Cowboys Playing With Confidence For A Change

When a team gets thrashed the way the Cowboys did at New Orleans, it is time to either fold up the tents or come back determined to overcome the embarrassment. For Jason Garrett's team, packing up was not an option.

"Confidence is very sexy, don't you think?"

That question was asked by oscar winning actor Jack Palance in an aftershave commercial that ran back when the Cowboys were making Super Bowl wins a habit in the early 1990's, but it sum up what some Cowboys fans are starting to think after the club rebounded from the old-fashioned butt-whoopin' the team received at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. While many wrote the 'Boys off after the Saints handed them a 49-17 loss, Jason Garrett and his team have refused to believe that their season is over. The last two games have shown how confident the squad remains; they keep bringing the fight to their opponents; the Cowboys are rising to the challenge.

"The best teams and the best players do that. When you look around the league, there are a lot of teams that have bad losses. Sometimes they're close bad losses, and sometimes they're blowout bad losses. The teams that are able to put that one aside and come back and go win the next game and put their best foot forward, those are the ones that play at the end of the year." - Jason Garrett

The coach also called out the "revisionist history" that states that the dynasty teams never faced similar circumstances while on their way to three championships in four seasons. Garrett, unlike many, still remembers the tough losses that the Johnson era teams had to overcome.

Thanks to the never-say-die attitude the Cowboys have developed, coupled with a belief in themselves and each other, Dallas finds itself in control of its own destiny. The future will be whatever the players choose to make it. As Garrett likes to remind the team, "It's the nature of the league. It's competitive. You have to understand that it's hard and you got to keep going."

Jason Hatcher, who has emerged as one of the leaders on the squad understands exactly what his coach is saying. To his mind, Garrett's message has taken hold with his coworkers.

"The guys on this team, we know how we're built. I know we're a resilient team, we're going to keep grinding." - Jason Hatcher

Teammate Jason Witten sees things the same way.

"There's a confidence within, this is a close nit group. It's a resilient group." - Jason Witten

Will it be enough to get the Cowboys back to the level that fans expect? Probably not this year, but what it can be is another step in the right direction for a franchise that is trying to fight its way back to relevence in the National Football League. It is another part of the process.
