The Legacy of Jerry Jones as GM, Draft Trader, Football Man

There have been lots of articles about the Cowboys trading pick 18 and they appear to be divided into 3 camps:

1. Jerry Jones is too dumb to save himself. He passed on the highly rated DT and safety, got fleeced by the 49ers and ultimately picked a lowly rated nerd for center.

2. Jerry Jones is just part of a collaborative organization. The team did the best with what was available, especially if you agree with their "big board" and that Harvard trade chart.

3. Rampant skepticism and hope. We hope camp #2 is right but, oh boy, history hasn't been on our side, has it?

Do you see 1 success story in the trade down history of the Jerry Jones era? These were the picks:

Down

1995 28 = 41 + 63 Sherman Williams + Kendall Watkins

1996 30 = 37 + 67 Kavika Pittman + Clay Shiver

2001 37 = 52 + 81 Quincy Carter

2002 6 = 8 + 75 Roy Williams + Derek Ross

2004 22 = 43 + 20 Julius Jones + Marcus Spears

2007 22 = 36 + 22 Felix Jones

2009 51 = 75 + 110 Robert Brewster + Victor Butler

2013 18 = 31 + 74 Travis Frederick + Terrance Williams

In fact, has trading up been any better?

Up

1994 28 + 62 = 23 Shante Carver

1997 25 + 70 = 22 David LaFleur

2000 7 + 19 = Joey Galloway

2007 36 + 87 = 26 Anthony Spencer

2009 20 + 82 = Roy Williams WR

2012 14 + 45 = 6 Mo Claiborne

Uh, not really. Hence the skepticism and need for hope after 17 years of drafts.

-----

FYI, I tossed out the minor trades (like Dez). Some cases the trades where traded, e.g., Quincy Carter (still my vote for the biggest draft mistake in Cowboy history). Overall, I think looking back you have to ask 2 questions:

1. Was the trade defensible in the context of what could reasonable be known at the time, and

2. Were the Cowboys right ...

How would you grade the years?

1994 F

1995 F

1996 F

1997 F

2000 F

2001 F -

2002 F

2004 D

2007 C (combined)

2009 F

2012 C (at current rate)

2013 ?

Let's hope the new collective brain trust only shares "the star" and JJ's name with the past. We're trending up, right?
