I had to chuckle when I heard Bill Billick hammering Dez Bryant for his "behavior" on the side lines. Every time they turned the camera to an animated Dez Bryant it brought a big ole smile to this Cowboys fans face. Why? Because I was seeing deja vu. As I recall, back in, ohhh, '89 through 2000 or so, I remember seeing another Cowboys great doing exactly the same thing and I also remeber seeing the players including the QB (what's his name?) reacting the exact same way as Tony Romo. But, you know what? I also remember the winning. I remember the passion. I remember the anger when that team was losing. I remember this particular player walking up and down the sideline jaw-ing at his teammates, high five-ing, screaming for the "rock" as he called it back then And eventually, the QB got the message and just started throwing the rock to this guy. To shut him up? No, because he was a winner. When a ball came within a few feet of this legend he usually was the one with his mitts on the thing.
Billick should know better. Or maybe not. He never coached a team as great as that one. He's never been around a player as great as that one was. He got lucky and played in a SB against a team that was sorely inferior to his team and that's not saying his team was a great one. Far from it. Good but not great.... like that 90's Cowboys team was.
Great is winning three Superbowls in four years and winning them decisively. Great is having the all-time greatest running back behind the all-time decade winningest QB throwing to the hall of fame receiver who just happened to be the heart and soul of that all-time great team. The heart and soul. Sure he talked a lot but he backed it up with legendary play and he got his team to rise up and play to the level of a champion. Again and again and again.
So, that said. Dez, you keep on being you! Do whatever it takes to elevate your team to where it needs to be. To heck with what some hack commentator says about you or what a bunch of hack writers have to say about you. You go! Your QB needs to elevate his game. So, tell him so! Your defense needs to get it together, so tell them so! Your offense needs to know when to put their foot on the throat of a losing team. So, you tell them so!
You're the superstar on this team. Bar none. You are the Emmitt on this team. You are the Aikman on this team and, you know what?....you will be that receiver on this team that take this franchise where it is supposed to be. The Yankees not the Red Sox. The Bulls, not the Heat.
You wear number 88. Now.... go represent.
