I keep reading comments from Cowboys' fans that seem to validate their love for our off-season choices by saying this - our defense lost at least 5 games for us last season. If I really believed such tomfoolery, then maybe I’d be ecstatic with the fact that all our attention has been given to the defense. But I don’t believe that. Our defense definitely wasn’t stellar by any means, but it wasn’t as bad as people are making it. We were in the middle of the pack in yards allowed. Teams like the Giants, Patriots, Packers, and Saints were all in the bottom ten. Then, some specifically singled out our secondary. Our passing yards allowed were also in the middle of the pack. Teams like the Giants, Patriots, Packers, and Saints were the BOTTOM FOUR. So why were all those teams more successful than us? Answer = Offense.

We didn’t lose 5 games due to poor defense. I think people misplace the blame of those games.

The Jets

We didn’t lose because our defense let the Jets come back on us. We lost because we turned the ball over 3 times. We lost because we had a punt blocked and returned for a TD. We lost because Romo had an untimely pick. People forget about how our defense generated 2 turnovers, one of which was a Sean Lee pick that he ran back to the 1 yard line.

The Lions

We didn’t lose because our defense broke down on us. People overlook the 2 Romo pick-six TDs. People overlook the fact that our defense held the Lions just 3 points after 3 quarters. That’s not bad considering how good the Lions’ offense was last season. In all, our defense only allowed 20 points. That should've been enough to win the game.

The Patriots

We didn’t lose because our defense let Brady march down the field and throw the game winning TD with 22 seconds left. We lost because our offense didn’t perform. We held the Patriots to just 13 points for almost 4 full quarters. That’s pretty good. And some of the Patriots points were a result of us turning the ball over in our own territory. We are lucky they didn’t score more just from our turnovers alone. What is more mind boggling is why our offense couldn’t muster up more points against one of the worst defenses in the league.

The Cardinals

We didn’t lose because our defense let us down at the end. We lost because our offense couldn’t put up more than 13 points.

We had several games that we won despite having poor offensive outputs. We won one game without even scoring a TD. The Cowboys can use more help on defense without question, but we better strive to improve our offense as well.
