular player (no names mentioned here) because he is "the best player at his position that has come along in decades," or "he's an athletic freak." It is important to consider that it finally seems as though this franchise is building a team, not accumulating talent, so if the name you are hoping to hear isn't called tomorrow evening, there is no need to throw a shoe, or curse at Jerry Jones and Jason Garrett. They finally have a big picture plan in place. This franchise is building to something greater than just next season, they are attempting to become an upper echelon team in the league for years, if not decades, to come. This draft is extremely important in that journey, but remember, the people in that room, know alot more about what is going on in that building than any of us do....
