First of all, what up fellow 'Boys fans! After watching Joey's "How to defend the Zone Read" video, I was inspired to find new ideas about that particular subject myself....but then I got sidetracked. But suddenly today, I was inspired thinking of a play I used to run on Madden when I had to deal with athlethic QBs: QB Spy. Please excuse the Paint Picture, but it should help get my point across. I've tried to color the different responsibilities so people realize what my idea is. This is drawn up against a pistol formation including a FB, but I think it can be run against any 2+ backfield, such as a RB + FB, RB + H-back, etc. The key to this is our linebackers, and their particular skill sets. This can work against a QB keep vs handoff, or QB handoff vs throw, as was discussed in Joey's "Zone Read Variation" video.
If its a run, the Mike(MLB)'s responsibilities are marked in GRAY. He spys on the QB and follows him throughout the play. The Will(Weakside LB)'s responsibilites are like any other run play, keep contain and force it back inside.
If It's a pass is where this gets interesting. Because the Mike has to keep his eyes on the QB to read run vs pass, he will have to stay in his place, delaying him from getting upfield as he would on a regular basis, correct? My solution is to have the Will cover the deep middle in place of the Mike, and having the Mike cover the short zone the Will just vacated. The Mike's responsibility is marked in RED, and the Will's responsibility is marked in BLUE.
So, any thoughts? Can this be a viable defense against the zone read? This is something I literally just came up with, so I'm sure there's holes that others will be able to easily see. Feel free to poke holes in my idea, or if you have an improvement, describe it and I'll be happy to draw from it for future improvements on this initial fanpost. Thanks for taking the time to read this, and Go 'Boys!!!
