How many would have guessed that Jason Garrett would step in front of Wade Phillips during the 2010 season? Storylines are unpredictable.
If I were to tell you at the beginning of the 2011 season that Tony Romo would throw for over 4,000 yards, over 30 touchdowns and only 10 interceptions, would you believe me? If I told you that DeMarcus Ware would fall just a half sack short of 20 in addition to Romo's great campaign, would you believe the team would end up at 8-8?
What about DeMarco Murray breaking the Cowboys single-game rushing record? Any of you have that one pegged before the St. Louis game was unfolding?
The reality is, storylines happen week in, week out and throughout the season; and the majority of them are as unexpected as spring weather.
For the last season and a half, I've run an on-again off-again series called Storylines, where I set up a poll of some seemingly far-fetched game themes for all to vote on. Occasionally (ok, rarely) the poll will include some strange happening from the game that might not have been the prevailing storyline; but did contribute to the outcome of the game.
In that vein, let's take some guesses at what unexpected storylines will emerge for the 2012 Dallas Cowboys regular season. I have to reiterate, as I've actually had people reply in the comments "those won't happen!"... that's kind of the point. These are out-of-the-box ideas that most wouldn't place any money on; but could occur.
If the answers in the poll don't suit you, feel free to offer your storylines in the comments.
Poll
What out-the-box storyline is most likely to be a theme of the 2012 Dallas Cowboys season?
Felix Jones outgains DeMarco Murray (rushing/receiving/return) (181 votes)
Brodney Pool not only wins the free safety position, but earns a Pro Bowl nod (4th injury fill-in counts, too) (155 votes)
Tony Romo breaks the franchise record for game winning drives (currenly 6) and gains clutch/elite national notoriety (698 votes)
For 2nd consecutive year, led in TD receptions by player not in training camp (19 votes)
Tyrone Crawford will be the rookie that makes the biggest impact (257 votes)
Phil Costa will be one of the Cowboys Top 2 offensive linemen (125 votes)
By the end of the year, Bruce Carter will be the Cowboys best inside linebacker, not Sean Lee (473 votes)
