We still won't be seeing Danny Coale doing this for a while.
We are almost to the dog days of summer. And for the Dallas Cowboys, that comes with a PUP - the players listed as active, but physically unable to perform. The team has released the list of five players who are still recovering from injuries and who will not be able to participate fully in training camp in Oxnard:
- G Mackenzy Bernadeau (hip)
- WR Danny Coale (foot)
- CB Mike Jenkins (shoulder)
- S Matt Johnson (hamstring)
- C/G Kevin Kowalski (ankle)
Four of the names were expected, but the injury to Matt Johnson was under the radar and is a surprise, at least for me. He and Danny Coale (I pause here for a moment of silence as I continue my grieving process/penance) are going to miss valuable time, and both of them are players that the team probably needs out there at their respective positions. However, the Johnson situation does look to be partly a matter of extra caution, based on comments from head coach Jason Garrett.
"He did go through the conditioning test yesterday, and we really advised him if it gets tight at all on you, stop," Garrett said. "And that's what he did."
Far more disturbing, in my mind, is having both Bernadeau and Kowalski out. I don't think I need to belabor how important the interior O line is for the Cowboys' hopes this year. With one projected starter out, this situation has me making a run to the local warehouse store for case lots of antacid. Hopefully, both will be back soon. Jenkins has been expected to start the camp on PUP for some time, and would be expected to suffer the least from lost practices if he is working on his conditioning.
After the jump, it's TWITTER TIME!
We are going to go to live Twitter feeds soon (OCC is still doing a little tweaking on the presentation), but in the meantime, here are the Tweets from the first day of practice at Valley Ranch for the players eligible to report early.

Coale and Bernandeau will work with Britt Brown today which is positive sign. One of the best in the league at getting players back on field |

Nick Eatman |
Mackenzy (hip) and Danny Coale (foot) on the cords and not practicing .. But typically it means they aren't far from returning. |

Not sure what Matt Johnson's injury is, but he doesn't have a helmet and will be doing rehab with athletic trainer Britt Brown. |
|
Calvin Watkins |
Skip Peete and Rob Ryan look great after their weight loss. Maybe a combined 125 pounds. |
| Bryan Broaddus |
Should be an interesting practice for Lance Dunbar at running back. He is the only one practicing. Darrell Scott is not. |
|
Todd Archer |
S Matt Johnson has a slight hamstring strain and is sitting out. He did it at his one practice in the June minicamp. Team being cautious. |
|
Tim MacMahon |
Joe DeCamillis just dropped his first high-decibel F bomb. Cowboys camp is officially underway |

Tyrone Crawford is getting work at right guard on the punt team. If active on game day will most likely be on all teams. |
|
Tim MacMahon |
Morris Claiborne is fielding punts, but wouldn't call him a natural back there. Just whiffed on one. |
|
Bryan Broaddus |
Surprised that Adrian Hamilton is not getting any work with this punt team. I thought he would have been on all these. |
|
Brandon George |

Bryan Broaddus |
Wade Wilson just yelled to Lance Dunbar, hey let's get some wheel routes here...Dunbar only RB practicing just smiled at him |
|

No word on if Dallas Cowboys rookie safety Matt Johnson injured his hamstring taking his final exams at Eastern Washington or not |
|
Bryan Broaddus |
Watching the way Beasley runs his slants, gives me a feeling that he can do some work on the outside. Something he is going to have to do. |
|
John Machota |
Cowboys safety Gerald Sensabaugh, who had knee surgery in June, was seen with training staff but isn't |
|
Bryan Broaddus |
Jason Garrett telling James Hanna that he has to play with more bend in this routes. He is much too tall and upright. Little tired now. |

Rainer Sabin |
Cowboys LB Dan Connor, who signed in March, is practicing after missing OTAs while recovering from shoulder surgery. |

First play of team drills was a deep pass to Tim Benford, against Mo Claiborne. Benford had a step on him, but dropped the ball. |
|
Bryan Broaddus |
Right out of the box Garrett sends Benford vertical on Claiborne able to run with him but help from the middle of the field from Williams |
|
Bryan Broaddus |
Hakim takes his route inside with Claiborne all over him. Not much separation of staying on his hip as he crosses |
|
Bryan Broaddus |
Madison is one of those CBs that always seems to finish the play. Just knocked the ball away from Kemp on curl. |
|
Josh Ellis |
A nice pass breakup by CB Isaac Madison, who could be almost even money to make this team. Has been impressive. |
|
Bryan Broaddus |
Connor getting work with inside linebackers at the Will spot. Lemon is your Mike |
|
Bryan Broaddus |
Was asked other day about other outside linebackers that could be inside, just worked Albright at Mike. |
|
Bryan Broaddus |
Claiborne is going to have to learn that he can't grab WR off the line. He is going to have to be better with his hands technique wise. |
|
Bryan Broaddus |
Jerome Henderson is coaching one side of the field this morning, it's Mo's side. |
|
Bryan Broaddus |
Henderson's coaching points are to squeeze the WR better when he drives on ball. |
|
Josh Ellis |
That's a wrap. My vote for today's MVP is Lance Dunbar. But then again, he was the only RB practicing. |
|
Clarence Hill |
Stephen mcgee throws pick to Justin talplin Ross. Good play by Ross. Not surprised by mcgee |
|
Carlos A. Mendez |
Jason Garrett: 'We want to support Dez Bryant's family. Support him, support his mom, support his family.' |
|
Carlos A. Mendez |
Jason Garrett says Matt Johnson isn't going to practice the rest of the week. Probably will miss first practices at camp. Has a hamstring |
Football is back! (Well, in shorts and shirts, anyway.) And, as a preview of the live Twitter feed coming soon, I'm letting KD have the last word.
#CowboyNation, we're gonna like this guy RT @BCarr39: Tired of sitting, watching teams already practicing! I'm ready to get outta my mind!!!
