How quickly the season flies by; seems like it was a few weeks ago that I was checking my twitter feed non stop to find out how everyone was doing out in Oxnard or watching college videos on all the rookies or discussing who had the hottest seat or least amount of time left in Dallas (Garrett, Romo). I was nervous about the season opener and for good reasons. Rookie CB starting against the defending Super Bowl champs after missing some time in the offseason, concerns about the team performing at a high level on such a big stage, wondering how Garrett would manage the game. All the fear went away after the victory and it was replaced with confidence that my team had finally turned a corner. That was all a facade, though; we had some outstanding comebacks and there were times when the full potential of this group really showed (I've seen this movie before). But after a full 16 games it all feels the same. I personally don't feel anymore confident which is normal cause we surely ended the season the same way we did last year. A team headed for 8-8 with one last shot at the playoffs who falls flat on their faces.
There were some bright spots like Bruce Carter playing the way he did but at the same time I actually thought he would play just like that. I mean all we heard about was his physical abilities so his performance didn't surprise me the least bit. Dez Bryant had a break out year but that's exactly what he was drafted for. He did appear more focused than he had been previously but all he did this year was expected to happen. Witten continues too be the warrior he is, Ware battles injuries and Tony Romo makes bad decisions when the cookie (OLine) crumbles and then yells at the receivers. Speaking of OLine they were bad as usual, inconsistent might be a better word. Sometimes they looked decent despite all the injuries and changes and other times it didn't appear they'd be worth a damn if every linemen on the roster was out in front. Romo needs a better OLine <----- (beats dead horse once again) no secret there but he also has to make better decisions in the process. He's a veteran and 19 interceptions (?) makes my stomach turn. I'm not a Romo-Sexual, no secret there, but I've seen plenty of supporters admit they couldn't defend such poor play early in the season and of course to cap off the season.
The defense in my opinion gets a pass unlike last season. The key players that were lost was too much for any team to overcome. The main reason I felt bad for Rob Ryan getting fired because he's had a raw deal since coming here. Carter, Lee, Church, Ratliff, Scandrick (I think it made a difference) and Coleman. The defense was held together just well enough for us to still have a shot at the postseason but even if we had made it it would've been for morale cause we wouldn't have stood a chance. That's not just speaking of the defense against post season competition either, the offense was up and down. I still don't get how Garrett can't establish any kind of identity or get his best players in rhythm. Throwing to Dez when he got hot appeared to be the only game plan and I think that was mainly because of what was said about Dez needing to be the number one receiver. I think Garrett felt pressure from that. True or not he didn't create a recipe for season long success. We were good, then bad, then good and back to bad. Running game, OLine, Quarterback.... You name it and it wasn't consistent.
It's hard to think anything will change dramatically or even just enough to compete within the next couple of years. There's a lot going on in the NFC. The Redskins look to be competing for the top spot in our division for a while, the Seahawks have become very impressive over the years and I can't see the 49ers being out of the equation for a long time. It only gets tougher from here on out unless there are real changes. Changes such as Jerry understanding he needs a real coach, the offensive line actually being an offensive line (via draft or free agency) and at least bringing in legitimate talent for the back up quarterback position. I can't say much about the defense cause at least there's a serious change coming on that could work and utilize the talent better to create turnovers. As usual I'm looking forward to the draft and free agency and training camp and.....well basically I wanna be excited about success and taking the next step rather than being excited about what could get us where we wanna go or what drastic changes are needed to even think about the next step.
