The other side of the FS vs SS coin

Let me preface this article by stating that this idea was first mentioned by another blogger, either here or on a different blog site, and I wish I could remember who it was in order to give them credit for what I believe is an interesting thought. So if you're reading this, make yourself known.

It has been said many times over that the Cowboys are in the market for a rangy FS type, henceforth we have focused our efforts tirelessly dissecting any and every safety that fits that mold. In free agency and the draft it is the FS that we have come to believe the Cowboys are targeting because Barry Church was extended this past season. To that point many of us, myself included, complain that the front office are putting too much faith in Church considering his limited experience. Couple his inexperience with the fact that he's coming off a bad knee injury when he wasn't exactly a burner to begin with and the choice to trust him so much at the strong safety spot seems very odd. What if we are all wrong?

Maybe the front office does like him, and Kiffin sees him fitting in his scheme. That doesn't mean he will be the starting SS, maybe he'll be a key back up, LB SS type hybrid in nickle and dime packages. Maybe they are as sold on Matt Johnson as they have said and maybe they feel he can handle the FS role (which would also be questionable considering lack of experience and injury history)? I don't know, but it would be interesting. Frankly speaking the SS prospects in this draft appear to be an area of greater strength than the FS prospects, so it wouldn't be far fetched to see the team go after a Matt Elam or John Cyprien type. I know many say Cyprien is interchangeable which adds even more value. Imagine going into camp having Church and Johnson fight for a spot and whoever wins we can slide Cyprien into the opposite safety spot.

Whether or not this theory holds true I just thought it was a very intriguing comment by that poster and I thought I'd post it here to see what everyone else thinks. Hopefully it gives us another angle to look at things as it seems most of the talk is the same thing just recycled and reused in different forms. Not a knock, because I love the writing here, it is very insightful and informative, but just trying to shake things up. Actually I guess at the end of it all this may too be the same thing just recycled and reused....11 more days, can't wait!
