Dallas Cowboys Quick Hits: Early Camp Start? Safety Matt Johnson Signs And Practices

S Matt Johnson, fresh off his trimester completion at Eastern Washington, has inked his rookie deal and made his way onto the minicamp field.

Today is the final day of the three-day veteran mini-camp for the Dallas Cowboys. This will be the team's last official gathering before they have a chance to actually put the pads on and hit each other, legally, come the end of July.

In fact, Dallas is looking to get a little bit of a jump on said training camp; they've petitioned the NFL for the opportunity to start training camp three days early.

At the root of the request, is that Dallas' first regular season opponent, the World Champion New York Giants, will begin training camp July 27th while Dallas is slated for the 30th. Training camp open dates are set for 15 days prior to each team's first preseason date; there is no correlation with the regular season.

Approval of the date change is not only up to the NFL, but is also dependent on the NFLPA stamping their A-OK.

With the Cowboys recent run of taking on the league, it's not surprising that head coach Jason Garrett is preparing to move forward with business as usual.

"What we have to focus on is what our situation is," Garrett said. "We can't worry about what the Giants' situation is or any of our opponents. We know when we're going to report to camp and we know when we're going to play our first preseason game and first regular-season game."

In other news from minicamps final day, Dallas has inked their second fourth-round pick, safety Matt Johnson, to a rookie contract according to The Mothership's Josh Ellis' Twitter.

Ellis would later correct that it is both first-rounder Morris Claiborne and the team's initial fourth-round Kyle Wilber as the remaining unsigned draft picks. Johnson, who is finally eligible to join the club after completing his academic responsibilities at Eastern Washington, participated in practice today.

Stay tuned to BTB as we'll recap the day's action via the Twitter rotisserie later today. If you can't wait, make sure you check out our Facebook page for a sneak preview.
