Cowboys Q&A: 'Ask BTB' Is Our Draft Working, Plus Who's The Punter?

How good have the Cowboys been at finding talent in the last few draft classes?

In honor of the great questions we've received, and so you don't have to read over 4,000 words in one sitting; we're going to divvy up the responses throughout the week. Don't forget, the mailbox is always open so keep sending those questions in!

You can send an email directly to me at KDP10For10@gmail.com. If you have a quick, short-winded question, feel free to Tweet me @BloggingTheBoys. How many of our top 10 players are from our last 3 drafts?

I got Dez Bryant, Sean Lee, DeMarco Murray, Tyron Smith, and possibly Morris Claiborne on this list. I have no trouble seeing all these guys playing in the pro bowl at some point and for a few of these guys, maybe sooner than later.

I think Tony Romo, Jason Witten, DeMarcus Ware, Miles Austin, and Jay Ratliff make up the other five.

KD: Funny you ask, Danny, as I just released my Pre-Camp player power rankings. Claiborne doesn’t make the Top 10 in my book, as that would be a little presumptuous considering he hasn’t ever even practiced. So that makes four players from the last three drafts that are currently in Dallas’ Top 10.

Looking a bit deeper; three interesting notes jump out at me:

  • Eight of my Top 20 Cowboys have been taken in the last three draft classes; one from 2012 (#13 Claiborne) four from 2011 (#4 Smith, #10 Murray, #11 Bailey, #20 Carter) and three from 2010 (#5 Bryant, #6 Lee, #14 Lissemore.
  • Every year is represented in the Top 20 except for 2009. Stop me if you’ve heard this before; but let’s be honest. 2009 was a horrible draft year for the entire NFL.
  • After a long stretch of importing a lot of their top talent, Dallas is turning into homegrown central. The only players in my Top 20 that weren’t drafted by Dallas are CB Brandon Carr and backup QB Kyle Orton.

KD,

Love the blogs...keep it up. My question for you something we have not talked about much this off season. We all know about the battle for the interior line and the 3rd WR. My question is about the special team punter. Do you see a scenario where Mat McBriar would be back with the team if he is healthy, or are we going to roll the dice with Chris Jones?

Guess you know its the offseaon when we start talking about the punter :-)

OCC: We know that the Cowboys are keeping close tabs on the progress of McBriar's rehab. Word is, the Cowboys are looking to bring him in for a workout once he's 100% healthy. At the beginning of June, McBriar had begun kicking again, as he continues his post-surgery rehab from a "drop foot" condition that threatened to derail his career.

It's hard to say whether McBriar will be ready to compete when training camp begins, but the Cowboys would be silly not to keep the door open for the two-time Pro Bowler as long as they can. After all, his most recent Pro Bowl nod came just a season ago in 2010 when McBriar led the NFL with a 47.9 yards per kicks average.

Tom: I think right now bringing McBriar back is the team's Plan A, with Jones being strictly the fallback. Whenever McBriar is ready to kick again, they will evaluate him, and if he is even close to his old self, I think he gets signed and Jones is forced off the team. The hope is probably for this to happen by the start of the season, but if not, then I would say Jones' spot is going to be week to week as they wait for Mat to make it back.

This is not a certain thing, of course, because it all depends on the recovery. It may not work out, but I do get the impression that the prognosis is pretty good. If McBriar is healthy, he comes back. I think it is that simple.
