I know some fans coveted this guy, and I understand the frustration, but primarily I'm reacting to this meme that it was a choice between Floyd and trading down. I've seen this from fans and I've seen it perpetuated by the writers at ESPN.
The most important thing to consider is that Sharrif was the 3rd defensive tackle taken and he was taken 6 picks later than the Cowboys original pick. Any connection between Floyd and Dallas is based upon
A: an overestimation of his scoutable value, as evidenced by his pick at 24
B: A desire by the media to create salacious story lines for a sport that is only played a couple times a week.
If you want to think of it as a choice, than consider the Jets and Panthers, the two teams that picked DT's ahead of Floyd. It is a sensible discussion to compare him to Sheldon Richardson and Star Lotulelei. I can imagine the Jets fans have every right to compare Sheldon Richardson to Floyd or Star and they probably already are. It's crystal clear that the Jets and Panthers both considered two folks ahead of Floyd. It's really not clear what the Cowboys thought of him.
Now imagine if you will, Justin Pugh (the OT taken one pick after the 'Boys original pick) turns out to be a pro-bowl OT. Considering the obvious needs of Dallas on the offensive line, and the fan's hatred of Doug Free and Pugh's team (the Giants). Wouldn't a comparison to another offensive lineman taken the very next pick make more sense? Sure many folks thought that Pugh was a reach there, but most people also admitted that the last half of the first round was more or less a wash with the 2nd round and not coincidentally, that's where Floyd was picked too.
Mark my words, post draft performance and 20/20 hindsight are going to be the true indicators of fan grumpiness on this matter. If Pugh or anyone between 18-46 winds up being someone awesome there will be a contingent of fans who will moan and complain and point to it as a failure of Jerry's draft process. And if Floyd turns out to be a bust, almost no one will think back to consider this moment when a large contingent of the fan base was complaining.
Me? I'm looking forward to that 3rd round pick, that I expect to be a one-cut runner to complement Murray :D
