Why the Dallas Cowboys Ain't Scared

I wrote this because I feel the need to counter the doom and gloom many of us seem to be feeling. Now this analysis isn’t for betting purposes, but for enjoyment only. Fans need to find hope that their team can win, even if they don’t expect them to win.

I don’t want to diminish the four game winning streak by the Broncos too much, because it is hard to win consistently in this league. They are undeniably a good team that’s playing well. But I do think it’s worth mentioning that they haven’t faced a winning team yet.

Let’s take a look at the Bronco’s opponents:
Baltimore Ravens: 2-2
New York Giants: 0-4
Oakland Raiders: 1-3
Philadelphia Eagles: 1-3

That’s a combined record of 4-12. Even you subtract the losses directly attributable to the Broncos, their opponents are still 4-8. However you spin it, their overall competition has been poor. I think in many ways, this team has not been tested. How would the Broncos perform against the 4-0 Chiefs, for example? I think they would not look quite so invincible.

Let’s take a look at the Cowboy’s opponents:
New York Giants: 0-4
Kansas City Chiefs: 4-0
St Louis Rams: 1-3
San Diego Chargers: 2-2

That’s a combined record of 7-9. That is not an impressive ratio, but in comparison to the Broncos competition, you see something that is much more representative of what the NFL has to offer.

The Cowboys have been tested. They've already faced a 4-0 quality team, the Chiefs, and played them toe-to-toe until the end. The Cowboys aren't complete, but they have enough talent to take on the best when everything comes together. We all probably have the last half of football from the Chargers game on our minds, but we may have forgotten that at one point we held an 11 point lead and Dez Bryant looked unstoppable. We had several defensive players either disappear or perform unusually poorly in that game. I don't think we have to project that performance into the future this early in the season.

While we shouldn’t ignore those last two quarters of football, we should keep in mind that that the Cowboys can and have played much better than that. I don’t know what quality of game the Cowboys are going to play, but home field has been nice to us so far this year, so I have every reason to expect the best from our team on Sunday.
