How did the Cowboys end up in the NFC East?

If you look at a map of the United States, Dallas is definitely south and kinda west, yet it is not even remotely east by any stretch. Well, i did some research.

The Cowboys started out in the NFL West in 1960 as an expansion franchise, yet were inexplicably switched to the NFL East for their 2nd season to make room for the expansion Minnesota Vikings, despite the presence of the Baltimore Colts and Detroit Lions in the NFL West.
