There was a story recently here on BTB that read - "the Cowboys are becoming a resilient, determined squad". I thought long and hard about that. Really? Are they resilient. Determined? Not to call out one of BTB's better writers but what games are you watching this season? If I may ask? Yes, the Cowboys have won games, but look at the opponents they have won against. A pretty middling bunch. Now look at the winning teams they have played - the real winning teams, not the ones with merely a "winning" record. The Saints, Bronco's, etc. Against those types of teams we have laid the proverbial egg (or thrown that danged signature INT - ouch). Romo has looked his normal pedestrian record setting self (Danny White anyone??). The defense is almost comical, except for the line and Jason Hatcher (monster).
I'm sorry, I almost got sucked into grabbing that big frosty mug of bright blue kool-aid after reading the story I mentioned above and start chugging away. Ohhh, am I thirsty for it, too! But here's the reality - Dallas hasn't proven anything so far this season. They've BARELY beaten the teams they should beat and lost to the one's they can't keep up with yet.
What does this mean to me? It means I don't trust this team as far as I can throw Travis Frederick. I don't think I could throw him very far, either.
Case in point - the Raiders. The Raiders, folks! Dallas comes out stinks the place up, lets Oakland build a sizeable lead while running around with their collective pants down on National T.V. and then either the Raiders suddenly remembered they were going against the script and started playing to their level OR the Raiders got tired OR the Raiders started thinking about the turkey waiting for them at home. Dallas simply did what they do best, made some plays against a stinker of a team. Resilient? Determined? Uhhh, maybe not.
I will not take the bait until they dangle something like organic wild caught salmon in front of me. And that organic salmon comes in the name of a win in the playoffs. Against an actual NFL calibre team. Not the Raiders, not the Giants. The Eagles? puhlease.... the Eagles are wrapped up in the same euphoria Dallas is - it's called, the NFC East sucks eggs this year. At least Dallas holds a tie breaker but, honestly, if this division comes down to a shootout against the Eagles to win the division then Dallas has a whole lot more problems than even I think they do.
Once again, sorry for the bummer post. But I need to keep reality firmly in my crosshairs because one more win by Dallas this weekend and even I will start getting weak at the sight of that scrumptious kool-aid that I so, so very much am thirsting for. But, NO!, not until they PROVE they belong with the big boys of the NFL. Where they belong.
5 Superbowl Rings teaches you what to look for. I haven't seen it yet this year. My eyes are peeled, though.
