Week 1 NFL Picks: Cowboys Unanimous Favorites Over Giants

The Cowboys will kick off the 2012 NFL season on Wednesday. That means it's time we kick off our time-honored BTB tradition of having the front-page writers embarrass themselves publicly by picking their winners for each regular season week, starting with Week 1. Each week, the BTB front page writers will publish their straight-up picks for each game.

Here at BTB, we're very objective about our lack of objectivity. Most of us pick the Cowboys to win every game, and it's no different this week: The Cowboys are our unanimous favorites against the Giants - after all, their owner still owes us $10 million, and it's time to start collecting. The other unanimous picks by the panel this week are the Bears, Saints, Texans, Lions and Ravens.

After the break, we look at all the picks for week one and try to figure out which one of the front-pagers could win our pick 'em contest this season.

I asked my fellow writers how they were planning to dethrone the reigning champion, and you'll find their answers below. Who's your pick to win this year's pick 'em contest?

Archie

"I may still be in my rookie season here on BTB, but I am coming hard for the BTB pick 'em championship. Expect the unexpected, snitches! All I know is that I will be bringing it every single week, so be prepared, BTB front page veterans!"

Tom

"Last year I discovered the secret of picking games after the first couple of weeks. I just sucked those first two weeks, and OCC built up a lead that proved insurmountable. But I finished second, because after those first weeks when I had sat and considered and weighed what I knew, I figured it didn't matter, so I just started going with a quick gut reaction and spending no more than a couple of minutes making my picks."

"This year, I'm going with that from the outset, so prepare to bow before my instinctual genius and pure, dumb luck."

KD

"OK, I don't have a good track record on these things. Picking Against The Spread is actually easier for me for some strange reason. Here, I go with my gut instinct and I have so much built in protection there, the signals don't always reach the surface in the same condition they started. Think of it like the kids game "telephone"... very little chance of the correct rendition being there at the end. This season, I plan to employ a brand new strategy. Wait until the last minute, then copy whomever is leading the race. Just kidding, sort of. If my picks happen to magically match the contest leader, it's just coincidence. Yup, pure chance."

"I'm so ashamed."

Coty

"My plan is to never pick something that I wouldn't want to happen. Therefore, I don't think you'll ever see me pick against Dallas or for a division rival. I don't know how things will turn out in the end, but at least I'll be able to stand behind my picks proudly."

rabble

"In 2010, I donned my lucky t-shirt and rode that tattered rag to pick-'em glory. In 2011, perhaps inspired by the prospect of a new head coach, or filled with hubris, I eschewed the lucky "t" and, as a result, fell from prediction grace. Determined to wear the crown once again, I have, after great labor, unearthed the lucky shirt. Thus armed, I fully expect to topple the usurper, OCC, from my rightful throne..."

Dave

"I will win the BTB Pick 'Em contest this year because even if I don't, I will use my editorial privileges to go back in time and change picks until I do win!"

Brandon

Brandon Worley shrouds himself in silence to the point where the only communication from the International Man Of Mystery consists of 16 hastily scribbled picks for the first week.

Below are our Week 1, 2012 picks. Agree, Disagree? Let us know about it in the comments section.
