ARLINGTON, TX - DECEMBER 11: Dan Bailey #5 and Matt McBriar #1 of the Dallas Cowboys react after missing a field goal.
We reported earlier in the week that punter Mat McBriar had worked out for the Eagles on Monday, and that he followed that up with a workout for the Cowboys yesterday.
This morning, news reaches us from the National Football Post that McBriar signed a one-year deal with the Eagles, where he'll compete with second-year incumbent Chas Henry for a starting spot.
McBriar is a two-time Pro Bowler and, when healthy, was easily one of the best punters in the league. At this point, we have no more than idle speculation to go on as to why the Cowboys didn't attempt (or failed to) sign McBriar. Fact is, the Cowboys chose to go with 23-year old Chris Jones over the 33-year old McBriar. No contract details have emerged yet, but McBriar is due at least the veteran minimum of $825,000, while Chris Jones is signed to a three-year deal that will pay him $465,000 in 2012.
At the end of the day, this may be more about Chris Jones and less about Mat McBriar, as Bryan Broaddus from dallascowboys.com notes:
Would have been nice for McBriar to have been a part of the training camp roster but it shows you how they feel about Jones. Battle for job

Either way, here's wishing McBriar a speedy recovery - and the occasional bobbled hold when playing the Cowboys.
