2013 NFL Draft: The Big Board 1.0

Chris Trotman

With the Dallas Cowboys and their needs in mind, here is a closer look at the 50 best prospects in the 2013 NFL Draft.

It took a very long time before I could actually sit down and get a feel for this year's draft class. This draft is going to be an interesting one because it lacks talent towards the top, but there is going to be depth through the second and third round. The Dallas Cowboys sit at an interesting spot with the 18th overall pick because they typically set up their board with around 20 first-round grades.

This really isn't a strong draft, but it still offers the Cowboys a chance to fill in some holes and add young talent. When I first started putting together my board back in 2011, my overall goal was to just rank the best players available. Since then, the board has changed and has become primarily a board assembled with the Dallas Cowboys in mind. Considering the Cowboys have certain needs, some positions come into a higher priority than others.

Tony Romo is our starting quarterback and he's a good one. With Romo under contract, the Cowboys don't have to reach for a quarterback. They do need to add a developmental prospect for the long-term, but there truly isn't a need to pick one before the third round. Cornerback isn't a pressing need because the team has spent a lot of resources upgrading that position last year.

The true areas of need included offensive line, defensive line, safety, wide receiver and linebacker. Running back is also a need for the Cowboys, but outside of one running back this class didn't offer a lot of options for me to include in the top 50. This class is rich in running back talent after the second round, and because of that value you can afford to wait on that position and use a selection later in the draft

Depending on the position, certain needs drove players up or down the board. This board attempts to combine to the needs of the Cowboys, but at the same time it also tries to keep talented players who don't necessarily fit a need in the loop.
