I guess I am about to ruffle some feathers again. I previously posted a draft that I did, that is (IMO)better than our actual draft. It has caused fellow cowboys fans to bash me for "prematurely" grading my picks better. I get all that so, it's time to move on, time just "get along", time to beat the giants. But I have yet another extreme opinion that I'm sure people won't agree with. I am writing about it now (BEFORE the giants game) to put emphasis on just how true this is. This is an opinion that only a Cowboys fan can truly know....because the media won't ever step out on a limb and say this....read it after The JUMP!!!!
Jason Witten is the poster child for what Jason Garrett calls "progress stoppers". That previous statement is a microcosm of our problems. Ready to rolls some eyes: T.O. was dead on when he complained about passes going to Witten. Don't get this twisted, i don't want T.O. back. Never really did, once he was gone. From an "on the field" football standpoint, I believe T.O. can still play. But from a "dealing with the media and locker room" standpoint, T.O. would hurt the team. Even if he wasn't doing anything. (Which in actuality, has been the case with T.O. over the last few years). T.O.'s negative attention is there even when he does nothing. BUT T.O. WAS RIGHT!!! Witten emphasis hurts out chances to win.
Tony Romo's crosshairs are so locked onto Witten that it makes our offense easy to defend. In fact, I believe that NFL d-coordinators like the fact that he often throws to the turtle-slow Witten, and they gameplan to make him do it. I do think that this situation is more a Tony Romo issue than a Jason Witten issue. Romo is the one in control of this and T.O. was right to have an issue with Romo because of it. Did anyone notice how well Romo played in the 3rd preseason game (dress reheasal game) without Witten? That was the game that Dwayne Harris became the Dwayne Harris of East Carolina. Anyone notice how good Cole Beasley looks as the check down instead of a slow TE.
Am I saying that Witten is not a good player? No...But he is an average TE who gets a whole bunch of targets. This is also what Martellus Bennett was frustrated with. Bennett never truly got the opportunity to show what he could be as "the" TE. I am extremely concerned that we will see how good Bennett can be as "The TE" tonight. I don't think anyone wants to argue a comparison in Witten to Bennett, athletically. Because Witten has remained with us, and both Bennett and Anthony Fasano has left, doesn't that make Witten a "progress stopper"? How is it that Andre Gurode is forced out to allow a center to develop but Witten is still believed to be such a needed player? BTW, I still don't see that center that Gurode was supposedly stopping from progressing. From the eye test, we have had more capable players stuck behind Witten than was stuck behind Gurode.
Because of how Romo spreads the ball around without Witten, we become a more dangerous team. This means: if Witten doesn't play tonight, WE WILL BEAT THE GIANTS (and may do it EASILY). But unfortunately, now you get to be just as frustrated as I am, because now you know it too. Lastly, Witten will come back and we will go back to the predictable, easily defensed, team we were before...sorry.
